Ende der 80er nannten sich Radiohead noch On A Friday und bis Creep und Pablo Honey war’s noch ein weiter Weg. Auf dem Bild ist Jonny Greenwood noch nicht dabei, die Aufnahme müsste also so ungefähr zwischen 85 und 87 entstanden sein, von links nach recht: Thom Yorke, Phil Selway, Ed O’Brien, Colin Greenwood. Das Foto kam bei Recherchen zum Film Anyone Can Play Guitar ans Licht.

Insas GIF-ITTIs gehen regelmäßig durchs Netz, jetzt hat sie oder er Stanley Donwoods (der Mann, der die Radiohead-Artworks malt) Cover für das neue Album von Thom Yorkes Band Atoms for Peace auf das Büro von XL Records in Los Angeles gepinselt und daraus ein animiertes GIF gemacht.
Longtime Radiohead and Thom Yorke collaborator, Donwood, created the artwork for the Atoms For Peace album, a scene of armageddon in modern Los Angeles. This was interpreted by INSA as a piece of his patented GIF-ITI. Vor zwei Jahren machten eine Bande Radioheadfans aus hunderten Handycam-Videoschnipseln und der Original-Soundspur (zur Verfügung gestellt von der Band selbst) einen Konzertfilm inklusive DVDs für ‘ne Haiti-Spendenaktion. Um ein paar Tage verpasst, aber egal, I’m a weirdo: Am 21. September 1992 veröffentlichten Radiohead ihr Debut, die erste Single ihres ersten Albums: Creep. Die Single wurde erst bei einem 1993er Rerelease zu dem weltweiten Hit, der er heute ist, und markierte den Auftakt zur Karriere einer der besten Bands aller Zeiten (auch wenn ihr letztes Album immer noch stinkt). According to Radiohead bassist Colin Greenwood, Thom Yorke wrote “Creep” while studying at Exeter University in the late 1980s. Guitarist Jonny Greenwood said the song was inspired by a girl that Yorke had followed around who showed up unexpectedly during a show by the band.
In 1992 during rehearsal sessions with producers Sean Slade and Paul Q. Kolderie, Radiohead spontaneously performed “Creep”. Yorke described “Creep” to the producers as “our Scott Walker song”; Slade and Kolderie mistook the singer’s remark and believed the song was a cover. After tension arose due to unsatisfactory attempts at recording other songs, Slade and Kolderie tried to improve morale by requesting Radiohead to play “Creep” again. The band recorded the song in a single take; after the performance everyone in the room burst into applause. Once the band assured Kolderie that “Creep” was an original song, he called EMI to tell them to consider the song as Radiohead’s next single. While the recording had minimal overdubs and the band did not intend to release it, the producers were impressed with the song. Due to similarities to “The Air That I Breathe”, a song recorded by The Hollies in 1973, Radiohead was successfully sued for plagiarism. Consequently, Albert Hammond and Mike Hazlewood are credited as co-writers of “Creep”.

Radioheads Alben “Kid A” und “OK Computer” in voller Länge als 8-Bit Versionen
Einige von Euch merkten bereits an, dass hier deutlich weniger passiert wenn Rene nicht da ist. Das Stimmt. Ich weiß nicht woran es bei den anderen liegt, aber hinten im Backend ist Nerdcore unfassbar träge. So träge, dass wenn ich hier was bloggen will, manchmal gar nichts geht. Gar nichts außer warten, was meine Stärke nicht ist.
Ich hatte gestern Abend diese beiden chipgetunten Radiohead Alben gefunden und hätte sie gerne hier gebracht, als ich aber auf “Artikel erstellen” klickte passierte so lange nichts, bis ich die Dinger bei mir schon draußen hatte. Sei es drum, jetzt geht hier wieder was, deshalb eben jetzt hier noch mal. Weil: Radiohead, Chiptune, Nerdcore – ihr wisst schon.
Für mich im Original riesige Alben und beide in meinen zehn All Time Favourites. Youtuber QuintonSung hat sich beide genommen und komplett in 8-Bit Sound-Ästhetik umgewandelt. Außerdem gibt es die Teile zum Download (Links dazu in den Youtube-Direktlinks). Keine Ahnung, ob die wer haben muss, aber wer beide Alben hier am Stück durchzuhören schafft ohne danach gegen Wände zu laufen, kann sich beim nächsten Potsdam-Besuch eine Flasche Wodka bei mir abholen.

Kids review Radioheads “Paranoid Android”
Ronny schreibt irgendwas mit “Kunstkacke” und ich muss ja immer ein bisschen in mich reingrinsen, wenn ich sowas im Zusammenhang mit Radiohead lese oder höre. Ich beschreibe Radiohead ja als “Slayer für Introvertierte” oder “Hardcore for the Brain”. Aber was weiß ich schon.

Und wo wir grade bei der besten Band der Welt sind: Schöne Story auf Metafilter um die Kette von Ereignissen, die letztenendes zum Namen Radiohead führten, es spielen mit: Stephen Tobolowsky (Ned Ryerson, Glee, Californication), Jonathan Demme (Silence of the Lambs), die Talking Heads und Radiohead. Dass der Name auf dem Talking Heads-Song basiert, wusste ich. Den Rest nicht.
One day in 1984 character actor Stephen Tobolowsky (Groundhog Day, the original, unaired pilot of Buffy The Vampire Slayer) was walking down the street when Jonathan Demme pulled up and asked if he wanted to see a movie he was finishing. Tobolowsky accepted: taking his girlfriend Beth Henley, they went to the Academy Linwood Dunn Theatre to watch the rough cut of the movie, Stop Making Sense. The audience in the otherwise empty theatre consisted of Tobolowsky, Henley, and Demme, along with members of Talking Heads, including David Byrne and Tina Weymouth.
Later, Byrne passed Tobolowsky on his bike and asked if he wanted to work on a new movie. Interest sparked again, and during the ensuing collaboration Tobolowsky shared his past experience of psychic phenomena. Inspired, Byrne went on to write Radio Head. The song was heard by Thom Yorke and became the name of his band.
