Iggy Pops 2012 Tour-Rider: Dead Dog Island and the Seven Dwarfs
Vor ein paar Jahren ging Iggy Pops 18seitiger Tour-Rider durchs Netz, jetzt hat Smoking Gun den zur 2012er Tour online gestellt. Inklusive Ron Howard-Punches, den Sieben Zwergen und einer Reality-TV-Show auf einer tropischen Insel mit toten Hunden.
The 65-year-old performer’s current tour rider–again authored by stage manager Jos Grain–is stocked with risqué jokes, ribald observations, and oddball riffs. While Grain has reprised some material, the 28-page rider provides many new laughs. Such as:
* “Apparently Iggy met that Ron Howard once,” Grain noted in a section about the band’s stage plan. “You know, the ugly, baldy one out of Happy Days. Directs films. Got one of those faces you’d never get tired of punching.”
* In addition to the longstanding demand for the provision of a Bob Hope impersonator, Iggy & Co. ask promoters for “Seven dwarves, dressed up as those dwarves out of that marvelous Walt Disney film about the woman who goes to sleep for a hundred years after biting a poisoned dwarf, or maybe pricking her finger on a rather sharp apple… or something.” In a pinch, “Taller people are acceptable, of course. It’s attitude, more than altitude that’s important here,” Grain notes, adding, “Don’t forget the pointy hats!”

[update] Pussy Riot sind zu zwei Jahren im Knast verurteilt worden wegen „1. Gotteslästerung, 2. Störung der öffentlichen Ordnung, 3. Extremismus (Feminismus), 4. Staatsfeindlichkeit (Putin), 5. Spionage.“, außerdem wurden bei ihnen Geistesstörungen wegen „overconfidence, stubborness, confrontational opinions“ festgestellt. Eine Bewährungsstrafe kam angeblich nicht in Frage, weil die Haftstrafe anderen als Warnung dienen soll. Eine Farce! Die Verteidigung kündigte bereits Revision durch alle Instanzen an.

Global Free Pussy Riot Day
Heute ist globaler Free Pussy Riot Day. Weltweit treffen sich Unterstützer und Sympathisanten der russischen Fem-Punks, um gegen das Urteil, das heute um 11:30 Uhr verkündet wird. Hier alle Links zu den Facebook-Seiten aller Aktionen (Berlin, Hamburg, Köln, Frankfurt, München, Wien), die neusten Meldungen wird es wohl auf dem Twitterfeed von @FreePussyRiot geben.
Vor dem Gerichtsgebäude laufen eine ganze Menge Bullen auf und die Richterin im Verfahren musste unter Polizeischutz gestellt werden, erste Demonstranten wurden gestern Nacht bereits festgenommen. Die Financial Times hat ‘nen schönen Kommentar zum gesamten Thema und attestiert Putin ein Punk Trauma, Snip vom Guardian:
The trial comes amid a wider political crackdown on the opposition movement borne of fears over Putin’s return to power. A series of laws targeting demonstrations, non-governmental organisations and the internet were adopted this summer, and charges have recently been brought against opposition leader Alexey Navalny.
The opposition have called for supporters to don balaclavas, part of Pussy Riot’s signature look, at a protest at the court on Friday. Another protest is planned for Sunday.
“Something unbelievable is happening for modern Russian politics: the demanding, stubborn, authoritative and consistent impact of society on the authorities,” Tolokonnikova wrote. “I’m grateful to everyone who has said: Freedom for Pussy Riot! We are witnessing a big and important political event, and the Putinist system is having a harder time controlling it.”

Vorgestern hat der Anwalt der inhaftierten Mitglieder der russischen, feministischen Kunst-Punk-Truppe Pussy Riot sein Abschlussplädoyer gehalten, Chtodelat News hat eine Übersetzung davon. Es geht vor allem um die Rolle der Kirche im politischen Gefüge Russlands: Yekaterina Samutsevich: Closing Statement at the Pussy Riot Trial (via Gawker).
Perhaps such an unpleasant large-scale effect from our media intrusion into the cathedral was a surprise to the authorities themselves. First they tried to present our performance as the prank of heartless militant atheists. But they made a huge blunder, since by this time we were already known as an anti-Putin feminist punk band that carried out their media raids on the country’s major political symbols.

