Felix Baumgartners Sprung aus der Stratosphäre als YT-Clip und als GIF und das Bild, das mich am meisten beeindruckt hat: Der Moment, als er die Luke aufgemacht hatte. Ich hätte nicht gedacht, dass das nochmal so fetzen würde, aber ich hab’ tatsächlich Fingernägelkauend zusammen mit 8 Millionen Leuten vor’m Screen gesessen und das Gehüpfe auf mehreren Livestreams (Twitter, YT, ServusTV) verfolgt. So geht Fernsehen 2012. Glückwunsch an Herrn Felix!
The Red Bull Stratos team says Baumgartner has broken the record for the highest manned balloon flight, having surpassed 113,740 feet on his way to roughly 128,000 feet, and that should also set the record for the highest freefall. His freefall time of 4 minutes, 22 seconds does not break the record for the longest freefall (4:36). It remains to be determined whether he went supersonic or broke the speed record, but he was freefalling at more than 600 mph.

Seit einer Weile läuft bereits der Livestream von Felix Baumgartners Sprung aus der Stratosphäre, diesmal wirds anscheinend ernst, nachdem sie den Sprung vor ein paar Tagen ein paar mal verschieben mussten und ihn schließlich absagten.
Red Bull Stratos is a mission to the edge of space that will try to surpass human limits that have existed for more than 50 years. Supported by a team of experts, Felix Baumgartner will undertake a stratospheric balloon flight to more than 120,000 feet / 36,576 meters and make a record-breaking freefall jump in the attempt to become the first man to break the speed of sound in freefall (an estimated 690 miles / 1,110 kilometers per hour), while delivering valuable data for medical and scientific advancement.

[update] Der Sprung wurde wegen Windes auf 15:30 Uhr verschoben, allerdings waren die Server von Red Bull jetzt schon down und der Stream auf YT lädt sich auch tot. N-TV berichtet live, hier der Stream, Alternativen gerne in die Comments.
Heute um 14:30 Uhr spring Felix Baumgartner aus dem größten Ballon, der jemals gebaut wurde, aus 36.576 Metern höhe und versucht, eine Geschwindigkeit von 1,2 Mach zu erreichen, um die Schallmauer zu durchbrechen. Damit wäre er der erste Mensch, der das ohne Schutz eines Vehikels geschafft hat. Der Rekord für den höchsten Sprung ist 50 Jahre alt und wird von Air Force Colonel Joseph Kittinger gehalten, den Sprung kennt Ihr möglicherweise aus einem Musikvideo für „Davyan Cowboy“ von den Boards of Canada:
Joe’s record jump from 102,800 ft in 1960 was during a time when no one knew if a human could survive a jump from the edge of space. Joe was a Captain in the U.S. Air Force and had already taken a balloon to 97,000 feet in Project ManHigh and survived a drogue mishap during a jump from 76,400 feet in Excelsior I. The Excelsior III mission was his 33rd parachute jump.
Although researching extremes was part of the program’s goals, setting records wasn’t the mission’s purpose. Joe ascended in helium balloon launched from the back of a truck. He wore a pressurized suit on the way up in an open, unpressurized gondola. Scientific data captured from Joe’s jump was shared with U.S. research personnel for development of the space program. Today Felix and his specialized team hope to take what was learned from Joe’s jumps more than 50 years ago and press forward to test the edge of the human envelope.

It seems that the first US patent for an internal-combustion powered ‘Pogo’ stick was issued to inventor R.J. Mays back in 1950.
The jumping machine was intended to run on gasoline, and, according its creator was “…highly efficient and amusing in operation.” It’s not altogether clear whether May’s power-stick ever went into production, but a similar(ish) device, which was granted a US patent ten years later, did. According its inventor Mr. G. Spitzmesser, the stick – known commercially as ‘The Hop Rod’ was “…extremely safe and harmless and of tremendous entertainment value.”

Philippe Halsman ist wohl einer der berühmtesten Fotografen der Welt, eine seiner bekanntesten Arbeiten mit Dali und Katzen hatte ich vor Ewigkeiten mal hier, ich wusste aber nicht, dass das Bild aus einer ganzen Serie mit Jump-Fotos stammt, die alle möglichen Berühmtheiten aus vergangenen Tagen beim Rumhüpfen zeigt.
Die Laurence Miller Gallery in New York stellt noch bis Ende Mai eine Sammlung dieser Dotzbilder aus, oben von links nach rechts und oben nach unten: Harold Lloyd, Audrey Hepburn, Richard Nixon und Jerry Lewis & Dean Martin. Auf der Seite zur Ausstellung gibt’s noch Marilyn Monroe, Aldous Huxley oder Jane Mansfield. Alle am Rumspringen!
Philippe Halsman […] had the bold and unconventional idea back in the 1950’s to ask the famous and prominent people he was commissioned to photograph for the likes of LIFE, LOOK and the Saturday Evening Post, once the formal sessions were over, to jump! The results were amazing, as each subject interpreted this bizarre request in their own unique way, often defying their typical public image. We see Richard Nixon as he floats twelve inches above the floor with a peaceful smile on his face, a far cry from the scowl many of us ultimately remember him by. And there is the rather large Jackie Gleason, in a handsome dark suit and his fingers extended wide, defying gravity as he lifts off, and from somewhere off-camera we can’t help but hear “To the moon, Alice.”
Marilyn Monroe, Brigitte Bardot, Salvador Dali, Weegee, Jack Dempsey and even the Duke and Duchess of Windsor agreed to take a leap of faith. In that era of live television along with the popularity of the big glossy magazines, one’s image was not nearly as protected and shaped by handlers as it is today. There was a feeling of innocence, a desire for spontaneity, and Halsman, with his playful and charming personality, knew he had to get almost everyone to oblige his demand: JUMP!

English Russia hat Bilder einer neuen, russischen Variante des Bungee-Jumping. In der wartet ein Grüppchen Leute auf einer Bahnbrücke auf den Zug und springen kurz bevor der dann vorbeirauscht alle gemeinsam von der Brücke. WTF?!
It’s new fun in some Russian cities, to jump from the bridge with the rope in a big group, when there is no water under the bridge but raw firm ice, also they use to jump at that same moment when the train is going thru the bridge – just imagine what the machinist could think when he sees a bunch of people standing on the rails just before the moving train, so he probably starts slowing down and then all those people jump out of the bridge…

Von allen, allen Retrogames, ever, ist Jumpman mein Lieblingsspiel. Echt jetz! Ich schreibe das jetzt nicht nur deshalb, weil die Menschen/der Mensch von Mechanically Separated Meat das Game für das Jahr 2009 geremixed haben. Ich hab die 2009er Version gerade angezockt und sie ist leider nicht ganz so fantastisch, wie das Original. Aber egal: Jumpman is fucking back!
