Hier der zweite Teil der grandiosen Webserie The Art Of Punk vom Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles über Design und Punk. Nach der ersten Folge über Black Flagg widmen sie sich nun ausführlich dem Logo-Design und den Artworks von Crass, nächste Woche dann die Kennedys (hell yeah!)
On the next installment of The Art of Punk, we tear into the art of Crass. From the assaulting black and white photo-realistic paintings of protest, anarchy, and social satire, to their legendary adopted brand and two headed snake and cross symbol. We head up to the Anarchist Book Fair in San Francisco to meet up with Gee Vaucher, and founding Crass member, writer, and activist, Penny Rimbaud.
We discuss the art and the lifestyle stemming from the infamous Dial House, where they have lived, worked, and crated their own brand of anarchistic beauty, for more than 3 decades. We have a sit down with artist Scott Campbell, at his own New York tattoo shop, and talk about how the art of Crass, and one single t-shirt created a fork in his own road of life. Owen Thornton talks some shit. Finally we hang out with British graphic designer Dave King – the creator of the infamous snake and cross symbol, and discuss post war England, hippies, punk, graphic design, and more, that led him to the creation of the symbol made legend by Crass.

Happy 50th, Jeff Mills!
Jeff Mills wird heute 50 Jahre alt! Der Mann ist der beste DJ der Welt, hat zusammen mit Mad Mike Banks auf Underground Resistance Techno eine intellektuelle Stimme gegeben, die Musikform als Hochkultur etabliert und es als einer der wenigen geschafft, den House-Sound aus Chicago mit dem Techno aus Detroit zu verheiraten.
Und natürlich hat er mich 1993 auf dem Sidefloor auf der Mayday mit drei Plattenspieler komplett in den Wahnsinn getrieben, als er die Platten im Sekundentakt mixte und durch die Gegend schmiss, wo sie sein Assistent dann vom Boden aufsammeln musste. Seitdem hab’ ich den Mann ungefähr tausendmal live gesehen, im Omen hat er Samstag nachts mal ‘ne Platte von Cosmic Baby gespielt. Fand ich ganz erstaunlich. Happy Birthday, Jeff!

Unlocking The Truth sind eine Metalband aus Brooklyn und sind vor ein paar Wochen zum ersten mal mit einer Serie Videos von Straßenmusiker-Gigs auf dem Times Square aufgefallen. Dann gab’s ein ein Interview auf Noisey, einen TV-Auftritt bei Fox’ FX’ Totally Biased (Video oben) und ein Portrait von den AvantGarde Diarys (Video unten, entstand vor dem Beitritt des neuen Bassisten Alec Atkins). Und bevor ich’s vergesse: Die Jungs gehen in die sechste Klasse und sind 12 Jahre alt. \m/
Unlocking the Truth, a metal band composed of twelve year old Malcolm Brickhouse and eleven year old Jarad Dawkins, is playfully arguing about which member can play a faster and more forceful rendition of their self-composed instrumental blast “Physical Therapy.” While Jarad is technically the drummer (he mastered the instrument by the age of two), he is convincingly demonstrating his guitar chops. Being the precoucious, and yet consummate, professionals that they are, the band wants to make sure that in a worst case scenario – say, a member fainting onstage – each could play the other’s instrument flawlessly.
It is not atypical for Unlocking the Truth to practice for up to ten hours on weekends. They are so immersed in their music that they barely notice anything going on around them, including their parents, who usually have to force them to stop practicing when it’s bedtime. While their classmates mostly listen to radio pop or rap, Malcolm and Jarad’s enthusiasm for metal was nurtured while watching generous amounts of WWE professional wrestling.
The Flaming Lips’ Freak Night
Ende letzten Jahren hatte ich den Trailer zum Konzertfilm Freak Night der Flaming Lips gebloggt, den gab es dann 24 Stunden lang als Stream zu sehen und jetzt haben sie ihn komplett bei Vimeo online gestellt. Kleine Warnung: Der Film beginnt mit einem Loch im Bein von Wayne Coyne und Blut und riesigen, flashy Vaginas, aber das kennt man ja von den Lips. Party! Death! Love! Do you realize?
Piano Man at Gezi Park saves the Night
Gestern Nacht hat sich ein junger Mann im Gezi Park mit seinem Piano nahe bei der Riot Police aufgebaut und fing an, in die Tasten zu hauen. Der Mann heisst Davide Martello, befindet sich grade auf einer Tour um die Welt und wollte unbedingt in Istanbul spielen, um die Demonstranten zu unterstützen. „Our freedoms are being restricted. Am Mittwoch hatte Erdoğan also angekündigt, dass die Sache innerhalb von 24 Stunden beendet sein würde. Im Park wurde das als ziemlich unmissverständliche Drohung verstanden. Die übermüdeten und erschöpften Demonstranten bereiteten sich auf den Kampf vor, vielleicht ihren letzten. Die Polizei baut sich wieder vor dem Kulturzentrum und um das Denkmal der Republik auf.
Und dann passierte das Unglaubliche: Auf einmal kam ein Typ, der einen Konzertflügel auf den Platz schob. Eine Gruppe half ihm, das Instrument 20 Meter vor die kriegsbereiten Polizisten zu bewegen. Dann begann der junge Mann, das Klavier zu spielen.
Schnell bildete sich eine Traube Menschen um den mutigen Wahnsinnigen, der auf einmal im Mittelpunkt stand. Der Kreis wurde immer größer, so dass er an mancher Stelle bis zu Polizistenwand herankam. Als sich irgendwann alle Zuhörer nach und nach auf den Boden setzten, waren sie mittlerweile so nah an die nervösen Polizisten herangekommen, dass sie ihnen fast schon auf den Stiefeln saßen. Der Mann spielte „Remember all the people“ und „Bella Ciao“.
Happy Birthday-Lawsuit vs Copyright-Nonsense
Endlich macht da mal jemand ernst mit dem Copyright-Nonsense bezüglich des Songs Happy Birthday to you, dessen Rechte nach über 120 Jahren nach seiner Veröffentlichung angeblich bei Warner liegen sollen, die an diesem parasitär-juristischen Bullshit jährlich rund 2 Millionen Dollar „verdienen“. Die Produzenten haben nun Klage gegen Warner eingereicht, da die wohl die Rechte an dem Original-Song Good Morning to All haben – schlimm genug bei einem 120 Jahre alten Song! –, nicht aber an dem kulturell „wild“ gewachsenen Geburtstagsständchen. Laut den Klägern soll Happy Birthday endlich und vollkommen zurecht öffentliches Gemeingut werden.

