Zum Jahrestag von Pussy Riots Punk Prayer in der Chirst-Erlöser-Kirche in Moskau, was zur Verhaftung der feministischen Punk-Aktivistinnen führte, schickt ein Berliner Unterwäsche-Label eins seiner Models mit Balaclava in Moskau halbnackt bei –15°C auf die Straße. Ich bin mir nicht sicher, ob tatsächlicher Protest als Werbeform neu ist, ob der Protest wirklich legitim ist, obwohl die Fashionindustrie sich bereits während der Prozesse für die Damen einsetzte und wie Sexy-Unterwäsche-Protest für die Freilassung durchaus radikaler Feministinnen passen soll. Was das Ding ja wegen all dieser Fragen durchaus interessant macht.
While it legitimately promotes the freepussyriot.org fundraising site to help the women, it is also promoting a product using a woman’s sexuality as the bait: „On the first anniversary of the Pussy Riot concert in the Cathedral of Christ the Savior, the Berlin based Lingerie label blush supports the free pussy riot movement with a sexy protest march through icy Moscow (-15° C). Support Freepussyriot.org!“
This is no Femen action, in which women’s bodies become weapons of protest. It is a commercial for sexy underwear that pays for its appropriation of a radical feminist cause by directing people to that cause. Is this irony?

GQ: What is your average day like now? How do you get the news from the outside?
Masha: They have small, medium, and large cells here. We’re in three different small ones. Only the large cells have in-room showers; we get showers once a week. After 6 a.m., you’re not allowed to sleep under a blanket. Theoretically, until lights-out at 10 p.m., you’re not allowed to sleep at all, but in practice you can lie on top of the blanket and cover yourself with your coat. Nobody can explain why; the only answer you hear to any question is “That’s the rule” and “We keep to a regimen here.” Every day there’s an hour-long walk in a “yard,” which is a concrete box with two benches and a sliver of sky between a cement wall and a plastic roof. It’s all “Hug the wall” this and “Hands behind your back” that. They search our cells regularly and confiscate our drawings and notes. Why? “The rules.” Pretty much the only news we get is from federal TV channels. Only now do I realize the sheer amount of lies and censorship there. When you have the Internet, you don’t feel it as sharply. But once a week our lawyers bring us different news, words of support, and that helps a lot.

Michael Idov hat beim Guardian einen großartigen Kommentar auf den Prozess gegen Pussy Riot geschrieben und warum er die Damen im Kontext ihrer Heimat Russland für großartige Künstler hält. Ich hatte ähnliche Gedanken im Zusammenhang mit Voina, an deren Performances ein paar der Mitglieder teilgenommen hatten, mal so formuliert: „der künstlerische Wert [Voinas] Aktionen ergeben sich für mich sicher nicht aus den ‘schönen Bildern’, sondern aus der Schnittmenge aus lokalem Aktivismus, gezielt eingesetzter Anarchie und ‘Terrorismus’, dem direkten Feedback und Bezug zum lokalen System, in dem sie leben, und eben Kunst. Mit einem Wort: Großartig!“
Pussy Riots Verurteilung zu zwei Jahren Straflager bildet hier einen Endpunkt unter ein Gesamtkunstwerk, das mit einer Punk-Performance in einer symbolträchtigen Kirche begann und letztlich die komplett reaktionäre und konservative Haltung eines großen Teils der russischen Gesellschaft entblöste. Systemrelevante, politische Kunst, die trotzdem unverschämt gut aussieht und diese umgesetzt mit mehr Eiern, als sie ein Putin jemals haben wird. Dass die Urteilverkündung zeitlich mit dem russischen Verbot von LGBT-Paraden für einhundert Jahre zusammenfällt, ist sicherlich Zufall, gibt diesem Gesamtkunstwerk aber noch einen fantastisch passenden, regenbogenfarbenen Klecks mit. Hack the System – und zwar ein System, das einen Hack echt nötig hat! – with Punk-Art und ihre Baclaclavas wären in einer besseren Welt die neuen Masken von Anonymous. Vor Pussy Riot kann man nicht erst seit gestern einfach nur den Hut ziehen.
The only professionals anywhere in sight are Pussy Riot themselves. From their name, perfectly pitched to both shock and attract the western media, to their instantly recognisable look; from their message (concise bursts of feminist agitprop with just enough of a tune to pass as a song), to their method of distributing this message via social networks; from their initial punk posturing in interviews, to their pointedly academic statements to the court, which no less than David Remnick called “a kind of instant classic in the anthology of dissidence”; these women, and they alone in this mess, know exactly what they are doing.
Minutes after the verdict, the band released a new single, Putin Lights Up the Fires, exclusively through the Guardian. It is notably more melodic than their previous work.
In fact, such PR precision may even open up a slightly icky discussion of whether, in the meta-artwork that is Pussy Riot’s story, imprisonment is an integral part. (The collective were once temporarily excommunicated from their parent art group, Voina, for allegedly planning the arrest of a group’s member as a way of amplifying the message).
But now is not the time for that discussion. Nuance can come later. When you trim away everything else, three young women will spend two years in jail for dancing in a church.
And the depths of vengeful backwardness that their case has teased out of the Russian soil have helped make a dubious art project into a great one: one capable of changing the society that tried to stifle it.

