At one point, hours into the conversation, Kasdan asks, “Do you have a name for this person?”
Lucas: I do.
Spielberg: I hate this, but go ahead.
Lucas: Indiana Smith.The transcript does not note the sound of crickets, but nor is there any burst of enthusiasm.
Lucas: It has to be unique. It’s a character. Very Americana. Square. He was born in Indiana.
Kasdan: What does she call him, Indy?
Lucas: That’s what I was thinking. Or Jones.

Das hier ist der Flyer für eine bald stattfindende Ausstellung in der Gallery 1988, in der Künstler auf Filmpostern rummalen. Michael Jackson als Indiana Jones ist nun wirklich eine Mischung, auf die ich in hundert Jahren nicht gekommen wäre. Sobald Bilder der Ausstellung online sind, poste ich das hier, selbstverständlich.
Eric Tan’s Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom Poster
We first discovered Eric Tan through a cool UFA German inspired X-Men cinema poster he created for a Stan Lee art show event. We were lucky enough to score a print of this, and it sits framed on the wall next to my computer. Tan has done some incredible design work for Pixar which we’ve spotlighted in the past. Tan is doing a series of Indiana Jones movie posters for Acme Archives (check out his kick ass Raiders poster). The second poster in the series, Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, is now available for $150.00 unframed.
If Only Indiana Jones 4 Had Been As Thrilling As Its Concept Art
If only Indiana Jones and the Kingdom Of The Crystal Skull had been as dynamic as the movie’s concept art. A gorgeous new book from Lucas Books and Ballantine, The Complete Making Of Indiana Jones, is chock full of art and production photos for Skull that make me feel a bit wistful for the finished product. Catacombs lit by glowing alien devices, shimmering skeletons and the obligatory exploding heads, all burst with so much promise that was never quite realized.

Ich hatte mir ja ganz, ganz, ganz, ganz fest vorgenommen, die ganzen doch eher, gelinde gesagt, negativen Reviews zu widerlegen und die Schreiber als nostalgisch verklärende Anhänger einer Bildwelt darzustellen, die jene alten Helden der Kindheit nicht als das erkannten, was sie schon damals in den Achtzigern waren: mit Tricks und Effekten aufgepumpter, bunt und groß, aber eben auch meisterlich erzählter Trash. Ich wollte wirklich schreiben, dass mich der großzügige Einsatz von CGI nicht weiter stört und auch, dass Aliens und Indy doch eigentlich ganz gut zusammen gehen, dass das Drehbuch zwar schlimm ist, die Performance von Ford und die Regie von Spielberg das alles aber wieder rausreißen…
Allein: es wäre gelogen.
„Indiana Jones und das Reich des Kristallschädels“ wirkt nicht als Teil der Reihe, weil er wie eine Satire auf sich selbst wirkt. Und das ist das allerschlimmste an diesem Film. Es sind nicht die CGI-Ameisen oder Mutts Tarzaneinlage, auch nicht der Kühlschrank und die Atombombe und all das hat mich auch im Einzelnen gar nicht weiter gestört… es ist die pure Aneinanderreihung dieser Szenen, die untereinander, wie Telepolis ganz richtig bemängelt, absolut austauschbar sind. Es ist völlig wurscht, ob Indy nun zuerst vor Kommunisten flüchtet und dann in einem Ameisenhaufen landet, all diese Szenen tragen genau nichts zur Story bei. Sie sind lediglich Beiwerk.
Das gab es bei den Vorgängern auch, zuhauf sogar (Affenhirn, anyone?), dennoch wirkt die krasse Übersteigerung eben wie Satire und nicht wie ein Film, der sein eigenes Genre trotz seiner Zugehörigkeit zum Pulp ernst nimmt. Denn eines tut Pulp ganz sicher: er nimmt seine Figuren und seine Geschichte ernst. So ernst, dass er eben Pulp wird. Indiana Jones 4 tut genau das nicht.
Es ist ein kicherndes Machwerk, das auf die Vorgänger zeigt und sagt: „Schau mal, was wir früher für einen Blödsinn gedreht haben. Das machen wir jetzt in noch größer.“ Genau diese Arroganz gegenüber den Fans und dem früheren Werk sieht man dem Film leider an. Und daran ändern, wie gesagt, weder die gute Darstellung von Harrison Ford, noch die handwerklich gute Regie von Steven Spielberg etwas. Wäre man gemein, könnte man sagen, dass Indiana Jones 4 mit dieser Einstellung auf einer Linie mit den Machwerken von Roland Emmerich liegt. Aber dann wäre man wirklich ein böser Mensch (weil dessen Filme zwar die gleiche satirische Übertreibung bieten, darüber hinaus aber noch blödere Drehbücher und erst Recht keinen Steven Spielberg vorweisen können).
Und auf diese schonmal prinzipiell blöde Grundhaltung kippen die Macher dann noch einen Riesenhaufen CGI-Affen und Humor für Leute mit AD-Syndrom. Karen Allen sitzt mit einem Lenkrad in den Händen im Wasser und muss die Augen aufreissen und debil vor sich hingrinsen. Dieser Indiana Jones entwürdigt seine Figuren und das hat weder mit CGI noch mit Aliens zu tun, sondern mit George Lucas’ fehlendem Feingefühl für seine ikonenhaften Charaktere. Ein Indy, der einem UFO beim Abheben zuschaut, ist die konsequente Weiterführung von Yoda, dem lichtschwertbehafteten Ninja-Turtle aus Episode 2. Solche Dinge sind das Zuendedenken dieser Figuren in Lucas’ Gedankenwelt mit modernen Mitteln, und genau die sollte ihm irgendjemand wieder wegnehmen. Vielleicht kriegt er ja dann wieder mal einen ikonographischen Film hin. Und nicht lediglich eine Satire darauf.
Wenn die Augen der Kristallschädel wenigstens geleuchtet hätten… Seufz.

