Giant Map of Superpowers

Nice!
In its 3rd iteration, this is the universe’s most extensive charting of superpowers. The sprawling taxonomy of over 200 superpowers and 600 superheroes and villains spreads over six square feet. Powers from the mighty (Super Strength and Immortality) to the meek (Open Any Window) to the weird (Infinite Mouth Storage) are charted, along with the characters that wield these awesome abilities, spanning the past 75 years of comic book history from the giant publishers like Marvel and DC to indies like IDW, Image, and Dark Horse.

Excellent iOS-Map-Glitches

(via AnimalNY)
Tracking Faces in Places: Google Earth Pareidolia
One of the key aspects of this project, is the autonomy of the face searching agent and the amount of data we are investigating. The source of our image data is halfway voluntary provided by Google Maps. Our agent flips through one satellite image after the other, in order to feed the face detection algorithm with landscape samples. The corresponding iteration algorithm steps sequentially along the latitude and longitude of our globe. Once the agent circumnavigated the world, it switches to the next zoom level and starts all over again.

A Map of every Music-Genre
Angeblich eine Karte aller Musik-Genres. Ich vermisse allerdings Eurodoomtrashpoptechnocore. Egal, passt auch so:
This is an algorithmically-generated non-analytical map of the musical genre-space. Genres and artists are positioned by code and data, adjusted for legibility, but the underlying vectors are less interesting than the juxtapositions and clusters that they produce, so the axes have been deliberately left unlabeled and uncalibrated.

Google Streetview Hyperlapse
Vimeo Direktlapse, via Interweb3000
Hyper-lapse photography – a technique combining time-lapse and sweeping camera movements typically focused on a point-of-interest – has been a growing trend on video sites. It’s not hard to find stunning examples on Vimeo. Creating them requires precision and many hours stitching together photos taken from carefully mapped locations. We aimed at making the process simpler by using Google Street View as an aid, but quickly discovered that it could be used as the source material. It worked so well, we decided to design a very usable UI around our engine and release Google Street View Hyperlapse.
The site settings are purposely low (like having a maximum of 60 frames per animation) for greater accessibility. However, all the source code is available on Github (including examples and documentation) so developers can play with higher frame rates, better image quality, and more complicated camera movements.

Map of Superpowers on a T-Shirt

Sweet!
Behold the universe’s most extensive charting of superpowers. This sprawling breakdown features over 300 heroes, anti-heroes, villains, and beasts as well as hand-drawn “Kirby krackle” effect by comic book artist John Amor. Face front, True Believer!

Experimental 3D-Maps of Berlin, San Francisco, London, New York

Sweet!
[Stamen Here] uses 3D data from HERE for San Francisco, New York, London, and Berlin to create city-wide 3D browsable maps, and it does this in the browser (though you’ll need a WebGL-enabled browser to see it). As in many of our other mapping projects, the urls change dynamically depending on location and other factors, and the data conforms, more or less, to the Tile Map Service specification. What this means, among other things, is that it’s not only possible to link to and embed these maps at specific locations and zoom levels, but that it’s easy.
Abandoned McDonalds in Fukushima

Illegal Botnet-Map of the Web

Fun!
“Two years ago while spending some time with the Nmap Scripting Engine (NSE) someone mentioned that we should try the classic telnet login root:root on random IP addresses,” wrote the anonymous researcher behind the Carna botnet. “This was meant as a joke, but was given a try.” […]
Carna turned out to be an effective way of measuring a big chunk of the Internet, but there’s one major catch: It’s illegal and invasive, which no doubt explains why the researcher has remained anonymous. Carna was, as per the name, a botnet, a type of malware secretly loaded into any device it could penetrate. At its peak, the botnet controlled an estimated 420,000 devices.

Classy Submarine Cable Map

The design of our new map was inspired by antique maps and star charts, and alludes to the historic connection between submarine cables and cartography. We drew inspiration from a number of sources including Maury’s New Complete Geography (Revised Edition) published by American Book Company in 1921 and The Timechart History of the World, a collection of antique timelines published by Third Millennium Press.
The map depicts routes of 232 in-service and 12 planned undersea cables. Country dialing codes and capital cities are also provided. Insets provide detailed information about cable landing stations in key regions including New York and New Jersey, Egypt, Cornwall, Hong Kong, Singapore, and Tokyo.

Gravitational Map of the Moon: Giant Flummi in the Sky

This image shows the variations in the lunar gravity field as measured by NASA’s Gravity Recovery and Interior Laboratory (GRAIL) during the primary mapping mission from March to May 2012. Very precise microwave measurements between two spacecraft, named Ebb and Flow, were used to map gravity with high precision and high spatial resolution. The field shown resolves blocks on the surface of about 12 miles (20 kilometers) and measurements are three to five orders of magnitude improved over previous data.
Lasercut Underwater-Topographic Maps made from Wood

Sehr tolle Topografie-Karten von Below The Boat, lasergeschnitzt in übereinandergelegte Holzschichten. Oben die Great Lakes („I love the lakes. Just something very special here. The Great Lakes but also all the little inland lakes that dot the parts of Michigan. I love cars.“ SCNR.)
Starting with a bathymetric chart (the underwater equivalent of a topographic map), the contours are laser-cut into sheets of Baltic birch and glued together to create a powerful visual depth. Select layers are hand-colored blue so it’s easy to discern land from water, major byways are etched into the land, the whole thing’s framed in a custom, solid-wood frame and protected seamlessly with a sheet of durable, ultra-transparent Plexiglas.
The result is stunning. It lifts the surface of the water back like a veil, exposing the often-overlooked, under-explored, awe-inspiring world that lies below. To those familiar with the floor of the ocean or the bed of a lake, it’s a beautiful reminder of the deep channels, sharp drop-offs, and mountainous landscapes that are hidden from normal view. To the uninitiated, it’s wonderfully eye-opening; as though the world suddenly took on a fourth dimension.

Warning: Apple Maps could be life-threatening
Using Apple’s new maps system could be potentially life-threatening, police in Mildura, Australia, have warned, after a number of people trying to find the town of 30,000 people have become hopelessly lost in scorching temperatures.
One man was stranded for 24 hours last week in temperatures of up to 46 degrees centigrade, and at least three more have had to be rescued after following the directions given on Apple’s new maps, which locate Mildura far from its actual position.