Die Urteilsverkündung, in der Pussy Riot heute zu zwei Jahren Knast verurteilt wurden, dauerte ungefähr drei Stunden, in denen die Richterin das komplette Verfahren aufrollte und alle Zeugenaussagen in einem monoton vorgetragenen Monolog vortrug. Your’s truly wären dabei fast die Augen zugefallen und die Anwesenden im Gerichtssaal sind wohl stellenweise tatsächlich eingenickt, zumindest sieht es so auf ein paar der Screenshots aus, die ich während der Verhandlung gemacht habe. [update] Pussy Riot sind zu zwei Jahren im Knast verurteilt worden wegen „1. Gotteslästerung, 2. Störung der öffentlichen Ordnung, 3. Extremismus (Feminismus), 4. Staatsfeindlichkeit (Putin), 5. Spionage.“, außerdem wurden bei ihnen Geistesstörungen wegen „overconfidence, stubborness, confrontational opinions“ festgestellt. Eine Bewährungsstrafe kam angeblich nicht in Frage, weil die Haftstrafe anderen als Warnung dienen soll. Eine Farce! Die Verteidigung kündigte bereits Revision durch alle Instanzen an.

Heute ist globaler Free Pussy Riot Day. Weltweit treffen sich Unterstützer und Sympathisanten der russischen Fem-Punks, um gegen das Urteil, das heute um 11:30 Uhr verkündet wird. Hier alle Links zu den Facebook-Seiten aller Aktionen (Berlin, Hamburg, Köln, Frankfurt, München, Wien), die neusten Meldungen wird es wohl auf dem Twitterfeed von @FreePussyRiot geben.
Vor dem Gerichtsgebäude laufen eine ganze Menge Bullen auf und die Richterin im Verfahren musste unter Polizeischutz gestellt werden, erste Demonstranten wurden gestern Nacht bereits festgenommen. Die Financial Times hat ‘nen schönen Kommentar zum gesamten Thema und attestiert Putin ein Punk Trauma, Snip vom Guardian:
The trial comes amid a wider political crackdown on the opposition movement borne of fears over Putin’s return to power. A series of laws targeting demonstrations, non-governmental organisations and the internet were adopted this summer, and charges have recently been brought against opposition leader Alexey Navalny.
The opposition have called for supporters to don balaclavas, part of Pussy Riot’s signature look, at a protest at the court on Friday. Another protest is planned for Sunday.
“Something unbelievable is happening for modern Russian politics: the demanding, stubborn, authoritative and consistent impact of society on the authorities,” Tolokonnikova wrote. “I’m grateful to everyone who has said: Freedom for Pussy Riot! We are witnessing a big and important political event, and the Putinist system is having a harder time controlling it.”

Vorgestern hat der Anwalt der inhaftierten Mitglieder der russischen, feministischen Kunst-Punk-Truppe Pussy Riot sein Abschlussplädoyer gehalten, Chtodelat News hat eine Übersetzung davon. Es geht vor allem um die Rolle der Kirche im politischen Gefüge Russlands: Yekaterina Samutsevich: Closing Statement at the Pussy Riot Trial (via Gawker).
Perhaps such an unpleasant large-scale effect from our media intrusion into the cathedral was a surprise to the authorities themselves. First they tried to present our performance as the prank of heartless militant atheists. But they made a huge blunder, since by this time we were already known as an anti-Putin feminist punk band that carried out their media raids on the country’s major political symbols.

If we understand cynicism as ruthless pragmatism of power which secretly laughs at its own principles, then Pussy Riot are anti-cynicism embodied. Their message is: IDEAS MATTER. They are conceptual artists in the noblest sense of the word: artists who embody an Idea. This is why they wear balaclavas: masks of de-individualization, of liberating anonymity. The message of their balaclavas is that it doesn’t matter which of them got arrested — they’re not individuals, they’re an Idea. And this is why they are such a threat: it is easy to imprison individuals, but try to imprison an Idea!
The panic of those in power — displayed by their ridiculously excessive brutal reaction — is thus fully justified. The more brutally they act, the more important symbol Pussy Riot will become. Already now the result of the oppressive measures is that Pussy Riot are a household name literally all around the world.

