Martyl Langsdorf, Designer of the Doomsday Clock, R.I.P.
Martyl Langsdorf, die die weltberühmte Apokalypsen-Uhr gestaltet und damit eine eigene Metapher geschaffen hat („5 vor 12“), verstarb vor zwei Wochen im Alter von stolzen 96 Jahren. Das Design entstand für die Juni 1947-Ausgabe des Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists, zwei Jahre nach den Atombombenexplosionen von Hiroshima und Nagasaki. Die Uhr wurde seitdem in „echt“ nachgebaut und die Zeiger wurden bislang 18 mal umgestellt, derzeit steht sie wieder auf „5 vor 12“.
Die Dame war die Ehefrau von Alexander Langsdorf Jr., Mitarbeiter des Manhattan Projects, der mit dem ersten Bit tatsächlich nutzbaren Plutoniums für die Einsatzfähigkeit der ersten Atombombe sorgte – und sich danach gegen den Einsatz der Bombe eingesetzt hatte.
Nachruf bei der Washington Post, der Design Observer hatte vor zwei Jahren anlässlich der „Zeitumstellung“ ein längeres Stück zur Uhr:
Martyl had set the minute hand at seven to midnight on that first cover “simply because it looked good.” Two years later, the Soviet Union tested their own nuclear device and the arms race was officially launched. “We do not advise Americans that doomsday is near and that they can expect atomic bombs to start landing on their heads a month or a year from now,” wrote the Bulletin’s editors. “But we think they have reason to be deeply alarmed and to be prepared for grave decisions.” To emphasize the seriousness of the moment, the Clock was moved forward to three minutes to midnight. The static graphic emblem was thus transformed into a sort of political performance art, and the clock has been moved 18 times since, each time signifying an intensification or moderation of nuclear tensions.
With each change, Martyl’s Clock became more deeply entrenched in the public imagination. The Doomsday Clock has been referenced in songs by Iron Maiden, The Who, and Bright Eyes. As a theme it dominates Alan Moore’s graphic novel Watchmen and Senator Tom Harkin’s treatise Five Minutes to Midnight. Over the years, the non-specific simplicity of the symbol was able to accommodate the new threats of climate change and bioterrorism.
Femen-Activists protest for Amina
Femen-Aktivistinnen haben gestern in ganz Europa gegen die Einweisung der 19jährigen Amina protestiert, die in Tunesien für die radikalfeministische Truppe trommelte.
Earlier today, members of Ukrainian feminist group Femen staged protests across Europe as they called for a “topless jihad.” The demonstrations were in support of a young Tunisian activist named Amina Tyler. Last month, Tyler posted naked images of herself online, with the words “I own my body; it’s not the source of anyone’s honor” written on her bare chest. The head of Tunisia’s “Commission for the Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice,” reportedly called for Tyler to be stoned to death for her putatively obscene actions, lest they lead to an epidemic. Femen Stages a ‘Topless Jihad’

The thing is, many Muslim women are indeed oppressed, just like many non-muslim women around the world. Patriarchy is a global problem, and I will not deny the misogyny in my culture. However, please, do not insult me, my intelligence, my color, my heritage and my body, and please don’t do it because you think you’re ‘saving’ me. There are many Muslim feminists in all Muslim countries, a feminist’s job should be solidarity, amplifying voices of local feminists, not imagining they don’t exist. Femen is simply very euro-centric, racist and colonialist. I haven’t yet seen a black Femen protester, they are racist because they amplify European ideals of beauty; white, skinny, and young. I can’t believe this isn’t more obvious to people.
Personally, Femen, shut the fuck up, and don’t claim that you speak for me, or anybody else. Stop dictating women that they need to be nude to be free, that’s just as bad as men dictating them to be covered.

Der OffshoreLeak ist umfassender als die Cables von Wikileaks, dürfte in den kommenden Wochen für einige Aufregung sorgen, dabei jede Menge dreckiger Wäsche bei Banken und Konzernen ans Licht bringen und bei den Businesskaspern und ihren Bankster-Komplizen für einige Panik sorgen. A cache of 2.5 million files has cracked open the secrets of more than 120,000 offshore companies and trusts, exposing hidden dealings of politicians, con men and the mega-rich the world over. The secret records obtained by the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists lay bare the names behind covert companies and private trusts in the British Virgin Islands, the Cook Islands and other offshore hideaways.
They include American doctors and dentists and middle-class Greek villagers as well as families and associates of long-time despots, Wall Street swindlers, Eastern European and Indonesian billionaires, Russian corporate executives, international arms dealers and a sham-director-fronted company that the European Union has labeled as a cog in Iran’s nuclear-development program.
The leaked files provide facts and figures — cash transfers, incorporation dates, links between companies and individuals — that illustrate how offshore financial secrecy has spread aggressively around the globe, allowing the wealthy and the well-connected to dodge taxes and fueling corruption and economic woes in rich and poor nations alike.

