David OReilly is the Glitchwizard of Oooo: Datamoshing Adventure-Time

Habt Ihr Adventure Time S05E15 A Glitch Is a Glitch gesehen?

Unbedingte Anschauempfehlung. Rhizome hat jetzt ein Interview mit OReilly: Datamoshing the Land of Ooo: A Conversation with David OReilly.

DR: How much of the “stylistic” glitching came directly from “real” glitches? In other words, what processes did you use to introduce random, glitchy elements into the design process? Did you have to cheat to get the “stylistic” results you wanted?

DO: It was all generated from “real” glitches—but since everything is run through compositing software and sort of controlled you could also say it was all fake. The glitches needed to begin locally—inside objects—then spread out until they became part of the scene itself. The local stuff was done by generating a ton of sprites that had random pixels move outwardly to create the colorful flourishes we associate with video compression. These had a decent amount of control—a blob of glitchy stuff could move around a scene, for example. Once the scenes were fully animated and rendered the global full-frame glitches were done. There was some jpeg corruption added on top of the battle scene at the end.

Nach dem Klick nochmal seine beiden Kurzfilme The External World und Please Say Something sowie sein Animations-Bit für Tim & Eric Professor Genki’s Super Ethical Reality Climax einen Timelapse-Clip seiner Arbeit am Cover zum Mindsploitation-Magazin, mehr von OReillys Arbeiten findet man in seinem Vimeo-Channel: Gib mir den Rest, Baby…

Bill Gates AMA on Reddit

Well played, Mr. Gates.

Vintage Interview with Lovecraft, handwritten in tiny Letters on a single Postcard sent back and forth

One day [Sherwood, the owner of the Baskets Bookstore/Paperback Palace] handed me a postcard sent between H.P. Lovecraft and Arthur H. Goodenough, an amateur press enthusiast living near Brattleboro. Goodenough isn’t talked about much today, but Brattleboro is still full of Goodenough — there’s a road named for the family (or was the family named for the road?), a trash removal firm, you name it.

Lovecraft was acquainted with Goodenough, and Lovecraft’s visits to Goodenough in Vermont in 1927 and 1928 are the basis of his wonderful novelette “The Whisperer in Darkness.” After the story was published in Weird Tales, Goodenough sent Lovecraft a congratulatory card, and also asked the author a couple of questions. Rather than responding with a card or letter of his own, Lovecraft wrote the answers in a tiny hand and then apparently gave the card to Vrest Orton — a bookman and eventual founder of The Vermont County Store — who returned the card to Goodenough personally during a trip to the Green Mountain State. Then Goodenough sent the card back to Lovecraft again, with follow-up questions written in a nearly microscopic hand. I suppose he knew the local postmaster, and was able to get the card back into the mail system without a problem. Amazingly, Lovecraft managed to fit the answers to the questions on the postcard in an even smaller hand. Sherwood told me that he’d guessed that Lovecraft used a magnifying glass and a sewing needle dipped in ink.

Louis CK has some Fun, sorta…

What is your idea of perfect happiness?
Not ever having to fill out this questionnaire. […]

What is the trait you most deplore in yourself?
I have an absolutely beautiful penis. It’s stunning in every way. God I hate my perfect penis. […]

Which talent would you most like to have?
I wish I could draw. I can’t make a thing in my mind go on paper. I draw like a child. Like a heavily beaten and molested child. Who can’t draw.

What is your current state of mind?
I’m sort of depressed, actually. I wish you hadn’t asked. […]

What do you consider your greatest achievement?
There’s this one girl in Oklahoma City. We had sex on New Year’s Eve. She was 19. I was about 23. She was way out of my league. Still can’t believe that one. I hope she’s O.K. now.

Pussy Riot: The Jail Interview

„Katya’s answers got confiscated. Nadya’s and Masha’s follow.“

GQ: What is your average day like now? How do you get the news from the outside?

