Schöner Podcast/Hörspiel/Soundstory/Whatever (MP3) von EinsLive über Stephan Urbach, der im Arabischen Frühling mit dem Aktivisten-Zusammenschluss Telecomix technische Infrastruktur zur Verfügung stellte (und Modem-Einwahlnummern per Fax auf gut Glück nach Ägypten gefaxt hat – was funktionierte!) und im arabischen Raum viele Leute der Opposition kennenlernte. Die Spex hatte vor einer Weile ein gutes Interview mit ihm, jetzt hat EinsLive/WDR seine Story zu einem Hörspiel (oder so) verarbeitet. Ich hab’s noch nicht komplett gehört, erscheint aber toll:
Während der Konflikte des arabischen Frühlings saß Stephan Urbach wochenlang vor seinem Computer in einem unscheinbaren Mietshaus in Berlin-Charlottenburg. Von dort aus unterstützte er per Mausklick die Opposition in Ägypten und Syrien, lud Videos von Demonstrationen ins Netz. Als Teil einer Hackergruppe lieferte er die digitale Infrastruktur, mit der Demonstranten in Krisengebieten Informationen im Netz veröffentlichen können – oft 20 Stunden am Tag, denn das entgegengebrachte Vertrauen verpflichtet.
Doch dann wird Urbach selbst zum Opfer seines digitalen Kampfes für Informationsfreiheit. Zu krass sind die Bilder auf seinem Desktop, die Berichte von Freunden, die er noch nie persönlich getroffen hat. Ausgebrannt und depressiv will er sich mit Anfang 30 das Leben nehmen. Statt der Welt zu helfen, braucht er selbst Hilfe und stellt fest, dass er nicht der Einzige ist.

The Square: Documentary about the Egypt Revolution

Toller Trailer zur Doku „The Square“ über die Revolution in Ägypten vor zwei Jahren. Der Film hatte grade Premiere auf dem Sundance Filmfestival und sucht jetzt per Kickstarter die Finanzierung für ‘nen finalen Schnitt und Distribution.
The time to tell this story is now. Egypt’s revolution is not over. From songs to graffiti, the Egyptian revolution is not just a flash, its a movement. That is why we’re making this film. To really tell the story of what happened (and is happening) in Tahrir Square, in Egypt.
As they say in the film, “No one can tell our stories except for us.” We are duty-bound to ensure that the story of Tahrir Square is told by the people who lived it.

Graffiti began to appear on walls around Egypt during the January 25 uprising 2 years ago. Prior to that, there was little to no street art in all of Egypt. But now, the walls of Cairo’s streets are covered in so many layers of graffiti and posters, grime and fumes, that studying the layers is like reading a book on everything these walls have witnessed. The uprising, the downfall, the unity and the coming apart are all shown in street art pieces – pieces that speak for those that do not have a voice.
Despite being perceived by the majority of Egyptians to be “pointless scribbling” on the walls, artists who got their start during the revolution have been commissioned for magazine cover art, have given lectures and been featured in documentaries about their work, including ours – The Square, an on-the-ground look at revolutionaries throughout the Tahrir uprisings.

A Screening of La Haine in London
The Other Cinema hat kurz nach dem 1. Mai und vor den Londoner Bürgermeister-Wahlen ein Screening von Mathieu Karrovitz “La Haine” (Hass) veranstaltet, parallel in London und Paris, rund ein Jahr nach den London Riots. Das riecht einerseits ein bisschen nach Monetarisierung von Rebellions-Chique (auch wenn die Screenings von Other Cinema gratis sind), aber andererseits denke ich, dass das Statement mit diesem Film in diesen Locations zu diesem Zeitpunkt nicht eindeutiger ausfallen können. Kudos.
On the eve of the London mayoral election, The Other Cinema, from the creators of Secret Cinema, launched with an inspired free community screening of LA HAINE at the Broadwater Farm Community Centre in Tottenham, London.
As part of The Other Cinema network and tour, the production will travel from Broadwater Farm to The Troxy in Limehouse on 4th May, launch in outskirts of Paris, Saint-Ouen (free community screening) and conclude at Le Trianon in central Paris on 5th May where this production will close, the eve of the second round of the French presidential elections. Screenings are confirmed in 12 cities and towns in England and France from 2nd to 5th May, including Tallinn, Estonia.
Mathieu Kassovitz, Director of La Haine, said: “I’m proud and honored that LA HAINE after all these years is still a symbol of rebellion for old and new generations. The film’s impact is way beyond everything any director would hope for and the strength of Asian Dub Foundation’s music makes the film an interactive experience shared by audiences around the world. The choice of Tottenham for the first screening is a symbolic one; youth are still at lost in this globalized political world and don’t have any other voice to be heard than violence. Burning and looting is more than thieves stealing toasters. It’s the voice of the people that are at the lowest step of the ladder. It should be listened to with respect and intelligence and not simple accusations of ‘hoodlism’. I hope these screenings will help remember what we fight for. No justice. No peace.”
Schüler wegen Revolutionsankündigung festgenommen
In Wiesbaden haben sie einen 18jährigen Schüler festgenommen, weil er auf Facebook ‘ne Revolution angekündigt hatte. You say you want a revolution? Well, you know…
Es war kurz vor 13 Uhr gestern, als die Beamten einen Schüler der Albrecht-Dürer-Schule festnahmen. Der 18-Jährige hatte, so die Polizei, über das soziale Netzwerk Facebook angekündigt, eine Revolution machen zu wollen. Ein Schüler bekam dies mit und wandte sich an seinen Klassenlehrer.
Die Schulleitung informierte daraufhin die Polizei, die mit mehreren Dutzend Einsatzkräften schließlich nach dem Schüler fahndeten. In der Nähe des Schulgeländes in der Lahnstraße griffen die Beamten den Jungen schließlich auf. Er wurde in Gewahrsam genommen und verhört.

