Peanuts-Loveletters by Charles Schulz for Sale
Sothebys versteigert demnächst 44 Liebesbriefe von Charles Schulz, dem Schöpfer der Peanuts, die er damals (verheiratet) an eine 23 Jahre junge Dame geschickt hat. Und den Gedanken eines alternden Comic-Weltstars, der ‘nem jugendlichen Schwarm Liebesbriefcomics schickt, finde ich jetzt auch nur zu 37% gruselig. Von der AP-Meldung:
The late “Peanuts” creator Charles Schulz was once so infatuated with a young woman 23 years his junior he sent her dozens of romantic letters and drawings of his beloved cartoon characters. Many of the themes of that correspondence made it into his daily comic strips at the time. Now those love notes from 1970-1971 are being offered for sale at Sotheby’s in New York by the family of Tracey Claudius, who the auction house says is ill at her home near Philadelphia. It’s estimated the notes will fetch $250,000 to $350,000 at the Dec. 14 auction.
Claudius met the cartoonist on March 16, 1970, while accompanying a friend on an interview assignment. She ostensibly came along as a photographer but afterward admitted in a letter to Schulz that it was a chance for her to meet her idol and thank him “for all the enjoyment Charlie Brown and that `stupid beagle’ provide me.”

The Remains of the Peanutweeter
Vor anderthalb Monaten bloggte ich über den Peanutweeter, ein Tumblelog, das Tweets mit den Peanuts mashte und damit neue, tolle, absurde Webcomics schuf. Natürlich wurde das Ding gestern von der Copyright-Mafia (in Form der Iconix Brand Group, die die Rechte an den Peanuts-Comics besitzen) offline genommen, weil die keine Ahnung hat, wie man mit solchen Dingen umgeht.
Wired: Good Grief! Peanutweeter Gets Taken Down Following DMCA Claim: „Peanutweeter, the hilarious marriage of random funny tweets with Peanuts cartoons, was removed from Tumblr Friday, following an infringement claim made under Digital Millennium Copyright Act. A tweet from the @Peanutweeter account, sent just after noon PDT, claimed that the site had been taken offline following a DMCA claim by Iconix Brand Group, which owns copyrights on the Peanuts characters and comic strip. Wie es anders geht bewies vor ein paar Jahren Jim Davis im Umgang mit Garfield minus Garfield von Dan Walsh, ebenfalls ein zunächst unauthorisierter Comic-Remix, ebenfalls auf Tumblr. Jim Davis bekannte sich gegenüber der New York Times als regelmäßiger Leser des Webcomics: „Jim Davis, the cartoonist who created “Garfield,” calls himself an occasional reader of the site, which he calls “fascinating.” He says he is flattered rather than peeved by the imitation. “Some of them really work, and some of them work better,” Mr. Davis said in a telephone interview.“
Und schließlich gab man ein offizielles Garfield minus Garfield-Buch heraus (Amazon-Partnerlink: Garfield Minus Garfield) , das Webcomic gibt es bis heute. Ganz pragmatisch frage ich mich da einfach nur: Wer hat hier die bessere Business-Entscheidung getroffen? Verfickte Rechteverwalter und ihre Copyright-Anwälte, die ob ihrer Natur Kreativität nicht von benutztem Klopapier unterscheiden können, oder ein Comic-Autor, der sieht, wie ein einziger, kleiner Twist einem Comic eine ganz neue Richtung geben kann, das offiziell absegnet und damit unter Umständen eine ganz neue Leserschaft gewinnt?

„Happiness is a Warm Blanket, Charlie Brown“ wird das erste Comic mit den Peanuts nach dem Tode von Charles M. Schulz, eine Adaption des im März erscheinenden gleichnamigen Direct2DVD-Films, weitere Comics sind geplant, alles unter der Leitung von Schulz’ Sohn Craig. Dessen Papa wollte zwar nie, dass seine Serie fortgesetzt wird, bezog das aber vor allem auf die Zeitungsstrips und das Preview auf Comics Alliance sieht außerdem gut aus. Kann man machen und ich freu mich drauf.

60 Jahre Peanuts
Gestern feierten Charles M. Schulz’ Peanuts ihren 60. Geburtstag und die Gang ist dabei keinen Tag älter geworden! Herzlichen Glückwunsch, Charlie Brown!
Die Peanuts-Strips kann man sich auf Comics.com komplett online durchlesen, hier der allererste Peanuts-Strip, hier der letzte, erschienen einen Tag nach Charles Schultz’ Tod. In den 50 Jahren dazwischen gab’s ne Menge Football, Baseball, Depressionen und noch mehr Liebe. Hier noch ein typischer Charlie Brown, danach ‘ne Handvoll Links.
CNet hat Bilder aus dem Schulz-Museum (und die haben – natürlich! – einen Baum in dem ein Drache hängt): At home with Charlie Brown and the ‘Peanuts’ gang: „The museum features a series of rotating exhibits, including those that celebrate some of the experiments that Schulz tried–and rejected–in his strips, as well as a group of terrific sculptures, and other memorabilia.“
Das Portrait links wurde gestern vom Smithsonian Museum vorgestellt: ‘PEANUTS’ TURNS 60: Smithsonian pays tribute this weekend with portrait unveiling & Family Day: „This morning at the Smithsonian’s National Portrait Gallery, a photograph of Schulz will be unveiled in a private ceremony. The 1986 portrait and an original comic strip will be on view after the ceremony, in the museum’s New Arrivals exhibit.“
Time Magazine hat eine sehr schöne Story: A Brief History of Peanuts
When Alex Davis was two years old, he pointed to a drawing his father had done and exclaimed, “Snoopy.” The problem: his father was Jim Davis, the creator of Garfield, and the picture was of the cat he made famous. Charles Schulz’s black-and-white dog is so beloved, though, that a lasagna-loving cat can’t even compete. Saturday, Oct. 2 marks 60 years since Schulz’s first Peanuts strip hit newspapers. Since then, Snoopy, Charlie Brown and the gang have become the most recognizable cartoon characters in America — and have left an indelible mark on American culture.
Yet leave it to the man behind Charlie Brown to experience disappointment before success. In 1947, Schulz started a cartoon feature called L’il Folks for the St. Paul Pioneer Press. It was a flop, never achieving a permanent spot in the paper. In 1950, he compiled his strips and sold the series to the United Features Syndicate, which changed its name to Peanuts. Schulz originally resisted the name change. “I wanted to keep Li’I Folks,” he told TIME in 1965. “I wanted a strip with dignity and significance. Peanuts made it sound too insignificant.”

Vintage Peanuts-Comics
Crosseyed Cyclops hat Scans alter Peanuts-Comics. Unter ihrem Peanuts-Tag findet man noch mehr alte Comics mit Charlie Brown.
Die Dateien kommen im CBR-Format, für das man entweder einen CBR/CBZ-Reader braucht (für Mac empfehle ich Jomic, auf dem iPad den ComicReaderMobi), man kann die Dateien aber auch einfach umbenennen, aus der Suffix CBR ein RAR machen und die Dateien einfach entpacken, dann liegen alle Seiten als JPGs vor.
