The fruit bat skeleton has been recreated approximately to the actual size from a combination of casting and hand, cold forging silver wire. The tiny finger bones, ribs and leg bones have been meticulously filed, hammered and soldered to replicated the delicate bones of the fruit bat. This wee bat has seen better days and could not keep all its little ribs in tact but is still a feisty little bugger! Watch out for the tiny claws!
The wingspan of the bat is approximately 12.” Total height is about 10.” The silver chain that goes around the neck is about 10″ and the span between the two paws is about 6.5.” The clasp of this chain is made out of the thumb talons. Das Fabergé Museum in Baden Baden hat für 800000 Euro ein avantgardistisches Fabergé-Ei mit Wodka-Frühstück gekauft.
Auf einem Ziegelstein aus rotem Jaspis liegt ein auf Silber emaillierter Abschnitt einer St. Petersburger Zeitung vom 18. Oktober 1905. Das war Tag der Veröffentlichung vom berühmten s.g. „Oktobermanifest” des Zaren Nikolaus II. vom 17. Oktober 1905. In diesem Manifest, wie bekannt, veranlasste der russische Zar die Einführung des Parlamentes und des allgemeinen Wahlrechtes. Er sicherte damit jedem Bürger die Meinungs-, Religions- und Gewissensfreiheit zu.
Das Manifest war der Vorläufer der ersten russischen Verfassung. Neben dem Zeitungsabschnitt sind auf dem Ziegelstein aus hochwertigen Edelmaterialien gearbeitete Speisereste dargestellt, ein Spiegelei mit einem Eidotter aus gelbem Bernstein auf schlohweißer Emaille, zwei Fische aus ziseliertem Silber, ein halbvolles Glas Wodka (Kristallglas) und ein ausgedrückter Zigarettenstummel aus Quarz mit einer Zigarettenspitze aus Silber.

My concept is a material exploration of attraction and aversion and how we can feel these seemingly opposing emotional responses simultaneously. The necklaces are made of human hair, a material we are familiar with and take pride in. However once off of the body it becomes an innate source of aversion. I wanted to see if I could make discarded hair attractive again.
Through the familiar form of a necklace, and using patterns and symmetry that we instinctively find aesthetically pleasing, I hoped to create a delicate balance between the viewer/wearers feelings of aversion and attraction.

Flora Davis macht Schmuck aus dem Fell ihrer Katze Gaia: Kartenfell-Geschmeide. Einer der seltenen Fälle, in denen mir das deutsche Wort besser gefällt, als das englische. Cat-Fur Jewelry klingt zwar nett, aber Katzenfell-Geschmeide hat einen tollen Rhytmus, drei Silben in jedem Wort, das eine mit einem harten („Katz“), das andere mit einem weichen („-schmei“) Klang. Das ist wie ein repetitives Drumpattern mit dem Clap auf der 1 und einem weichen Hi-Hat auf der 2. Super! Und überhaupt: Schmuck aus Katzenfell. Jeez.
