Nazi Buddha from Space
Klingt wie aus ‘nem Indiana Jones-Film, ist aber echt: Wissenschaftler haben nachgewiesen, das eine Buddha-Statue aus der Mongolei aus dem 11. Jahrhundert aus einem Meteoriten geschnitzt wurde. Man nimmt an, dass es noch weitere religiöse Figuren from Space gibt (unter anderem der Schwarze Stein von Kaaba in Mekka), diese Buddha-Statue, die 1939 von den Nazis nach Deutschland gebracht wurde, ist allerdings die erste, deren Abstammung from Space nachgewiesen wurde. Und als nächstes öffnet sich ein Tor in eine andere Dimension und Hellboy kommt da raus.
One religious statue has a stronger connection than most to the heavens. An 11th-century carving from Mongolia of the Buddhist god Vaiśravana was fashioned from a meteorite fragment, a chemical analysis shows. Its extraterrestrial origins make it unique in both religious art and meteorite science. The iron-rich statue, 24 centimetres tall, has had a colourful past. It was apparently brought to Germany in 1939 by a Nazi-backed archaeological expedition to search for the roots of Aryanism.
A swastika on the armoured Buddha’s breastplate may have been a motivating factor in bringing the statue to Germany. The swastika is a common symbol in eastern culture and decorates many Hindu and Buddhist statues – although the version on the statue is a mirror image of the form favoured by the Nazis.

Eine Historikerin aus Harvard hat ein (wohl authentisches) Stück Papyrus identifiziert, auf dem geschrieben steht, dass Jesus eine Frau hatte. Die Kirche wird dieses lächerliche Detail natürlich ignorieren, aber kann sich der denkfähige Teil der Menschheit jetzt mal bitte darauf einigen: Jesus hatte ‘ne Frau, war nichts weiter als ein ziemlich weltlicher Revolutionsführer, Maria war keine Jungfrau und es gibt keinen Gott.
A historian of early Christianity at Harvard Divinity School has identified a scrap of papyrus that she says was written in Coptic in the fourth century and contains a phrase never seen in any piece of Scripture: “Jesus said to them, ‘My wife …’ ”
The faded papyrus fragment is smaller than a business card, with eight lines on one side, in black ink legible under a magnifying glass. Just below the line about Jesus having a wife, the papyrus includes a second provocative clause that purportedly says, “she will be able to be my disciple.”
The finding was made public in Rome on Tuesday at the International Congress of Coptic Studies by Karen L. King, a historian who has published several books about new Gospel discoveries and is the first woman to hold the nation’s oldest endowed chair, the Hollis professor of divinity.

Rassismus auf Gedenkfeier gegen Rassismus: Rostock-Lichtenhagen 2012
Bei diesem Video sind mir schon wieder zwei Äderchen im Auge geplatzt. Während unser Bundesgauck auf einem „Festakt“ (allein das Wort schon!) anlässlich des 20. Jahrestages des Pogroms in Rostock-Lichtenhagen die Gewalt gegen Ausländer schönredet, werden Menschen mit offizieller Einladung nicht eingelassen, offensichtlich weil sie schwarz sind. Ihre Plätze blieben während der Veranstaltung frei.
Der Text auf Kombinat Fortschritt liest sich leider unnötig sperrig, aber da muss man eben durch und Wegschauen ist bei diesem Thema keine Option:
Am Rande dieser offiziellen Veranstaltung mit dem neu ernannten Ehrenbürger scheint sich jedoch die Kontinuität der Fratze des Rostocker Erinnerungsdiskurses gezeigt zu haben. Zwei Mitglieder des deutsch-afrikanischen Freundeskreises Daraja e. V., unter ihnen das Vorstandsmitglied Marouf Ali Yarou Issah, hatten sich bereits vor Wochen für die Gedenkveranstaltung mit Joachim Gauck angemeldet – zunächst auch mit Erfolg. Über eine halbe Stunde vor Veranstaltungsbeginn fanden sie sich mit ihrer Einladung auf dem Gelände ein. Doch bereits am Einlass wurde der Zutritt zum Festakt hinausgezögert. Zunächst kein ungewöhnliches Unterfangen bedenkt man die hohen Sicherheitsvorkehrungen, die für die Anreise des Bundespräsidenten getroffen werden. Doch nachdem die Sicherheitsbeamten mit den Veranstaltern Rücksprache hielten, wurde den geladenen Gästen plötzlich mitgeteilt, dass sie auf der Veranstaltung nicht erwünscht seien, genauere Begründungen für dieses Vorgehen blieben jedoch aus. Auch auf explizit gestellte Nachfragen erhielten die ausgeladenen Gäste keine Auskunft, nur eine scheinheilige Begründung, dass sie auf dem Gelände wohl zu spät eingetroffen seien. Eine Farce, denn auch nach der Abweisung konnten offenbar weitere Geladene die Schleuse passieren.