Masha: They have small, medium, and large cells here. We’re in three different small ones. Only the large cells have in-room showers; we get showers once a week. After 6 a.m., you’re not allowed to sleep under a blanket. Theoretically, until lights-out at 10 p.m., you’re not allowed to sleep at all, but in practice you can lie on top of the blanket and cover yourself with your coat. Nobody can explain why; the only answer you hear to any question is “That’s the rule” and “We keep to a regimen here.” Every day there’s an hour-long walk in a “yard,” which is a concrete box with two benches and a sliver of sky between a cement wall and a plastic roof. It’s all “Hug the wall” this and “Hands behind your back” that. They search our cells regularly and confiscate our drawings and notes. Why? “The rules.” Pretty much the only news we get is from federal TV channels. Only now do I realize the sheer amount of lies and censorship there. When you have the Internet, you don’t feel it as sharply. But once a week our lawyers bring us different news, words of support, and that helps a lot.

Dan Spitz: Anthrax-Guitarist, Maker of Watches

Ich hab’ mir tatsächlich vor ein paar Tagen erst mal wieder Anthrax’ „Among the Living“ (I am the Law!) auf Spotisfy angehört, da lese ich, dass Ex-Gitarrist Dan Spitz jetzt Uhren baut und da richtig gut ist. Awesome!

“When it comes to a watch’s quality, the truth is that the movement sucks ass or the movement kicks ass. With me, you are going to get the heavy metal answer from the heavy metal dude.”

Dan Spitz, former lead guitarist for thrash metal band Anthrax, has sold more than 15 million albums, been nominated for 3 Grammy’s, created over 10 studio albums – and now he is recognized as one of the best watchmakers in the world. After leading one of the greatest metal bands of all time, he abruptly departed Anthrax and pursued numerous courses of study to master the art of watchmaking.

Oliver Sacks on Drugs and Hallucinations

„I was heavily into Amphetamines.“ Der Podcast nervt erstmal fünf Minuten lang mit etwas anderem, dann kommt Olli: „Here Sacks talks with John Bennet and Sasha Weiss about some of his drug-induced hallucinations, how his interest in neurology connects to his experimentation with drugs, and how one drug experience led to his writing career.“

Oliver SacksHave you ever seen something that wasn’t really there? Heard someone call your name in an empty house? Sensed someone following you and turned around to find nothing?

Hallucinations don’t belong wholly to the insane. Much more commonly, they are linked to sensory deprivation, intoxication, illness, or injury. People with migraines may see shimmering arcs of light or tiny, Lilliputian figures of animals and people. People with failing eyesight, paradoxically, may become immersed in a hallucinatory visual world. Hallucinations can be brought on by a simple fever or even the act of waking or falling asleep, when people have visions ranging from luminous blobs of color to beautifully detailed faces or terrifying ogres. Those who are bereaved may receive comforting “visits” from the departed. In some conditions, hallucinations can lead to religious epiphanies or even the feeling of leaving one’s own body.

Humans have always sought such life-changing visions, and for thousands of years have used hallucinogenic compounds to achieve them. As a young doctor in California in the 1960s, Oliver Sacks had both a personal and a professional interest in psychedelics. These, along with his early migraine experiences, launched a lifelong investigation into the varieties of hallucinatory experience.

Making Of Napster: Interview mit Shawn Fanning

Rob Walker speaks to Shawn Fanning, the founder of Napster, the file sharing website that enabled music lovers to download songs from other people’s computers. Its success was meteoric but shortlived.

The Story of Richie Hawtin

Radio 1′s Heidi looks at the career and influence of long term friend Richie Hawtin. Heidi is ideally placed to tell the story of Richie as they both grew up in Windsor, Ontario, across the river from the birthplace of techno, Detroit.

Just before the start of a hectic Ibiza season, Heidi caught up with Richie at his flat in Berlin to talk in detail about his life to date. Hear her discover more about his early success as Plastikman, his label Plus 8 and his legendary warehouse parties in Detroit. They then move on to talk about his move first to New York and then on to Berlin. And the founding of M_nus, a record label and family of artists that went on to define the sound of minimal techno. Aside from the music, Rich and Heidi discuss his technical innovation and the live shows with M_nus and Plastikman that have helped define DJ culture itself.

Also featuring Seth Troxler and Ryan Crosson from Visionquest, Detroit legends Juan Atkins, Carl Craig and Jeff Mills, Richie’s brother Matthew and dad Mick, former M_nus members Magda, Marc Houle and Troy Pierce and long term friends Josh Wink and Loco Dice.