The message of their balaclavas is that it doesn’t matter which of them got arrested — they’re not individuals, they’re an Idea. And this is why they are such a threat: it is easy to imprison individuals, but try to imprison an Idea!
The panic of those in power — displayed by their ridiculously excessive brutal reaction — is thus fully justified. The more brutally they act, the more important symbol Pussy Riot will become. Already now the result of the oppressive measures is that Pussy Riot are a household name literally all around the world.

Vor ein paar Wochen hatte ich einen spOn-Artikel von Alexander Dluzak verlinkt, der über die kleine Punk-Szene in Burma geschrieben hatte. Damals drehte er zusammen mit Carsten “Peewee” Piefke grade die Doku „Yangon Calling – Punk in Myanmar“ und die steht noch für ein paar Tage in der ZDF Mediathek. Unbedingt anschauen, der Film (hier die Facebook-Seite… alleine die „sinister drawings by SCUM“ wären mir ein eigenes Posting wert…) ist extrem interessant und wird noch dazu von Bela B. erzählt. Außerdem hat mir Alexander eine ganze Reihe High-Res-Bilder geschickt, geschossen von ihm und Matt Grace; ich hab’ die mal auf 1280px runtergerechnet. Danke, Alex und Peewee! Ganz großartige Arbeit!

Knapp sechs Wochen haben wir undercover in Myanmar gedreht. In einem Land, das ausländische Journalisten für gewöhnlich mit einem kräftigen Tritt in den Hintern zurück nach Bangkok befördert. Von den burmesischen Kollegen ganz zu schweigen. Es war manchmal etwas gruselig, ist aber alles gut gegangen. Es ist ein ausgesprochen angenehmes Gefühl, wenn das Flugzeug vom Boden einer Diktatur abhebt und im Rucksack zwischen schmutzigen Socken haufenweise Tapes und Speicherkarten liegen.
Gerade hat es den Anschein, als ob sich die Lage in Myanmar entspannt, hoffen wir, dass es keine politischen Tricks sind und die Generäle irgendwann mit Karadzic in Den Haag sitzen. Glaub ich aber nicht und die burmesischen Punks am allerwenigsten. Abgesehen davon wüssten sie die Generäle vermutlich auch lieber mit Gaddafi in der Hölle schmoren.

Interview with Pussy Riot
Heute beginnt der Prozess gegen Pussy Riot, den drei Damen die als Teil eines russischen Punk-Kunst-Kollektivs in der Erlöser-Kathedrale in Moskau ein „Punk-Gebet“ aufführten, um gegen Putin zu protestieren. Der Prozess soll ab 10:30 Moskauer Zeit (so ungefähr jetzt um 8:30 bei uns) live ins Netz gestreamt werden, Links findet man auf FreePussyRiot.org, hier soll’s angeblich einen Videostream geben, ich sehe allerdings keinen, hier noch die Facebook-Seite von Free Pussy Riot und hier das Blog auf Livejournal.
Artikel gibt’s mittlerweile in so ziemlich allen westlichen Massenmedien, hier mal exemplarisch der Artikel auf spOnline und ein kurzes Interview mit dem Anwalt der Damen bei der Süddeutschen. Den besten Artikel hat allerdings der Guardian, der gestern mit einigen der noch flüchtigen Mitglieder von Pussy Riot ein Interview führte und in dem sie auch erklären, warum sie explizit diese, wichtigste Kirche Russlands ausgewählt haben:
What’s not in dispute is that Pussy Riot did cause offence. But that was the point. “The church of Christ the Saviour was chosen for very specific, symbolic reasons,” says Verzilov. “It was blown up by Stalin to show his power against the church and in the 60s was turned into a swimming pool.” And then the Soviet Union collapsed. “And Moscow’s first post-Soviet mayor, Luzhkov, decided to rebuild the cathedral. At that time, in the early 90s, the most successful commercial enterprise in the country was organised crime, and he said I need $1bn and whoever doesn’t pay is going to jail. “It became a very important governmental symbol. And it’s supposed to be the most sacred place in Russia. But it’s very commercialised: there’s a massive parking garage under it, and banqueting halls you can hire out for $10,000 a day.