Ich höre grade der HR2 Der Tag Podcast über Demos, Proteste und Revolutionen:
Es ist mal wieder so weit. Die Menschheit steht vor einem neuen und globalen 68. Das zumindest behaupten die Macher der Frankfurter Ausstellung -Demonstrationen-. Vom Werden normativer Ordnungen. Vielleicht haben sie recht. Die Show zeigt nachdrücklich, wie die Menschheit ihre jeweiligen Wendezeiten erzwungen hat, auf der Straße nämlich, und wie ihre Geschichte immer begleitet wurde von einer speziellen Demonstrations-Ästhetik – vom Plakat bis hin zur Performance. Die Aufstände in Arabien und Russland, Occupy und andere Bewegungen könnten die These von der neuen Wendezeit bestätigen. Twittern und Facebook – das sind nur Vorspiele beim Kampf um die Macht. Ernst wird es, wenn die Menschen auf die Straße gehen und kämpfen, der kollektive Körper zur Waffe wird. Dumm nur, wenn manchmal auch die anderen gewinnen.

Das NDR-Medienmagazin Zapp berichtete gestern zehn minutenlang über deutsche Schnüffel-Software, die unter anderem während des arabischen Frühlings zum Einsatz kam und mit deren Hilfe politische Gegner verhaftet und möglicherweise gefoltert wurden. Mit Förderung der Bundesregierung. Mir fällt dazu nur folgendes Carlin-Zitat ein: „Customer always gets the real big smile, as the businessman carefully positions himself, directly behind the customer, and unzips his pants, and proceeds to service the account.“
Der arabische Frühling, der Aufstand gegen die Mubaraks, Gaddafis oder Ben Alis wurde im Internet organisiert. Das Internet als liberaler Raum, nicht zu kontrollieren von den Diktatoren dieser Welt. Was klingt das schön. Leider wurde genau dieses Internet vielen Oppositionellen zum Verhängnis. Und zwar dank deutscher Unternehmen. Sie haben offenbar ausgeklügelte Spionagesoftware an die arabischen Diktatorenstaaten geliefert.

Happy Guy Fawkes Day, everyone! Mein Buddy Daniel hat bei sich ziemlich gut zusammengefasst, worum es geht und wie sich die Wahrnehmung des katholischen Terroristen im Laufe der Geschichte gewandelt hat und heute schließlich bei Anonymous landete und zum Symbol für Netzaktivismus wurde.
1606 beschloss das Parlament, dass der 5. November jährlich gefeiert werden sollte, da der König überlebte. Und so wurden alljährlich Fawkes Puppen durchs Land getragen und in den Bonfire Nights verbrannt. Ironischerweise wurde aus der anfänglichen Verhöhnung der Attentäter bald eine Verhöhnung der Herscherschaft.
Ab 1650 wurde dann nicht mehr symbolisch eine Guy Fawkes Puppe verbrannt, sondern eine des Papstes. Später fanden auch Margaret Thatcher und andere ungeliebte Politiker ihren Weg ins Feuer. Das Bild von Fawkes wandelte sich mit der Zeit. Aus dem der verbrannt werden sollte, wurde ein Held, eine Identifikationsfigur.
In den USA wurde heute der Bank Transfer Day ausgerufen, eine Aktion aus dem Umfeld von Occupy Wallstreet, von Wikipedia:
Kristen Christian, an art gallery owner in Los Angeles, California, said she was dissatisfied with Bank of America’s “ridiculous fees and poor customer service.” She created an event on Facebook called “Bank Transfer Day” and invited her friends to close their accounts at big for-profit banks and move their money to credit unions by November 5, 2011. Christian chose November 5 because of its association with Guy Fawkes, who tried to blow up the British House of Lords, but was captured on that date in 1605. The Guy Fawkes imagery used on the initiative’s Facebook fan page was created by artist Eddie Colla for her NinetyNineToOne campaign “to help spread the message of Occupy Wall St. and show support.”
Gaddafi captured
Laut Reuters und einem Offiziellen des „National Transitional Council“ wurde Gaddafi gefangen genommen: „Deposed Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi was captured and wounded near his hometown of Sirte at dawn on Thursday as he tried to flee in a convoy which NATO warplanes attacked, National Transitional Council official Abdel Majid said on Thursday.“
Al Jazeera: Libyan TV reports ‘capture’ of Gaddafi: „Libyan TV is reporting that Muammar Gaddafi has been captured by NTC fighters in Sirte. Jamal abu-Shaalah, a field commander of NTC, told Al Jazeera that the toppled leader had been seized, but it was not clear whether he was dead or alive.“

