3D-Printed Kinect-Scan-Fitted Masks

This project explores the border territory between physical and virtual, connecting computer code’s abstractions with the intimate, visceral dimension of body alteration’s sense brought by the mask theme. The topographic anatomy of the face acts as input for a set of algorithms that under designer’s control generate the fibers that form the object, creating a material formation that after 3d printing perfectly fits its territory, people’s faces.

The set of objects produced represent a population of differentiated individuals, phenotypes sharing the same genotype. No matter how many masks might be produced, they all will share the same genetic code. The system is then flexible in offering possibilities of formal and diagramatic variation, in creating even highly different objects, customizable on different faces and as expression of different designers.

after years of having people stare and recoil at his disfigurement, surgeons have employed cutting edge three-dimensional printing technology to create a prosthetic face for Mr Moger, 60, in what is thought to be the first procedure of its kind in Britain.

By making scans of what was left of his skull and using computers to recreate what his face would look like, they were able to use a new type of printer that builds up layer upon layer of nylon plastic to produce the components they would need.

Face Stealer: Augmented Reality Mask-App

 Youtube Direktmasks

Jedenfalls nettes Spielzeug und On the Internet, nobody knows you’re a dog.

This app includes various masks, including dogs, as defaults. You can also make masks yourself. You choose a photo of a face you like, and edit the contour and so on to make a mask.

The app tracks facial feature points, like this. It captures the movements of these feature points, in synch with the motion of your mouth and eyebrows. So it can change how your face looks by synthesizing the mask picture accordingly. A feature of this application is that it tracks in real time, even on a smartphone. We think there aren’t many apps that can track facial feature points using just the processing power of a smartphone. This can track your face even if you vary the angle a lot. It even tracks unusual expressions, so it’s fun to make all sorts of expressions with your mouth. […]

We think Face Stealer could be used to talk easily with your face hidden. For example, a man could join in video chat using a pretty woman’s face. This feature could be used in streaming too, so you could communicate your facial expression on a video broadcast, without having to show your actual face.

Strange Masks made from stitched Rope

Bertjan Pot macht seltsame Masken aus zusammengenähten Seilen: „I wanted to find out if by stitching a rope together I could make a large flat carpet. Instead of flat, the samples got curvy. When I was about to give up on the carpet, Vladi came up with the idea of shaping the rope into masks.“ (via Ignant)

The Plague Mask

When the bubonic plague [Beulenpest] struck Europe during the 17th and 18th centuries, some doctors took to wearing beaked masks while treating patients. At the time, it was believed that the disease was carried by birds. The doctors had masks with birdlike beaks, which they filled with aromatic herbs to filter the bad air. In all likelihood, they also benefitted from the scariness of the masks by keeping infectious people at a distance.

Chinese FacekiniQingdaonese swimmers have recently made waves on Chinese Internet sites for their bizarre swimming gear: colorful, full-face masks. Dubbed “facekini,” the fabric masks cover a swimmer’s entire head and neck down to the collar bones. Holes are cut for eyes, nostrils and mouth.

According to Chinese media, most “facekini women” are retired middle-aged Qingdaonese who swim regularly in the ocean. “[I wear this because] I fear getting tanned,” said Wang Xiuzhi (王秀芝), a “facekini woman” on Qingdao’s No. 1 Bathing Beach, as reported by Xinhua. “I come here to swim often and [the mask] does work,” Wang added. White skin is considered a sign of beauty in China.

Colorful Papercraft Chef Masks

Papercraft Chef Masks

Sehr schicke Arbeiten.

Papercraft Chef MasksThis year marks the 30th birthday of the gastronomic restaurant Au Bon Gîte. The Chief has prepared special bimonthly menus to showcase unique offerings to celebrate throughout the year. Composed in harmony, as the expert layering of flavors, the elements of each mask will reveal the personality of the Chief’s menu.

Chef’s Mask I represents the various ingredients used to cook the first menu: onions, peas, asparagus, rice, ham on the bone, and strawberries. Chef’s Mask II represents […] the second menu : turnips, poultry, morels, crayfish, lemons, oranges, chocolate. Chef’s Mask III[…]: carots, swiss chards, green beans, squab chops, trout filets, gnocchis, bergamots, ice cream…

Pixelated Hans-Peter Friedrich-Masks

The full face mask Pixelhead acts as media camouflage, completely shielding the head to ensure that your face is not recognizable on photographs taken in public places without securing permission. A simple piece of fabric creates a little piece of anonymity for the Internet age. The material used is elastic fabric for beach fashion and sports gear with a fashionable Pixel-style print of German Secretary of the Interior Hans-Peter Friedrich. The mask has holes for your eyes and mouth, so you can see and breathe comfortably while wearing the mask, secure in the knowledge that your image won’t be showing up anywhere you don’t want it to.

Artificial Beauty Masks from Uncanny Valley

Masks which picture the eye- and mouth area correspond to the current ideal of beauty. When put on, however, they cause a contortion of the face. This is meant to show that artificially produced beauty is not always beautiful; instead it can evoke the very opposite. Furthermore the pressure to be beautiful is to be questioned and denounced.