Heute beginnt der Prozess gegen Pussy Riot, den drei Damen die als Teil eines russischen Punk-Kunst-Kollektivs in der Erlöser-Kathedrale in Moskau ein „Punk-Gebet“ aufführten, um gegen Putin zu protestieren. Der Prozess soll ab 10:30 Moskauer Zeit (so ungefähr jetzt um 8:30 bei uns) live ins Netz gestreamt werden, Links findet man auf FreePussyRiot.org, hier soll’s angeblich einen Videostream geben, ich sehe allerdings keinen, hier noch die Facebook-Seite von Free Pussy Riot und hier das Blog auf Livejournal.
Artikel gibt’s mittlerweile in so ziemlich allen westlichen Massenmedien, hier mal exemplarisch der Artikel auf spOnline und ein kurzes Interview mit dem Anwalt der Damen bei der Süddeutschen. Den besten Artikel hat allerdings der Guardian, der gestern mit einigen der noch flüchtigen Mitglieder von Pussy Riot ein Interview führte und in dem sie auch erklären, warum sie explizit diese, wichtigste Kirche Russlands ausgewählt haben:
What’s not in dispute is that Pussy Riot did cause offence. But that was the point. “The church of Christ the Saviour was chosen for very specific, symbolic reasons,” says Verzilov. “It was blown up by Stalin to show his power against the church and in the 60s was turned into a swimming pool.” And then the Soviet Union collapsed. “And Moscow’s first post-Soviet mayor, Luzhkov, decided to rebuild the cathedral. At that time, in the early 90s, the most successful commercial enterprise in the country was organised crime, and he said I need $1bn and whoever doesn’t pay is going to jail. “It became a very important governmental symbol. And it’s supposed to be the most sacred place in Russia. But it’s very commercialised: there’s a massive parking garage under it, and banqueting halls you can hire out for $10,000 a day.

How Faith No More and Pussy Riot may have fucked up my Server
Halten wir mal fest: Nerdcore war zwei Tage lang nicht erreichbar, erste größere Downtime war am Wochenende. Ich ging zunächst von „normalen“ Serverausfällen aus, der Hoster teilte dann aber schnell mit: Es handelte sich um eine DDoS-Attacke, während der Hacker ein Botnet auf gekaperten Rechnern einrichten und damit Angriffe auf eine Website oder einen Server durchführen. Ich wunderte mich, weil ich so eher Anon-Sympathisant bin und tat das ganze als ‘nen Spöki von ein paar Script-Kiddies ab.
Am nächsten Tag (Dienstag) kam ‘ne Mail vom Hoster mit einem Kurzen Auszug aus den Logs: Die IPs stammten alle aus dem Irak und die Zugriffe erfolgten genau auf einen einzigen Artikel* über die russische Anti-Putin Punkband Pussy Riot aus dem Voina-Umfeld, die in einer Kirche einen Anti-Putin-Song performt hatten. Da wurde ich hellhörig. Mitglieder der Band Pussy Riot befinden sich derzeit in Haft und gleich die erste Google-Suche nach „Pussy Riot DDoS“ ergab, dass die Seite Freepussyriot.org seit Ende Juni unter DDoS-Attacken litt und nicht erreichbar war. Oha!
Am 2. Juli, genau an dem Tag, an dem die Angriffe auf meinen Server begannen, spielten Faith No More in Moskau. Auf der Bühne trat Mike Patton in Pussy Riot-Shirts und mit einer ihrer selbstgehäkelten Masken auf:

Big-name US rockers touring in Moscow have lent their support to the feminist punk band Pussy Riot – who became notorious after allegedly singing an anti-Putin song in Moscow’s main cathedral. The concert by Faith No More in Moscow’s Stadium Live club saw some members of Pussy Riot appear on stage after the headline act returned for an encore. The girls wore their trademark masks and performed an anti-Putin song. They also called for everyone to come and support three of their band mates who were arrested over their protest act.
Three Pussy Riot members – Maria Alehina, Ekaterina Samutsevich and Nadezhda Tolokonnikova – have already spent over three months in jail on charges of hooliganism after they allegedly participated in the infamous performance at Moscow’s main cathedral in February.
Am 4. Juli war eine Gerichtsanhörung, in der das Gericht die Vorbereitungszeit der Verteidigung Pussy Riots auf eine Woche begrenzte. Nadezhda Tolokonnikova befindet sich seit dem im Hungerstreik. Seit dem 27. Juni sammelt man in einer Petition Unterschriften für die Freilassung von Pussy Riot, zusammengekommen sind bislang 33.000 Unterschriften, darunter (jetzt) fast 200 bekannten Künstlern und Kreativen aus Russland.
Und genau zu dieser Zeit attackiert jemand meinen Server gezielt auf einen Pussy Riot-Artikel. Make of this what you will.
