Beaker-bot is a animatronic puppet that will “sing” to the sound that I play through him. Meaning, If I hook up an iPod or other music playing device, he will lip-sync his mouth to the music or words. He is also a fully functional puppet with Beaker style head and hand control. He also has a electric button to control his animatronic mouth, and for fans of more classical puppetry, Beaker-bot does have a classic rod to control his mouth as well.

Jane Henson, R.I.P.
Jane Henson, die Witwe von Jim, ist gestern im Alter von 78 Jahren verstorben. Die Dame hat mit ihrem Mann die erste Henson-TV-Show und dort die erste Version von Kermit entwickelt und sie war seine erste Co-Puppenspielerin. Die beiden spielen jetzt irgendwo anders mit Gonzo und Big Bird. R.I.P. Hier die Tribute-Seite der Henson Company.
Ich hatte für heute eigentlich ein Posting mit einem Todes-Referenzen-Supercut in Jim Hensons Fraggles vorgesehen, das verschiebe ich um ein paar Tage, wäre angesichts der Meldung hier äußerst unpassend und pietätlos. Schlaf gut, Jane.

Seit damals haben sie daraus ein Video zum kompletten Track gemacht und man kann prinzipiell niemals genug Beastie Boys/Sesamstraßen-Mashups im Blog haben. ‘Cause you can’t, you won’t and you don’t stop.

Huch, hätte ich fast vergessen: Heute genau vor 30 Jahren strahlte CBS die erste Folge von Jim Hensons „Fraggle Rock“ aus, seiner Nachfolge-Show nach den Muppets. Von Muppetwiki:

Neil Patrick Harris dreams in Puppets
Neil Patrick Harris hat eine neue Webshow im Nerdist-Channel am Start, der Behind-The-Scenes-Trailer ging vor ein paar Tagen rum, jetzt haben sie den ersten Teil online gestellt. Das Ding wird eine insgesamt siebenteilige Webserie mit NPH, seinem Lebenspartner David Burtka und jeder Menge Puppen aus der Henson Company. Ich find’s ehrlich gesagt bislang ein bisschen unkomisch, leider, aber das wird wahrscheinlich noch, der Auftakt der Show ist laut Entertainment Weekly bewusst zahm.
While upcoming episodes promise drag queens, puppet sex, and a surprising amount of nudity — this ain’t a family webseries — the first episode features a simple fear of falling and a vividly illustrative song penned by co-creator and producer Janet Varney.

Ben Folds Five and The Fraggles!

Hier der neue Clip von Ben Folds Five zu „Do It Anyway“ mit, neben Christ „Nerdist“ Hardwick (in dessen YT-Channel das Video Premiere hat, was für sich alleine schon bemerkenswert ist) und Schnucki Anna Kendrick, den fucking Fraggles! Ich liebe die Fraggles und das hier dürfte der Auftakt zu ihrer 30sten Jubiläum sein, das am 10. Januar 2013 begangen wird. Und deshalb ist es mir ein bisschen egal, dass der Song für Ben Folds Five-Verhältnisse eher okayish ist (immerhin haben die 1999 mit „The Unauthorized Biography of Reinhold Messner“ eins der besten Alben der 90er abgeliefert). Das neue Album „The Sound of the Life of the Mind“ erscheint morgen (mit ‘nem Cover vom alten NC-Bekannten Eric Joyner).
Aus irgendeinem Grund war das Video übrigens vor ein paar Minuten noch geogefickt (hier mein Tweet), jetzt läuft es allerdings. Sollte es nochmal gesperrt werden: Ich hab’ hier ‘ne lokale Kopie rumfliegen. Nach dem Klick noch ein Making Of.
The Muppet Institute of Technology that never was, featuring Douglas Adams
Douglas Adams und Jim Henson haben für eine Weile, nachdem sie über die Games zu Labyrinth und Dark Crystal in Kontakt kamen, an einem Muppet-Special über Technologie und Computer gearbeitet: Das Muppet Institute of Technology. Ich würde mir zwei Arme abhacken lassen, um das Teil hier zu sehen.
Jim’s goal was to raise awareness about the potential for personal computer use and dispel fears about their complexity. In a one-hour television special, the familiar Muppets would (according to the pitch material), “spark the public’s interest in computing,” in an entertaining fashion, highlighting all sorts of hardware and software being used in special effects, digital animation, and robotics. Viewers would get a tour of the fictional institute – a series of computer-generated rooms manipulated by the dean, Dr. Bunsen Honeydew, and stumble on various characters taking advantage of computers’ capabilities. Fozzie, for example, would be hard at work in the “Department of Artificial Stupidity,” proving that computers are only as funny as the bears that program them. Hinting at what would come in The Jim Henson Hour, viewers, “…might even see Jim Henson himself using an input device called a ‘Waldo’ to manipulate a digitally-controlled puppet.”
While the show was never produced, the development process gave Jim and Douglas Adams a chance to get to know each other and explore a shared passion. It seems fitting that when production started on the 2005 film of Adams’s classic Hitchhiker’s Guide, Jim Henson’s Creature Shop would create animatronic creatures like the slovenly Vogons, the Babel Fish, and Marvin the robot, perhaps a relative of the robot designed by Michael Frith for the MIT project.

