Turkeys Standing Man Protest-Meme
In der Türkei hat sich während der Demonstrationen eine spontane Protest-Meme entwickelt, die sich über Twitter verbreitete. Zunächst hatte sich ein Mann – Erdem Gündüz heisst er und ist Performance-Künstler – alleine auf die Straße gestellt und der stand da ein paar Stunden rum. Währenddessen stellten sich immer mehr Leute dazu und starrten auf die Flagge der Türkei. Die Bilder sprechen für sich. Großartig!

Vadering is the new Hadouken-Meme
Vadering ist das neue Hadouken, die Meme geht auf Twitter bereits ziemlich steil, den Anfang machte wohl dieses Posting auf Reddit: In response to HADOKEN-ing, I give you… Vadering.
Und auf Reddit in den Comments vermutet man eine Viralkampagne von Chick-Fil-A: „It’s the perfect orientation of the Chick-Fil-A cup so its logo is both facing the camera, and the hand is below it. It makes it instantaneously recognizable.“ Das passt wunderbar zu dem Quartz-Artikel zu Harlem Shake, der neulich rumging und den ich eher für Bullshit hielt: Ja, Unternehmen waren sehr früh an der Meme beteiligt aber nein, sie haben sie nicht wirklich initiiert. Wobei die Schlüsse, die Kevin Ashton dort zieht, dann aber doch wieder richtig sind: „The technology may have changed, but the money still flows the same way: to creators of contracts not creators of content.“
Wie auch immer: Ob Vadering jetzt von Chick-Fil-A inszeniert wurde, oder nicht – Vadering is a Thing. Die Meme ist (wie dieses Hadouken-Dings) natürlich „nur“ eine user-generated und vermemte Version der „Levitation“-Fotografie von Yowayowa und anderen. Ein sehr schönes Beispiel, wie Kunst im Netz mit einer gewissen Verzögerung ein Echo findet und mit Popkultur-Remixen wiedergegeben wird. Was für mich der sehr viel spannendere Aspekt dieser Form der Memes ist. Und: In response to HADOKEN-ing and Vadering, I give you “Public Pottering”. JUMP!

Many of the photos […] were uploaded to Twitter within the last week or so. On Twitter, Japanese teens are saying that this is how they’ve recently been goofing off with friends.
During the 1980s, when the Dragon Ball anime was on primetime television, kids would unleash Kamehameha attacks on each for fun at school or in the park. The difference here is that teens these days can snap digital photos and upload them for instant internet fame.

Morrissey wollte für den Re-Release seiner Single „The Last of the International Playboys“ ein Foto von sich zusammen mit David Bowie von 1992 auf dem Cover haben. Da hatte Bowie aber keine Lust drauf, also hat er Rick Astley gefragt und der meinte natürlich nur: „Never gonna let you down“. Und so hat der Moz dann ungefähr fünf Jahre zu spät eine Rickroll gepullt, jetzt zeigt das Cover das Bild oben, eine Backstage-Aufnahme von Top of the Pops 1989.

Ich will das nochmal betonen: Ich halte den Harlem Shake für die perfekte Meme. Universell einsetzbar und technisch supereinfach zu produzieren, funktioniert als Flashmob, mit Freunden, als Animation, als Movie-Remix und ist so inhaltlich leer, dass der Shake als Variable für jegliche Aussage dienen kann, sei es Unsinn oder sogar politischer Protest. Das hat sich jetzt auch die Muslim Brotherhood in Ägypten gedacht, die als Antwort auf die Shake-Proteste vergangene Woche einfach ihre eigene Version online gestellt haben. Ein muslimischer Harlem Shake Dance-Off. Jetzt bitte noch die Taliban und der CIA und dann Weltfrieden durch Web-Craze, Völkerverständigung per Internet-Meme.
Egypt’s Muslim Brotherhood, the controversial Islamist group that is tied to Egyptian President Mohammad Morsi, has gotten in on the act — even if they now appear to regret it. Ahmad al-Mogheer, “an active member in the Brotherhood’s online communities” according to Al Arabiya, has confirmed he is the bare-chested man in the video [above].
In the video al-Mogheer and others wear “masks” with the faces of opposition group National Salvation Front, apparently mocking what the video calls “Salvation’s Last Dance.”

Kurzer Nachtrag zum Harlem Shake: Nachdem die Billboard-Charts YT-Streams in ihren Algorithmus aufgenommen haben, ist Baauers Vorlage zur Meme von 0 auf 1 gestürmt. Ohne Copyright, ein reines Internetphänomen. Andy Baio analysiert das ganze und schreibt auf, was das mit Crowdfunding und Independent Artists zu tun hat:
Baauer’s “Harlem Shake” is the first song from a largely unknown artist to debut at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100.
Since 1958, only 21 songs have ever debuted at #1. Of those 21 songs, only four were from artists appearing on the Hot 100 for the first time — three American Idol winners (Clay Aiken, Fantasia Barrino and Carrie Underwood) and a popular artist going solo (Lauryn Hill). Source: Billboard.
I’d wager this is another first: “Harlem Shake” is the only song to ever debut at #1 on the Hot 100 without significant radio or TV airplay. This is solely an Internet phenomenon, gone deeply mainstream. This is in no small part because of major changes incorporating YouTube views into the Billboard Hot 100 formula, introduced this week in response to the viral success of “Gangnam Style.”
