Science: Stoners are more intelligent than Non-Stoners
Eine britische Langzeitstudie hat ergeben, dass Kids mit höheren IQs als Erwachsene eher zu (noch) illegalen Drogen neigen, als normalschlaue. Erstaunt mich jetzt nicht wirklich, aktivere Hirne tendieren meiner Logik nach auch eher zu Experimenten und Bewusstseinserweiterung.
A new British study finds children with high IQs are more likely to use drugs as adults than people who score low on IQ tests as children. The data come from the 1970 British Cohort Study, which has been following thousands of people over decades. The kids’ IQs were tested at the ages of 5, 10 and 16. The study also asked about drug use and looked at education and other socioeconomic factors. Then when participants turned 30, they were asked whether they had used drugs such as marijuana, cocaine and heroin in the past year.
Researchers discovered men with high childhood IQs were up to two times more likely to use illegal drugs than their lower-scoring counterparts. Girls with high IQs were up to three times more likely to use drugs as adults. A high IQ is defined as a score between 107 and 158. An average IQ is 100. The study appears in the Journal of Epidemiology and Community Health.

Schöne Studie von AptiQuant, nach eigenen Angaben sowas wie „a world leader in the field of online psychometric testing“. Die haben jetzt eine Studie über die Korrelation von Intelligenzquotient und dem verwendetetn Browser herausgegeben und, um’s mal wohlwollend zu formulieren, Internet Explorer-User kommen dabei nicht so wirklich gut weg.
Aus der Studie:
Figure 2: Browser percentage usage by percentile.From the graph in Figure 2, one can see that in the 0 percentile group (the group with the lowest IQ score) about 34% of the subjects use IE version 7.0 and this usage comes down to less than 4% in subjects with a 99 percentile (the group with the highest IQ score). Similarly IE version 6.0 comes down from about 12% to 0% as we move from left to right on the IQ scale. In a sharp contrast Opera, IE with Chrome Frame and Camino go from 0% to 10%, 6% and 3% respectively, implying that individuals with a higher IQ score use them.
Conclusion
The study showed a substantial relationship between an individual’s cognitive ability and their choice of web browser. From the test results, it is a clear indication that individuals on the lower side of the IQ scale tend to resist a change/upgrade of their browsers. This hypothesis can be extended to any software in general, however more research is needed for that, which is a potential future work as an extension to this report.

Octopus Tentacle-Brains
So wie es aussieht, denken Octopusse nicht nur mit ihrem relativ großen Gehirn, sondern auch mit Neuronen in ihren Tentakeln. Tentacles are actually Brains! Als ob die Viecher nicht sowieso schon freaky genug wären, jetzt haben sie auch noch Denkapparate in den Armen. Whoa!
Octopuses have large nervous systems, centered around relatively large brains. But more than half of their 500 million neurons are found in the arms themselves, Godfrey-Smith said. This raises the question of whether the arms have something like minds of their own. Though the question is controversial, there is some observational evidence indicating that it could be so, he said. When an octopus is in an unfamiliar tank with food in the middle, some arms seem to crowd into the corner seeking safety while others seem to pull the animal toward the food, Godfrey-Smith explained, as if the creature is literally of two minds about the situation.
There may be other explanations for the observations. But whatever the answer, it seems likely that octopus intelligence is quite different from that of humans and, as researchers ponder the broader meaning of intelligence, may be as different as is likely to be encountered, short of finding it on other planets.

Hier ein Schwein, dass nicht das gleiche Glück hat, das ebenfalls einige Rampen herruterrutschte, aber nicht mehr gerettet wurde, sondern in einem Schlachthaus landete. Der Blick des Schweins, kurz vor seinem Tod, direkt in die Kamera, wird mich bei jedem zukünftigen Schnitzel verfolgen.
Schweine teilen drölfneunzig Prozent unserer Gene und gelten als eine der intelligentesten Wesen dieses Planeten und ganz ehrlich, bei diesem einen Bild kommen mir als bekennendem Fleischesser sehr, sehr arge Bedenken, I mean… look at this…

Here is an interesting part – they also group IQ Scores by referrer website and by client browser and operating system.

The Crow @ TED-Talks
Als ich gestern diesen Vortrag über Krähen von Joshua Klein im TED-Blog gesehen habe, habe ich noch gedacht: „Ach, naja… Krähen. Die seh ich selbst jeden Tag.“ Als das Ding dann eben nochmal bei BoingBoing aufgetaucht ist, habe ich’s mir mal angesehen und POW! Bei 3:42min ist mir eben dermaßen derbe die Kinnlade auf den Boden gefallen… ich wusste ja, dass Krähen schlau sind. Aber dass sie so intelligent sind und selbständig Draht verbiegen, um Futter in einem Behälter zu erreichen, wusste ich nicht. Auch nicht, dass sie bei grün über die Straße gehen. Kein Scheiß.
