What happens when you mix soap bubbles and lasers? Memo Akten, 1/3 of Marshmallow Laser Feast, just got hold of Etherdream DAC laser and has been “messing” with it using openFrameworks.
Memo developed software to control this ILDA controllable laser projector (or any other pro laser projector), for realtime interactive laser interaction with openFrameworks, on OSX, and is releasing everything (including firmware of the etherdream) opensource.

Chris Cunninghams Robot-Lasershow:Jaqapparatus 1
From his formative years sculpting alien heads to his recent “jaqapparatus 1″ robotic performance-art installation, seminal music video director-turned-artist Chris Cunningham retraces his varied and critically acclaimed career in this personal, self-directed short. One of an elite group of directors alongside Spike Jonze, Michel Gondry and Jonathan Glazer who redefined MTV in the 1990s, Cunningham elevated the pop promo to a burgeoning art form with daring and disturbing music videos for the likes of Aphex Twin, Björk and Madonna. While his peers graduated to the big screen, Cunningham went underground, quit making promos and commercials, and spent the best part of a decade experimenting with fusions of film, music, art and technology that culminated in a string of live audio-visual performances at festivals in Japan and Europe.
For “jaqapparatus 1″, his first installation unveiled last month at the Audi City London high-tech concept store—a shadowy, sci-fi set involving two laser-firing robots locked in what seemed like a brutal mating ritual-cum-war—Cunningham cast two Talos motion-controlled camera rigs as his anthropomorphized protagonists. “Mounted on the robots heads are powerful lasers which they use to attack, repel and communicate with each other,” explains Cunningham, “a kind of duel, a surreal mating display which sees each machine trying to dominate the other.”

Mars Rock tweets his Laser-Execution
My robot friend is still staring, and is making a strange clicking noise now. It’s kind of making me nervous. :/

A small stone lying just to the side of the vehicle at its landing site on the floor of Gale Crater has been selected as a test target for the ChemCam laser. The brief but powerful burst of light from this instrument will vaporise the surface of the rock, revealing details of its basic chemistry. Dubbed N165, the object is not expected to have any science value, but should show ChemCam is ready for serious work.

Irans Laser Pointers shaped to look like miniature Nuclear Enrichment Centrifuges

You know how at big conferences, companies sometimes give out pens or calendars or refrigerator magnets to advertise their brand?
Well, it was apparently in that spirit that at the IAEA general conference last month, Lewis reports, the Iranian delegation gave out its own swag–only at this gathering, the Iranians chose to hand out not pens or t-shirts, but laser pointers shaped to look like miniature nuclear enrichment centrifuges.
“Yes, the Islamic Republic of Iran distributed laser pointers in the shape of a centrifuge,” Lewis, a counter-proliferation expert, marveled at his blog, Arms Control Wonk. Lewis posted a photo of Iran’s nuclear-themed swag provided by a colleague who requested anonymity. The laser pointers were emblazoned with the phrase “Nuclear Energy for All, Nuclear Weapon for None”–apparently a dis at Israel among other nuclear powers whom Iran accuses, not entirely incorrectly, of employing a double-standard in their approach to nuclear proliferation. The word “Uranium” circles the bottom of the pointer, as you can see in the photo above.

Vintage Lasers Unlimited
Schicker oller Lehrfilm aus AT&Ts Archiv: Laser Unlimited.
Nine years after the invention of the laser, the technology had not only captured the imagination of the science fiction community (as shown in the first sequence in this film), it had also been put to use in a number of practical applications.
In this film we see early laser tattoo removal, barcodes on railroad cars read by laser, lasers cutting apart microcircuit boards, laser levels helping with aircraft production, and many more applications. Holograms and holographic technologies are given special focus – laser memory storage was still a few years away, and in 1969 they thought holograms were going to be much more important in the future than they are today.

Living Laser made from human Kidney-Cells and Jellyfish
They injected a human kidney cell with a loop of DNA that codes for an enhanced form of green fluorescent protein. Originally isolated from jellyfish, GFP glows green when exposed to blue light and has been invaluable as a biological beacon, tracking the path of molecules inside cells and lighting up when certain genes are expressed.
After placing the cell between two mirrors, the researchers bombarded it with pulses of blue light until it began to glow. As the green light bounced between the mirrors, certain wavelengths were preferentially amplified until they burst through the semi-transparent mirrors as laser light. Even after a few minutes of lasing, the cell was still alive and well.

WANT! Weil die Auktion und damit die Bilder von Ebay irgendwann gelöscht werden, habe ich die Bilder mal in mein Flickr hochgeladen: Lucasfilms Cease and Desist Letter to Wicked Lasers and their Real Life Lightsaber.
Up for grabs is the original, authentic Lucasfilm Ltd. Cease & Desist letter sent to Wicked Lasers in response to their new 1W Arctic 445nm laser.
The letter is unnamed and unsigned.
The term “Danderman” is found on the footer of select pages which leads us to conclude that this document is from the desk of David Anderman himself.
Law.com describes David as the “enforcer of Lucasfilm’s worldwide intellectual property.”
While we hope that Lucasfilm reconsiders their position and merit, we are prepared to defend the rights of our customers and those of the laser industry.

LucasArts mahnt Real Life Lightsaber ab

Lawyers, even dumber than the dumbest Space Slug.
SAN FRANCISCO—(EON: Enhanced Online News)—Earlier this week, Wicked Lasers released photos and information regarding the “Pro Arctic Laser,” a product designed to resemble the famous lightsaber hilt from the Star Wars Saga. Described by Wicked Lasers as “the most dangerous laser ever created,” the product description goes on to say that “extremely dangerous is an understatement.”
Lucasfilm’s General Counsel David Anderman had this response:
“It has come to our attention that a company called Wicked Lasers is selling a highly dangerous product out of Hong Kong that is designed to look like a lightsaber from Star Wars. This product is not licensed or approved by Lucasfilm in any way. We have demanded that Wicked Lasers immediately cease and desist their infringing activities. As Wicked Lasers itself admits, this product can cause serious injury to the user and other people. We strongly discourage consumers from purchasing it.”
