The Kids of 1995

Also: R.I.P. Casper, R.I.P. Harold.
Kids came from the minds of Korine, a skate kid from Tennessee whose grandmother lived in Queens and hung out with Harold and his friends, and Clark, already known for his gritty, sexualized youth photography. (Clark had started photographing the crew in the early 1990s.) It was the first film for both, and the camera barely leaves the kids, none of whom were actors at the time; all were plucked from Harold’s skater crew and elsewhere downtown.
Those of us who watched Kids as adolescents, growing up in an era before iPhones, Facebook, and Tiger Moms, had our minds blown from wherever we were watching–whether it was the Angelika Film Center on the Lower East Side or our parents’ Midwestern basements. We were captivated by the entirely unsupervised teens smoking blunts, drinking forties, hooking up, running amok and reckless through the New York City streets. Simultaneously, the driving storyline highlighted the terror of HIV and AIDS, which was at its apex in the mid-nineties.
LEGENDS NEVER DIE by Caroline Rothstein: „Two decades after a low-budget film turned Washington Square skaters into international celebrities, the kids from “Kids” struggle with lost lives, distant friendships, and the fine art of growing up.“ (via Boing Boing)
High School Stopmotion set to Cheers Elephants „Leaves“
Bulletproof School Uniforms and Whiteboards for Schools
Fuck yeah, America!

Bulletproof whiteboards are being introduced in some US schools in what is being seen as adding a last-resort layer of safety for teachers and students against shootings. The schools include one where there was an attack a decade ago in which two students were killed.
The 18-by-20in (46-51cms) boards use a material apparently stronger than police-issue bulletproof vests and can be used as a shield in an emergency. Among the places where they are being installed is the Rocori School District in Minnesota which has acquired nearly 200 of them.

IXI-Play, the dancing Robot
Youtube Direktdance, via Creepy Robots
Swearing Kids Supercut

Schöner Supercut der HuffPo voller fluchender Kinder:
According to a new book about the history of swearing, babies often learn to curse before they have mastered the entire alphabet. Most children know one swear by age 2, but bad language development “really ‘kicks off’ around the ages of 3 or 4,” TIME reports.
Well sh*t, that can’t be good.
Kids Hackathon in Berlin:
„HacKIDemia, OpenTechSchool and Toywheel are bringing the hackathon format of working together on technology in interactive workshops to the world of Kids in Berlin with their first Kids Hackathon on Sunday, April 28th 2013.“
Reasons why her son is crying:
I know it’s cruel to laugh at it, but this is hilarious: Reasons My Son Is Crying. „I told him that forcefully cramming his toys into his brother’s face is not the same as ‘sharing’.“
Pinky and The Brain-School in Nigeria

The Brain-Schule, inklusive Pinky & The Brain-Hymne:
We are the children of Pinky and the Brain, Children growing in wisdom, age and grace.
We lift our voices to thank God; the giver of life.
Shout it out, far and wide,
Pinky and the Brain first among equal,
Pinky and the Brain, the flag bearer, for others to follow.

World of Classcraft: Gamified Education

World of Warcraft spielbar macht.
World of Classcraft is an educational augmented-reality multiplayer role-playing game. Played in the classroom, students play as one of three classes, gaining awesome powers, while risking a terrible death. […]
Our experience show that students are very motivated (including girls) to perform in the game. The motivation to gain real life powers, the randomness of the events and the risk involved in avoiding death are all factors that make the game motivating. To our knowledge, World of Classcraft, is the the only example of gamification in education to completely transform the classroom into a large-scale game. Moreover, World of Classcraft is subject-agnostic, in the sense that it can be played in any subject. Another advantage of World of Classcraft is that it can be implemented without all the students having to play; students who don’t want to play (something like 10%, generally) don’t have to.
Melting Boardgame teaches Climate Change
Thomas schreibt mir:
GEOlino, the German science magazine for children, wanted its young readers to experience the effects of global warming. Not with dry-as-dust theory, but in a completely child-oriented way. That’s why we’ve developed MELTDOWN – the first board game that melts.
The aim of the game is to take a polar bear family from the permanent ice floes to safety on the mainland. It’s a race against time, as the way leads across real, slowly melting ice floes, which children can make themselves with the accompanying mould, a bit of water and a freezer compartment. The chunks of ice are arranged on a blue polar sea sponge to form a small Arctic. The sponge is used as the game board and absorbs the melted ice at the same time. Now you can start saving polar bears.
MELTDOWN makes children experience the effects of global warming in a playful way. Without any wagging finger – just one hand to roll the dice.
Meltdown – The first board game that melts (Danke Thomas!)

5 Years ago: The Amazing Adventures of Little Batman
Heute vor fünf Jahren bloggte ich den halbstündigen Fanfilm „The Amazing Adventures of Little Batman“ von Joe Valenti und seinen Kids, ein paar Monate bevor Michel Gondry mit „Be kind, rewind“ ‘ne ganze Welle von Sweded-Movies auslöste.
This fan film is based on the 1966 Batman TV series where a very young Bruce Wayne takes on the famous, pint-sized villains of Gotham City. Directed, shot and edited by Joe Valenti of Valenti Vision Films and Produced by Jordan Wachtell.

3D-Printed Toys made from Kids’ Drawings

3D-Gedruckte Toys aus Kinderzeichnungen, die Kritzeleien vom Nachwuchs als Actionfigur. Super!
Children drawings are weird and beautiful. Kids produce an immense amount of drawings that populate fridges, living rooms and workspaces of parents, family & friends. Those drawings are amazing, We love them. Here you can turn those drawings into volumetric figurines. […] We will bring to life the kid’s artwork by modeling a digital sculpture and turning it into a real object using 3D Printing technology.