Robert Brauneis, a professor at George Washington University Law School, said he searched nationwide for evidence of a copyright for a combination of the melody for “Good Morning to All” with the lyrics for “Happy Birthday to You” for an article published in 2009 but did not find any.

Großartige neue Webvideo-Serie vom Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles über Design und Punk, die erste Folge handelt 20 Minuten lang vom Flyer- und Logo-Design von Black Flag, nächste Woche kommen die Dead Kennedys – Hell Yeah! –, danach eine Folge über Crass. Ich werde mir die selbstverständlich alle hier reinkleben, den Feed vom MOCA-Youtube-Channel habe ich mir grade in den Feedreader gepackt. Die Webserie kommt von Bo Bushnell und Bryan Ray Turcotte, von letzterem stammt auch das Buch Fucked Up + Photocopied: Instant Art Of The Punk Rock Movement.

We start of in Los Angeles talking to two founding members singer Keith Morris, and bass player Chuck Dukowski, about what the scene was like in 1976 – setting the stage for the band’s formation, as well as the bands name, and the creation of the iconic four bars symbol. Raymond Pettibon talks with us from his New York art studio. Back in LA we meet with Flea, from the Red Hot Chili Peppers, about how the art, the music, and that early LA scene impacted his own life and career. To wrap it all up we sit and talk at length, with Henry Rollins, at MOCA Grand Ave in Los Angeles, about all of the above and more. […]
In addition to profiling the artists, the series includes intimate interviews with former band members, notable artists, and celebrities who have been heavily influenced by the art of punk rock including Jello Biafra, Tim Biskup, Scott Campbell, Chuck Dukowski, Flea, Steve Olson, Penny Rimbaud, Henry Rollins, Owen Thornton, and Gee Vaucher.

In my opinion, punk flyers should not be behind glass. All my flyers, thousands of them, sit in stacked piles around my office, all around me. I enjoy having people look through them the way I do—grabbing them from stacks, touching them one at a time. Sometimes you find letters written on the backs of them. I always put my favorite flyer on top of the stack to show it off: Black Flag, Husker Du, Vicious Circle and Double Cross at the Tool & Die on Jan 8th, 1984 is my favorite one right now. It’s sitting one on top of the pile. my way of putting a frame around it I guess.

I work as a Creative Technologist at Shine in Auckland, and we’ve been working with [a Beer Brewery] on an intriguing project – the world’s first playable bottle. Taking inspiration from Thomas Edison’s original phonograph, we’ve managed to inscribe 3 minutes of music, at vinyl quality, on to the surface of a bottle, and play it back.
[The Brewery] has been involved in launching the new album from Ghost Wave, ‘Ages’ with a series of art labels, and the ‘Edison Bottle’ is another element in that campaign – slightly out of left field. The single on the bottle is “Here She Comes”. We launched the project
in front of the Semi Permanent (design conference) audience a couple of weekends back, to a great reception.

DJ BCs Ill Submarine-Video is full of Beastles
Hier das erste Lebenszeichen von DJ BCs Beastles-Projekt seit 7 Jahren, derzeit arbeitet er grade an der Veröffentlichung seines dritten Beastie Boys/Beatles-Mashup-Albums und das hier ist das erste Video daraus. Ich verfolge DJ BCs Facebook-Seite ziemlich genau und die Platte war schon im Presswerk und alles, dürfte also in ein paar Tagen soweit sein. Es wird ein Fest.