Never Mind The Bollocks 35th Anniversary Box Set
Am 24. September erscheint zum 35sten Jubiläum des Albums ein Box Set zur wahrscheinlich wichtigsten Platte des Punk: Never Mind The Bollocks, Here’s the Sex Pistols (hier komplett auf Youtube). Drei CDs und eine DVD mit allen möglichen Raritäten und überhaupt. Now I got a Reason to be waitin’.
The original master tapes from the ‘Never Mind The Bollocks, Here’s The Sex Pistols’ recording sessions in 1977 were thought to be lost for many years. Now thankfully rediscovered during the recent move from Virgin Records to Universal Music Catalogue in January 2012 the tapes have been remastered, for the very first time, by Tim Young under direction from original producer Chris Thomas. Some real treats have also been found along the way. The find that will perhaps excite fans the most is the lost 1977 demo studio recording of ‘Belsen Was A Gas’, the only original Sex Pistols composition of the era thought not to be recorded.
Other treats include the inclusion of six demos first included on the infamous ‘Spunk’ bootleg album, released for the very first time in their original, untouched form following the very recent discovery of their original master tapes. These, combined with a selection of unreleased Chris Thomas demo’s and outtakes from the recording of the album – including tracks with Sid Vicious on bass- plus a wealth of live audio and visual material all from 1977 make up a box set that will truly satisfy fans of the band.

Pussy Riot sind ‘ne feministische Punk Band und Seitenarm der russischen Anarchie-Kunst-Gang Viona. Der der Damen wurden im März verhaftet, nachdem sie einen Anti-Putin-Song in einer Kirche aufführten und könnten für nen Song sieben Jahre im Knast landen. Three young women are being detained by Russian authorities for allegedly performing a protest song in a cathedral as part of a feminist punk group “Pussy Riot”.
Nadezhda Tolokonnikova, Maria Alekhina and Ekaterina Samutsevich were arrested in March 2012 and charged with “hooliganism”. If found guilty, they could be jailed for up to 7 years.
The three women deny any involvement in the protest although even if they took part, the severity of the response of the Russian authorities would not be a justifiable response to the peaceful – if, to many, offensive – expression of their political beliefs.

Meistens bin ich mit dem Umstand, dass ich mich nur sehr schleierhaft an die 90er erinnern kann, recht zufrieden. Gerade auch, wenn ich Zeitdokumente wie jene hier sehe, in dem mir zwei miese Perücken erklären möchten, was total Punk ist… Man! Ich meine, okay, Musik entwickelt sich ja auch und alles ist ja auch irgendwie Auslegungssache, aber The Knack, Erasure und vor allem Culture Club als Punk zu bezeichnen – das funktioniert in keiner Ära. Und wo wir grade bei alten Büchern sind: Das Blog recto|verso des Antiquariats F.A. Bernett Books (via MeFi) sammelt sammelt obskure Magazine und Bücher, unter anderem gibt’s dort Scans von Anarchy. A Journal of Anarchist Ideas. und Damage: An Inventory, “the magazine that’s not for everybody.” Letztere haben 1980 ‘ne größere Rolle im Wohlkampf von Jello Biafra gespielt, der sich damals als Kandidat für den Bürgermeisterposten von San Francisco aufstellen ließ.
Notably, during the 1980 election cycle in San Francisco, Jello Biafra (lead singer of the Dead Kennedys) registered as a candidate and actively ran for Mayor of San Francisco. Lapin, Coyote, and staff writer Tony Rocco took part in the effort to promote his candidacy as a popular media spectacle and satire of corrupt local politics.