Guns from Bonnie and Clyde for Sale
Vor einem halben Jahr hat man ein paar Gewehre versteigert, die man ein Jahr vor dem Überfall auf Bonnie und Clyde bei einer Durchsuchung sichergestellt hatte. Die Dinger gingen für rund 100.000 Dollar pro Schießeisen an Sammler. Jetzt werden zwei Pistolen versteigert und die hier hat man direkt nach dem berühmten Hinterhalt auf einer Landstraße in Louisiana Bonnie & Clydes Leichen abgenommen. Clydes Knarre war im Halfter, Bonnie trug ihren Colt am Oberschenkel.
Two Colt handguns that Clyde Barrow and Bonnie Parker were carrying when they were ambushed and killed in a hail of bullets on May 23, 1934, are coming up for auction in September. […] Bonnie’s Colt .38 is downright salacious. She kept it taped to her inner thigh which is where Hamer found it after she was killed.
A notarized letter from former Special Texas Ranger Frank Hamer, Jr., dated December 10, 1979, identifies this gun and states, “On the morning of May 23, 1934, when my father and the officers with him in Louisiana killed Clyde Barrow and Bonnie Parker. My father removed this gun from the inside thigh of Bonnie Parker where she had it taped with white, medical, adhesive tape. My father said that one reason she had the gun taped to the inside of her leg was that, in those days, no gentlemen officer would search a woman where she had it taped…Sometime later, my father gave this gun to Buster Davis who had been a Texas Ranger and was, at the time, an FBI Agent.” Included with this gun and mentioned in this letter is a framed handwritten note from Frank Hamer, written on the back of an old Texas Ranger Expense Account form, reads “Aug/1934 Davis hold onto this. Bonnie was ‘squatting’ on it. Frank.”
Frankenstein Mummies
Derzeit geht ‘ne Meldung über schottische Moorleichen rum, deren Körperteile von sechs verschiedenen Leuten kommen. Die Mumien wurden vor zehn Jahren entdeckt, und nun, als man feststellte, dass der Kieferknochen eines Skeletts nicht zum Schädel passte, hat man die Überreste genetisch analysiert. Die Leichen wurden 600 Jahre nach ihrem Tod erneut bestattet, ob sie schon vorher aus verschiedenen Menschen zusammengesetzt waren, kann man nicht sagen.
Ich schätze mal, bei der Urbarmachung dieser schottischen Moore ist bei der Umsetzung der Toten ganz einfach der Karren mit den Leichen umgefallen und man hat die Knochen als „Respektsbekundung“ neu zusammengesetzt, erscheint mir die einfachste und logischste Erklärung. Vielleicht haben die Schotten ihre Toten aber auch als Ritual auseinandergeschnitten und Leichenmashups gemacht, was weiß ich.
In a “eureka” moment worthy of Dr. Frankenstein, scientists have discovered that two 3,000-year-old Scottish “bog bodies” are actually made from the remains of six people. According to new isotopic dating and DNA experiments, the mummies—a male and a female—were assembled from various body parts, although the purpose of the gruesome composites is likely lost to history.
The mummies were discovered more than a decade ago below the remnants of 11th-century houses at Cladh Hallan, a prehistoric village on the island of South Uist (map), off the coast of Scotland. The bodies had been buried in the fetal position 300 to 600 years after death. (See bog body pictures.)
Based on the condition and structures of the skeletons, scientists had previously determined that the bodies had been placed in a peat bog just long enough to preserve them and then removed. The skeletons were then reburied hundreds of years later.

Lego Turing Machine
Jeroen van den Bos und Davy Landman haben anlässlich des hundertsten Geburtstags von Alan Turing am 23. Juni eine Turing Maschine aus Lego gebaut. Eine Turing Maschine ist eigentlich ein mathematisches Konstrukt, das Algorithmen abbildet, aber was in Mathe geht, geht auch in Lego. Außerdem mag ich es sehr, dass das Teil hier aussieht, wie eine Mischung aus Kettensäge und Spaceship.
To honor Alan Turing, we built a simple LEGO Turing Machine, to show everyone how simple a computer actually is. Primary goals were to make every operation as visible as possible and to make it using just a single LEGO MINDSTORMS NXT set.
Our LEGO Turing machine uses a tape based on a classic interpretation of computer memory: switches. Additionally, it uses a light sensor to determine the value of a switch: if the switch is on, the sensor will see the black colour of the switch’s surface. But if it is turned off, the sensor will see the white colour of the LEGO beam, making it possible to distinguish between the states. Finally, a rotating beam mounted above the tape can flip the switch in both directions.

“The question was not, ‘Should you eat human flesh?’ but, ‘What sort of flesh should you eat?’ ” says Sugg. The answer, at first, was Egyptian mummy, which was crumbled into tinctures to staunch internal bleeding. But other parts of the body soon followed. Skull was one common ingredient, taken in powdered form to cure head ailments. Thomas Willis, a 17th-century pioneer of brain science, brewed a drink for apoplexy, or bleeding, that mingled powdered human skull and chocolate. And King Charles II of England sipped “The King’s Drops,” his personal tincture, containing human skull in alcohol. Even the toupee of moss that grew over a buried skull, called Usnea, became a prized additive, its powder believed to cure nosebleeds and possibly epilepsy. Human fat was used to treat the outside of the body. German doctors, for instance, prescribed bandages soaked in it for wounds, and rubbing fat into the skin was considered a remedy for gout.
Blood was procured as fresh as possible, while it was still thought to contain the vitality of the body. This requirement made it challenging to acquire. The 16th century German-Swiss physician Paracelsus believed blood was good for drinking, and one of his followers even suggested taking blood from a living body. While that doesn’t seem to have been common practice, the poor, who couldn’t always afford the processed compounds sold in apothecaries, could gain the benefits of cannibal medicine by standing by at executions, paying a small amount for a cup of the still-warm blood of the condemned. “The executioner was considered a big healer in Germanic countries,” says Sugg. “He was a social leper with almost magical powers.” For those who preferred their blood cooked, a 1679 recipe from a Franciscan apothecary describes how to make it into marmalade.

Years ahead of its time, the 1972 Xerox Alto featured Ethernet networking, a full page display, a mouse, laser printing, e-mail, and a windows-based user interface. Although it’s high price limited sales, the Alto was a groundbreaking invention and the inspiration for the Apple Macintosh and Microsoft Windows operating systems.
