Heute ist wieder internationaler π-Tag und Vi Hart erklärt im Video oben, was die Zahl mit Shakespeare, einer Million Affen und ihrem Hund zu tun hat. Mein Geburtstagsdatum kommt übrigens in allen Schreibweisen in den Nachkommastellen von Pi vor, als 15174 an der 24.572ten, als 15011974 an der 87.368.584ten, als 150174 an der 1.735.539ten und als 1511974 an der 590.696. Stelle. Selber kann man sowas hier nachsuchen.

Tolles Posting auf Futility Closet mit Zitaten aus einem Artikel im Journal of Recreational Mathematics von 1977. Darin hat Underwood Dudley fehlerhafte Berechnungen von Pi aus dem 19. Jahrhundert auf eine Formel gebracht, laut der π langsam aber sicher kleiner wird. Und am 9. August 4646 um 20:55 und 33 Sekunden erreicht π den Wert 1. Damit werden alle Durchmesser gleich ihrem Umfang sein, alle Kreise im Universum werden kollabieren und mit ihnen alle Spheren, für uns natürlich besonders interessant: Erde und Sonne. Das Ende der Welt mit π. Math is Fun!
Various writers throughout the 19th century confidently reported that they’d found the true and exact value of π. Unfortunately, they all gave different answers. In 1977 DePauw University mathematician Underwood Dudley tried to make sense of this by compiling 50 of their pronouncements […]
He concluded that π is decreasing. The best fit is πt = 4.59183 – 0.000773t, where t is the year A.D. — it turns out we passed 3.1415926535 back in 1876 and have been heading downward ever since.
And that means trouble: “When πt is 1, the circumference of a circle will coincide with its diameter,” Dudley writes, “and thus all circles will collapse, as will all spheres (since they have circular cross-sections), in particular the earth and the sun. It will be, in fact, the end of the world, and … it will occur in 4646 A.D., on August 9, at 4 minutes and 27 seconds before 9 p.m.”
There is some good news, though: “Circumferences of circles will be particularly easy to calculate in 2059, when πt = 3.”

Man mag von Google halten, was man will, aber es sind Geeks vor dem Herrn. Auf der Auktion für ein paar Nortal-Patente haben sie mit mathematischen Konstanten, unter anderem mit Pi und der Entfernung der Erde zur Sonne geboten. Von Reuters:
At the auction for Nortel Networks’ wireless patents this week, Google’s bids were mystifying, such as $1,902,160,540 and $2,614,972,128. Math whizzes might recognize these numbers as Brun’s constant and Meissel-Mertens constant, but it puzzled many of the people involved in the auction, according to three people with direct knowledge of the situation on Friday. […]
“It became clear that they were bidding with the distance between the earth and the sun. One was the sum of a famous mathematical constant, and then when it got to $3 billion, they bid pi,” the source said, adding the bid was $3.14159 billion.
“Either they were supremely confident or they were bored.”

Pi auf 2,5 Billionen Stellen berechnet
Hier ein bisschen Matheporno für den Start in den Tag: In Japan haben sie Pi bis auf 2,5 Billionen Stellen berechnet und damit den Rekord von 2002 eingestellt. Der hatte es damals nur auf lächerliche 1,2 Billionen stellen gebracht und hat dafür auch noch 8mal so lange rumgerechnet, pöh.
Led by University of Tsukuba professor Daisuke Takahashi, the research team performed the calculation using a massive parallel processing (MPP) supercomputer called the T2K Tsukuba System, which consists of 640 high-performance computers clustered together to achieve processing speeds of 95 teraflops (95 trillion floating-point operations per second). The supercomputer calculated pi to 2,576,980,370,000 decimal places in 73 hours 36 minutes.
