Meteorite explodes over Russia
Ein Meteorit ist heute morgen über Chelyabinsk (Maps) an der Grenze zu Kasachstan explodiert, Fragmente des Meteors sind in Gebäude eingeschlagen und die Druckwelle hat jede Menge Fensterscheiben zu Bruch gehen lassen. Über 700 Menschen wurden leicht verletzt. Es wird angenommen, dass der Meteorit ein Satellit des bald nur knapp an der Erde vorbeirauschenden Asteroiden 2012 DA14 ist. Von Russia Today:
Army units found three meteorite debris impact sites, two of which are in an area near Chebarkul Lake, west of Chelyabinsk. The third site was found some 80 kilometers further to the northwest, near the town of Zlatoust. One of the fragments that struck near Chebarkul left a crater six meters in diameter. Servicemembers from the tank brigade that found the crater have confirmed that background radiation levels at the site are normal. […]
According to estimates by the Russian Academy of Sciences, the space object weighed about 10 tons before entering Earth’s atmosphere. As of 15:00 Moscow time, 725 people have sought medical attention in Chelyabinsk alone because of the disaster, 112 of whom have been hospitalized. Among the injured there are 84 children, Emergency ministry reported.

[update] Von Scienceblogs: „Natürlich vermuten viele eine Verbindung zu dem Asteroid 2012 DA14, der heute Abend an der Erde vorbei fliegt. Das bezweifle ich eher. Kann natürlich sein, dass der Asteroid irgendwann in der Vergangenheit mal auseinandergebrochen ist und jetzt von kleineren Trümmern begleitet wird. Das im Blogpost ursprünglich verlinkte Video wurde tatsächlich schon innerhalb einer Stunde von einem GEMA-Bot gesperrt, da im Autoradio des Fahrzeugs, aus dem die Aufnahmen gemacht wurden, offenbar GEMA-geschützte Musik lief. Unfassbar – Videoaufzeichnungen eines historischen astronomischen Ereignisses sind innerhalb von Stunden in der ganzen Welt verfügbar – nur in Deutschland müssen wir dank GEMA leider darauf verzichten…
Telegraph: The Science behind Russian meteor strike
In a skype interview with the Telegraph Dr Simon Green from the Open University explains the science behind this rare phenomenon.
“This kind of thing doesn’t happen every year, but it’s certainly something that happens every decade or so.” He said.
“The bright fireball is not the object burning, it’s the ionising gases in the atmosphere.
Meteorite-flavored Space-Wine

The meteorite in question, Hutchinson claims, is roughly three inches in diameter, 4.5 billion years old, and likely hails from the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter. It crashed in Chile’s Atacama Desert some 6,000 year ago. Technically the meteorite belongs to “an American collector,” who didn’t seem to mind having his priceless piece of space rock marinate in a wooden barrel of red wine for 12 months.
That’s how long it took to complete something called “malolactic fermentation”: it’s a process that takes place after the primary fermentation. The first stage of the wine-making process — after harvesting the grapes, that is, which in this case come from Hutchinson’s Tremonte Vineyard southwest of Santiago — converts grape sugar into alcohol via yeast. This takes around 25 days.
The next stage, malolactic fermentation, is achieved by lactic acid bacteria, notably Oenococcus oeni. There are others, of course, but the Aroma Dictionary informs me that this bacteria in particular “typically processes substances that have pleasant and wine sympathetic aromas and flavors.” And those flavors are imparted to the wine as it ages in a wooden barrel.

Terry Pratchett hat sich, nachdem er von der Queen zum Ritter geschlagen wurde, ein Schwert machen lassen und zwar aus Eisenerz, das er selbst gefördert und geschmolzen hatte. Nach eigener Aussage hat er zum Eisenerz noch ein paar Brocken eines Meteoriten geschmissen, damit das Ding noch magischer ist, als ohnehin schon.
With help from his friend Jake Keen — an expert on ancient metal-making techniques — the author dug up 81kg of ore and smelted it in the grounds of his house, using a makeshift kiln built from clay and hay and fuelled with damp sheep manure.
Pratchett, who has Alzheimer’s disease, also said he had thrown in “several pieces of meteorites — thunderbolt iron, you see — highly magical, you’ve got to chuck that stuff in whether you believe in it or not”.
After days of hammering the metal into bars, he took it to a blacksmith, whom he helped to shape it into a blade, which was finished with silverwork.

Am Samstagabend war über Mecklenburg-Vorpommern ein Kometeneinschlag zu beobachten, aus Schweden ist jetzt dieses spektakuläre Video aufgetaucht. Neulich erst hatte ich über einen Meteor in Kanada gebloggt.
Das Centrale Forschungsnetz für außergewöhnliche Himmelsphänomene (CENAP) in Mannheim geht von einem Meteor aus. Der grün-blaue Lichtball sei gegen 20.10 Uhr über Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Schleswig-Holstein, Sachsen-Anhalt, Hamburg, Dänemark und Südschweden beobachtet worden. “Kurz nach dem Durchgang dieses Objektes gab es einen Knall vom Himmel her. Dies bedeutet, dass das Ding aus dem All bis in die Luftschichten herabkam”, sagte CENAP-Sprecher Werner Walter. Unter Umständen könnte auch etwas zu Boden gestürzt sein.

A bright light lit up the sky around 5:30 MT Thursday evening in Western Canada, with people reporting sightings in Alberta and Saskatchewan.
People telephoned the CBC newsrooms in Edmonton and Calgary to talk about what they saw.
“It was a really big flash, lit up the sky, and there was this huge, flaming fireball falling from the sky,” said Rowyn Windsor, 12, who lives on the Canadian Forces base in Cold Lake, Alta., about 350 kilometres northeast of Edmonton.