Jerry „The Count“ Nelson R.I.P.
Jerry Nelson, einer der Original-Puppenspieler der Sesamstraße und der Muppet-Show und vor allem bekannt für seinen „Graf Zahl“, ist gestern Nacht im Alter von 78 nach langer Krankheit verstorben. Der Mann ersetzte Anfang der 60er Frank Oz bei den Muppets und war seit dem fester Bestandteil der Henson-Crew. Der Mann war neben Graf Zahl, mit dem er mich für immer und ewig beinflusst hat, unter anderem der Puppenspieler der allwissenden Müllhalde und Gobo Fraggle, er erfand das zweiköpfige Monster, vor Herry hatte ich immer ein bisschen Angst und mit dem zensierten Song of the Count hat er seinen ganz eigenen, waschechten Internet-Klassiker. Nelson ging 2004 in Ruhestand, den Grafen sprach er aber bis zu seinem Tod. Happy Counting, Jerry, wherever you are!

Chance, dumb luck or destiny? Who knows the controlling force that chooses where and how we find our lives manifest? I can only say I have traveled through the breathtaking up and down melody of a lifetime that, I studied and trained for, wandered the paths of least resistance (following my water nature) to, and that I am either blessed and one of the luckiest bozos walking this planet or both.

With the exception of the Count, his characters were never quite as huge as the Kermits or Miss Piggys or Elmos of the world. But Muppet fans know how many terrific and lovable characters he played — Herry Monster, Biff, Floyd, Dr. Strangepork, Gobo Fraggle, Pa Gorg, the Trash Heap — and Jerry was always the perfect guy for any one-shot character, be it a Whatnot, an Anything Muppet, a monster, a Frackle, or a shoddily constructed ventriloquist’s dummy. I imagine anyone who’s ever gone through the process of ascending from casual Muppet fan to major geek has had the experience of realizing just how many hundreds (thousands?) of characters Jerry played, and being amazed by it.

John O’Brien, Kameramann bei ATV, die in den siebzigern die ersten Staffeln der Muppet Show produzierten, hat kurz vor Weihnachten auf Youtube zwei Behind The Scenes-Clips hochgeladen. Das hier ist pures Jim Henson-Muppet-Internet-Gold, nicht weniger. Im ersten Clip macht die Crew ein bisschen Unsinn am letzten Aufzeichnungstag der ersten Staffel:

A little bit of fun by the crew recorded at the end of the first series/season of The Muppet Show in 1976 (I joined ATV in 1977 during Season 2) … I am not sure who was responsible for putting this together (I suspect Peter Harris had an input) but I’m sure someone will tell me.
The cast includes Peter Harris, Richard Holloway, Jim O’Donnell, Brian Grant, Steve Springford, Jerry Hoare, Phil Hawkes, Gerry Elms,John Rook, Martin Baker, Sue Boyers, Francis Essex, Dennis Bassinger, David Chandler, Bryan Holgate, Peter Milic, Claude Walters and the ladies from the Canteen.

A behind the scenes glimpse of the Muppet Show on it’s last day of recording at the Elstree Television Studios in 1980 on which I was privileged to work as a Cameraman.
Featured is Jim Henson and Frank Oz who were the main inspiration and creative forces behind the show. Narrated by Peter Harris, one of the two directors on the show … it mostly reveals crew and cast having a very silly day as everyone said their final farewells. Richard Holloway (now Executive Producer on “The X Factor”) had been the Senior Floor Manager for the duration and it was probably inevitable that he became the victim of the flan flingers … he took it in great spirits.
This last day in Studio D was the culmination of 5 years work, fun and laughter on what was arguably the most successful Children’s Programme in the world at the time, having been sold to some 110 countries … it was the end of an era for many and the Muppets have gone on to become truly iconic.
