Ralph McQuarrie R.I.P.

The Creator of Darth is dead.
Man, Death is a Bitch. I’d like some guys to live forever. Ralph is one of them.
Von Tor.com:
We are sad to report that concept art legend Ralph McQuarrie passed away today. McQuarrie was the designer of the original Star Wars movies, Battlestar Gallactica, ET, Star Trek and many other science fiction classics.
Arguably his most recognizable creation was the design for Darth Vader, (back when the movie was still called Adventures of Luke Starkiller.)
It is impossible to overstate the effect he has had on a generation of movie goers and how we see the future. Our thoughts are with the McQuarrie family and those closest to him.

[update] Von George Lucas:
“I am deeply saddened by the passing of such a visionary artist and such a humble man. Ralph McQuarrie was the first person I hired to help me envision Star Wars. His genial contribution, in the form of unequaled production paintings, propelled and inspired all of the cast and crew of the original Star Wars trilogy. When words could not convey my ideas, I could always point to one of Ralph’s fabulous illustrations and say, ‘Do it like this.’
“Beyond the movies, his artwork has inspired at least two generations of younger artists—all of whom learned through Ralph that movies are designed. Like me, they were thrilled by his keen eye and creative imagination, which always brought concepts to their most ideal plateau. In many ways, he was a generous father to a conceptual art revolution that was born of his artwork, and which seized the imaginations of thousands and propelled them into the film industry. In that way, we will all be benefiting from his oeuvre for generations to come. Beyond that, I will always remember him as a kind and patient, and wonderfully talented, friend and collaborator.”
The Creative Process of Chewbacca

“I think I just ran over something back there, I think I ran over a wookie”. This is the first emergence of the word Wookiee as we know it today. And the small wookies in THX who lived in the shell of this environment became the large wookiee that we all know in Star Wars. […]
“And later on after the recording I asked Terry ‘What’s the Wookie?’ and he said ‘Oh that’s a friend of mine who lives in Texas, Ralph Wookie, and I just threw his name in there as I always want to stick it to him and thought he’d get a kick out of hearing his name in a film’. Little did Terry know what kind of thing he was creating, this off-hand phrase has since become a character that literally billions of people probably know about.”

Before the film Star Wars was actually filmed an artist by the name of Ralph McQuarrie was hired to do pre-production art and design much of the look of the Star Wars Universe. Many of the characters have a much different look then the one that eventually ended up on screen.
My versions are not intended to be 100% accurate. I took some stylistic liberties and combined certain different sketches into a new design.

Muss ich eigentlich erwähnen, dass ich R2D2 und C3PO im McQuarrie-Design als Action-Figuren habe? Nee, oder?

Ralph McQuarrie Darth Vader-Helm

Digital sculptor Jay Kushwara “captured the true sinister essence of the Darth Vader that Ralph McQuarrie envisioned in his original sketch,” said Bryan Ono, president of eFX, the company producing the $900 collectible helmet, in a press release Thursday.
Only 250 of the three-piece Ralph McQuarrie Signature Edition Darth Vader Concept Helmets (pictured) will be made. Pre-orders from eFX will begin at 9 a.m. PST Monday, with a non-refundable deposit of $250 required at time of pre-order. The helmets are expected to ship in late May.

McQuarrie studied at the Art Center College of Design in California where he met a fellow traveler in Syd Mead. Though in a competitive field, he didn’t see himself competing with other artists: “I looked at Syd Mead’s stuff and how do you help but feel a bit intimidated? I liked his stuff from the very start. It always made me want to do better work, but it was inspiration, not competition. I think there’s a difference.”
In 1972 Ralph was approached by Hal Barwood to produce visualizations for a science-fiction movie project he was undertaking with his friend Matthew Robbins called ‘Galaxy’. It just so happened that Hal and Matthew had another friend who was interested in getting his science-fiction movie off the ground, so when George Lucas saw the drawings he met with McQuarrie and explained his vision for a space-fantasy film.

Next to doing concept sketches for the designs of the ships and aliens on Battlestar Galactica 1978, Ralph McQuarrie was also asked to paint 24 color images to be used on the first script of the pilot “Saga of a Star World”. This script (of which only 50 were printed) was written to convince the studios to pick up this costly project and the illustrations helped to explain and visualize the story.