Molly Crabapples Shell Game
Die gute Frau Molly Crabapple hatte sich vor fast genau einem Jahr eine Serie von Gemälden samt Ausstellung um Finanzkrise, Bankster und korrupte Exceltabellenpolitiker namens „Shell Game“ per Kickstarter finanzieren lassen. Die Arbeiten sind jetzt fertig, die Ausstellung wird ab Mitte April in New York gezeigt und Frau Crabapple hat einen großen Teil der Bilder online gestellt.
Shell Game is comprised of nine, 6′x4′ paintings and one 3’x3’ painting about the revolutions and crises of 2011 (six of which have already been sold to collectors) including the mortgage bubble, the Greek anti-austerity protests, and Occupy Wall Street, filtered them through the artist’s distinctive lens of surrealism, satire, and symbolic animals and, for eight of nine paintings, informed by travel to the settings, including Spain, Greece, and the United Kingdom, during which she interviewed activists for her reported illustrated journalism pieces and participated in demonstrations. For Tunisia, she interviewed members of Nawaat, the dissident blogger collective, via Skype. Nine preliminary watercolors, all sold, will also be exhibited. Molly Crabapple will host a public opening reception on Sunday, April 14, from 7-10pm.
“It was the year when everyone sat down in the main squares of their cities and said the old machine is broken,” observes Crabapple. “2011 freed me to do the best work of my career, and it was amazing to see my protest art wheat-pasted on walls and carried by activists around the world.”

Zum Jahrestag von Pussy Riots Punk Prayer in der Chirst-Erlöser-Kirche in Moskau, was zur Verhaftung der feministischen Punk-Aktivistinnen führte, schickt ein Berliner Unterwäsche-Label eins seiner Models mit Balaclava in Moskau halbnackt bei –15°C auf die Straße. Ich bin mir nicht sicher, ob tatsächlicher Protest als Werbeform neu ist, ob der Protest wirklich legitim ist, obwohl die Fashionindustrie sich bereits während der Prozesse für die Damen einsetzte und wie Sexy-Unterwäsche-Protest für die Freilassung durchaus radikaler Feministinnen passen soll. Was das Ding ja wegen all dieser Fragen durchaus interessant macht.

This is no Femen action, in which women’s bodies become weapons of protest. It is a commercial for sexy underwear that pays for its appropriation of a radical feminist cause by directing people to that cause. Is this irony?

Femen-Activist deported in Tunesia
In Tunesien hat man eine dortige Femen-Aktivistin in eine psychiatrische Anstalt eingewiesen, nachdem ein religiöser Fundi mit Wahnvorstellungen aka „salafistischer Priester“ die Dame nach der Scharia mit 100 Peitschenhieben und/oder dem Tode bestrafen will. Die Frau hatte auf Facebook ein Foto von sich gepostet, Kippe rauchend, blank gezogen und mit dem Spruch auf dem Oberkörper: „My Body is My Own and Not the Source of Anyone’s Honor“. Eine Petition auf Change.org habe ich grade unterzeichnet, you should, too.
Amina, a 19-year-old Tunisian aspirant to the radical, Ukraine-born feminist group Femen has been delivered by her parents to a psychiatric hospital in Tunis, according to reports received by Femen leader Inna Shevchenko in Paris. Amina (her last name is unknown) had posted topless photos of herself on the Femen web page she created for the group in Tunisia several weeks ago. One photo shows her topless, smoking a cigarette, with “My Body is My Own and Not the Source of Anyone’s Honor” scrawled in Arabic across her chest. Another shows her raising her middle fingers to the camera, with “Fuck Your Morals,” written on her torso. The site was subsequently hacked and temporarily plastered with citations from the Quran.
The head of the Commission for the Promotion of Virtue and the Prevention of Vice in Tunisia, Almi Adel, a Salafi Islamic preacher, has called for Amina to be “stoned to death” for posting the images. He warned that Amina’s action could cause “epidemics and disasters” and “could be contagious and give ideas to other women.” Media reports say Tunisian secular law would punish her with up to two years in prison.

Der Bundesrat hat heute das Leistungsschutzrecht durchgewunken, das Geschacher der alten Parteien und Lobbyisten interessiert mich nicht, es ist dasselbe Geschacher wie immer, mit Handschlag abgemacht in verrauchten Konferenzräumen. Es sind Leute aus der alten Welt mit ihren alten Regeln, die schon seit ein paar Jahren nicht mehr gelten. Thomas verabschiedet sich vom Technologiestandort Deutschland und trägt die unfassbar technologie-, zukunfts- und Verbraucherfeindlichen Beschlüsse der letzten Tage und Wochen nochmal zusammen.

Links auf deutsche Medien halten sich hier – diplomatisch formuliert – sehr in Grenzen. Ich brauche die deutschen Medien aus den großen Verlagen nicht. Die Blogs aus meinem Feedreader schlagen sämtliche Holzmedien in allen für mich interessanten Bereichen, die Berichterstattung von Fefe während Zyperns Bankenkrise war schneller, treffender und genauer als alles andere.
Ich lese Reuters im Reader, wozu brauche ich da den Schrott etwa aus dem Verlagshaus Burda, deren Boss mit dem Steuerparadies Panama verstrickt ist und der gleichzeitig hier das LSR lobbyiert, für seine auf totes Holz gedruckten Überflüssigkeiten (Frau im Trend, Tomorrow, Cinema)? Ich lese seit urzeiten keine BILD-Zeitung, das Drecksblatt spielt in meinem Universum keine Rolle und die paar Medien aus dem Springer-Haus, die ich mal gelesen habe (Musik-Express, Rolling Stone) wurden vollständig von Pitchfork oder Brooklyn Vegan ersetzt.
Die Verabschiedung des Leistungsschutzrecht lässt mich nur müde lächeln. Ich brauche Euren Müll nicht und dieses Gesetz wird Euren Untergang nicht aufhalten.