Libyan comedian says harder to joke without Gaddafi
Einer der Arbeitslosen nach den Aufständen in Libyen. Von Reuters:
For 35 years Milood Amroni, Libya’s top comedian, used humor as a weapon to poke fun, ever so carefully, at the government of Muammar Gaddafi. But an uprising wrested Amroni’s home, the eastern city of Benghazi, from Gaddafi’s rule months ago. While the revolution means Amroni is finally able to joke openly without fear of disappearing into prison, he says he’s had enough of political jokes and wants to move on.
“I felt I had to start again from the very beginning,” Amroni told Reuters. “I felt that if I make jokes about Gaddafi they wouldn’t be good jokes because he’s too weak now and it’s not good to make jokes about a weak guy,” said the tall, pencil-thin 50-year-old.

Creative agency Marcel made some amazing ads for France 24 that are inspired by that classic movie. But instead of using black crows, they’ve used birds that were inspired by Twitter. “We all know the role of social networks and Internet in spreading revolutions in Tunisia, Egypt and Libya,” Marcel says. “Social networks are now an essential source of information. “France 24 and its agency Marcel have decided to highlight the link between freedom of information and freedom of expression on the Internet.”

Die Story um Fake-Amina aka Gay Girl from Damaskus wird immer absurder. Die hatte nämlich auf der Website Lez get real damit begonnen, über die Aufstände in Syrien zu berichten, und deren angebliche Betreiberin stellte sich jetzt als der 58jährige Bill Graber aus Ohio heraus und sowohl Tom MacMaster als auch Bill Graber haben als Fake-Lesbierinnen miteinander geflirtet, ohne vom jeweiligen Hoax zu wissen.

He said his connection to Amina was purely coincidental and started when Amina commented on a post on the Lez Get Real site in February. It “was a major sock-puppet hoax crash into a major sock-puppet hoax.” In the guise of Paula Brooks, Graber corresponded online with Tom MacMaster, thinking he was writing to Amina Arraf. Amina often flirted with Brooks, neither of the men realizing the other was pretending to be a lesbian.

Spannende Dokumentation über Gene Sharp, der in den Siebzigern das Buch „The Politics of Nonviolent Action“ geschrieben hatte und damit praktisch die Blaupausen für die Aufstände in Tunesien, Ägypten und Libyen gezeichnet hat. Der Film ist bereits abgedreht, die Macher finanzieren grade auf Kickstarter die Post-Produktion und den Vertrieb. Unbedingt unterstützenswert!
HOW TO START A REVOLUTION is a new documentary film revealing how one man’s work has helped millions of people achieve freedom in the face of oppression and tyranny.
Gene Sharp is a shy, modest and little-known man. But his work has inspired a generation of people to challenge dictators through non-violent action in a tidal wave of revolutionary spirit and reform that has swept from Eastern Europe, though Asia and to the Middle East and North Africa.
18 months ago we started work on this feature-length documentary. Through the candid and intimate testimony of the people responsible for non-violent revolutions our film seeks to tell the story of how people power can be used topple dictators.
To make this film our director (Ruaridh Arrow pictured above) slept overnight in Tahrir Square in Cairo at the height of the February revolution. He’s met the leaders of the Syrian pro-democracy movement and the people responsible for overthrowing dictators in Serbia and Ukraine. He has spent time with Gene and his colleagues as they spread their message of effective non-violent revolution.
The film reveals how the leaders of an uprising in one country train the participants in the next and how social media now threatens dictators and tyrants around the world in ways that were unimaginable just a decade ago.