Very few movie characters in history have become as iconic and recognizable as Henry Walton Jones, Jr., Ph.D. You know him as Indiana Jones, or more simply: Indy. In 1981, with the help of writers George Lucas, Philip Kaufman and Lawrence Kasdan, director Steven Spielberg brought this character to life for the first time in Raiders of the Lost Ark. Though actor Harrison Ford was Spielberg’s first choice for the role, it was Tom Selleck who was originally offered the part based on the will of George Lucas. But when Selleck was lost to take his role on the show “Magnum, P.I.”, Spielberg got his man and the world got one of it’s favorite heroes, Harrison Ford as Indiana Jones.

Music, a mode of creative expression consisting of sound and silence expressed through time, was given a 6.8 out of 10 rating in an review published Monday on Pitchfork Media, a well-known music-criticism website. According to the review, authored by Pitchfork editor in chief Ryan Schreiber, the popular medium that predates the written word shows promise but nonetheless “leaves the listener wanting more.” (via)

South Park wins Emmy for World of Warcraft episode
Last night the South Park episode “Make Love, Not Warcraft” won the Emmy for Outstanding Animated Program (less than one hour).
Indiana Jones and… the Kingdom of the Crystal Skulls? Actor Shia LaBeouf announced the title of the new Indiana Jones movie at the MTV Video Music Awards. But what was George Lucas’ inspiration? Where did these Crystal Skulls come from? These ancient objects have been referenced in many places, including an episode of StarGate SG-1, imaginatively titled “Crystal Skull”. There is also a Festival and a not-for-profit Foundation dedicated to researching these artifacts.

Joshua Davis: Infinitely Interesting
Joshua Davis is a design troublemaker. “A lot of printers ask me how I created my work,” he says mischievously. “Because technically, it’s not actually possible.”
Davis creates electronically generated graphic compositions of almost unimaginable complexity and individuality. Equally at home with print and electronic media, he builds his own Flash-based programs to combine and recombine colors borrowed from nature with forms that include organic shapes, text elements, and other symbols.

Forevertron: World’s Largest Scrap Metal Sculpture by Dr. Evermor
From a distance, Dr. Evermor’s “park” in Wisconsin looks like a junk yardfull of twisted metals and rusted machines, but it houses one of the coolest sculptures ever: Forevertron. Standing at 120 feet wide, 60 feet deep, 50-foot tall, and weighing 320 ton, this behemoth of an artwork is billed as the world’s largest scrap metal sculpture.

From a certain perspective, Ed Rosenthal may have caught a break when Judge Breyer sentenced him to just one day in prison plus time served when he was convicted for growing hundreds of marijuana plants in Oakland, California. But it would be difficult to argue that his trial was anything short of Kafkaesque. Rosenthal had been deputized by the City of Oakland to grow medical marijuana. But after being busted by the Feds, he was not even allowed to mention his relationship to the lawful government of Oakland nor was he allowed to present witnesses who could talk about it.
