Youtube hat heute die ersten Filme für ihren offiziellen Video-On-Demand-Dienst Youtube Movies freigeschaltet. Neben der geschnittenen und zerstückelten und unansehbaren deutschen Version von Romeros „Dawn of the Dead“ gibt es David Lynchs krude „Dune“-Verfilmung und den angestaubten „Running Man“, sowie Fritz Langs hervorragenden „M – Eine Stadt sucht einen Moerder“ von 1931 und Carpenters Erstling „Dark Star“, der trotz Wasserball-Alien und Schuhkarton-Tricks auch heute noch ganz prima funktioniert.

Death Waltz ist ein neues Plattenlabel von Spencer Hickman (Rough Trade) und die legen Soundtracks neu auf, und zwar als Vinyl-Releases und limitierten Releases in colored Vinyl mit exklusiven Artworks bekannter Designer. Wie Mondo Tees für Soundtracks, quasi. Snake Plissken in bunt ist natürlich schon lange ausverkauft, demnächst kommt aber der Soundtrack von Carpenters Prince of Darkness oder auch Ti Wests House of the Devil mit Artwork von Tom „The Dude Designs“ Hodge. Großartiges Konzept, stilsichere Auswahl. Toll!

John Carpenter not only directed Escape From New York but also composed and recorded all of its music too. This score sounds as fresh today as it did when it was first released. Lee Hardcastle hat zwei Minuten Knet-Thing mit Pinguinen gemacht. Epic! Hier die 60-Sekunden-Version. Disclosure: Das Ding entstand für den Wettbewerb Done in 60 Seconds, bei dessen deutschem Teil ich in der Jury sitze. Hat mit dem Clip oben aber nur wenig zu tun.

Kiersten Essenpreis hat für ihren Mann und sich selbst They Live-Kostüme für Halloween gebastelt. Super! Richtig abgefahren wäre das ja gekommen, wenn sie noch dazu die Technik vom Desaturated Santa angewandt hätte… aber das ist auch so toll. (via Superpunch)

John Carpenter präsentiert Funny or Dies Halloween-Spoofs. Die sind meistens nicht wirklich lustig, den Charlie Brown-Sketch haben sie ziemlich verkackt, Cat Thrower ist ganz amüsant, genau wie obiger Monster-Mash-Softporn. Schick fotografiert ist immerhin 1:00 On Cedar Lane, dafür ist das aber nicht mehr als eine Vignette. Jedenfalls: So richtig gut ist das alles nicht, das passt dann aber auch wieder. Ich erwarte bei Funny or Die ja nichts wirklich lustiges. Und von Carpenter erwarte ich keinen wirklich guten Film heutzutage.

Broken Sea haben vor einem Jahr John Carpenters „Escape from New York“ als Hörspiel adaptiert. Ich hör’ grade den ersten Teil und der klingt schonmal sehr großartig. Alle Teile gibt’s bei Swen: Escape From New York – The Audio Book. Und: Die Hörspielreihe des CBS Radio Mystery Theater hat alle 1399 Episoden online gestellt, darunter (passend zu Halloween, immer runterscrollen zum Download):

X-Posting von den Filmfreunden: Die Macher der Musicalversionen von Robocop, Terminator II, Conan, Total Recall, Phantom Commando, Rambo II, Predator und Sean Connery haben sich endlich die lustig gemeinte aber eigentlich furchtbare Nöl-Stimme abgewöhnt und eine wirklich tolle Musical-Version von John Carpenters „The Thing“ im Sinatra-Style auf die Beine gestellt. Super!

Fairey credits They Live as a “major source of inspiraton” for his own subversive brand of street art. “They Live was … the basis for my use of the word ‘obey,’” Fairey said in a statement. “The movie has a very strong message about the power of commercialism and the way that people are manipulated by advertising.”
Describing his 2003 exhibition, This Is Your God, Fairey noted: “One of my main concepts with the show, and the [Obey] campaign as a whole, was that obedience is the most valuable currency. People rarely consider how much power they sacrifice by blindly following a self-serving corporation’s marketing agenda, and how their spending habits reflect the direction in which they choose to transfer power.” They Live addresses those same issues, Fairey said.

It all started to go wrong with Reagan. Every president leaves a legacy, but in my opinion none have left a legacy so skewed by rosy nostalgia, and so damaging to this day, as Ronald Reagan. Reagan was pro-big business and anti-working class and anti-union (he fired all of the striking air traffic controllers). His economic policies known as Reaganomics collectively led not only to the buildup of a massive budget deficit, thanks to large increases in military spending coupled with huge tax cuts, but also laid the groundwork for an economic crisis. If it all ended in 1989 when he left office it would have been bad enough, but Republicans were so enamored with Reagan and Reaganomics that they tried it again under George W. Bush, with similarly disastrous consequences.

You may not know the name Alan Howarth, but you’ll surely have heard his music before. He’s been involved with the sound design of movies like Raiders of the Lost Ark, Poltergeist and all of the Star Trek movies. Some of his finest work, though, has come in collaboration with John Carpenter, whose soundtrack to Escape from New York has been beloved, rinsed and re-edited by countless DJs. Renowned for his murky and unstable atmospheres, Howarth’s work is perfect for this time of year, which is exactly why we asked him to delve into his archives to provide a special Halloween mix in honor of his performances at this year’s Unsound festival.

„The Thing“ mit Stop-Motion-GI-Joes

Simon Gesrel und Xavier Ehretsmann drehten dieses „The Thing“-Remake mit Stop-Motion-GI-Joes zu „Driving this road until death sets you free“ der französischen Elektroniker Zombie Zombie, einem Song der hörbar an den Soundtrack des Films angelehnt ist. Das Teil ging schonmal vor ein paar Monaten rum, damals übersah ich allerdings, dass da gegen Ende dann doch nochmal ein paar Monster auftauchen. Huah!
