Die NSA hat ihr internes Buch über Online-Recherche namens Untangling the Web: A Guide to Internet Research ins Netz gestellt (PDF, anonymisierter Link zur NSA) und darin gibt es ein Kapitel über „Google Hacking“. Sowas wie der Googleguide für Spione.
The book […] is filled with advice for using search engines, the Internet Archive and other online tools. But the most interesting is the chapter titled “Google Hacking.” Say you’re a cyberspy for the NSA and you want sensitive inside information on companies in South Africa. What do you do?
Search for confidential Excel spreadsheets the company inadvertently posted online by typing “filetype:xls site:za confidential” into Google, the book notes. Want to find spreadsheets full of passwords in Russia? Type “filetype:xls site:ru login.” Even on websites written in non-English languages the terms “login,” “userid,” and “password” are generally written in English, the authors helpfully point out.
Misconfigured web servers “that list the contents of directories not intended to be on the web often offer a rich load of information to Google hackers,” the authors write, then offer a command to exploit these vulnerabilities — intitle: “index of” site:kr password.

Schönes Spielzeug, das sich derzeit bei Microsoft in der Entwicklung befindet: Mit Viral Search kann man die vorale Verbreitung von Items im Netz genau untersuchen. Beschränkt sich wohl noch auf Twitter und ist leider nicht öffentlich zugänglich, damit hätte ich gerne mal die #aufschrei-Debatte visualisiert.

Mega Search Engine
Es gibt jetzt eine Suchmaschine für Kimbles Megadings, die Suche basiert auf Links zum Filelocker, die im Netz gepostet werden:
The search engine doesn’t crawl Mega content — which is not possible because of Mega’s architecture. Instead, it relies on Mega users voluntarily providing links to files hosted on Mega’s service. Then downloaders can click and pull the content into their own Mega stash, or download it to their hard drives.
And the downloads are fast — way faster than a typical BitTorrent download.
Combined with Mega, the mega-search.me search engine — which is hosted from an anonymous domain — makes for a full blown piracy site, closer to what Megaupload was before it was brought down. Dotcom’s lawyer, Ira Rothken, said “no” when asked if his client had anything to do with the search engine.

Google does the Bacon Number
Google hat die Bacon-Nummer in seine Suchergebnisse eingebaut und zeigt sie (in der englischen Version) bei der Suche nach „Bacon Number [Schauspieler]“ entsprechend an. Die Bacon Nummer basiert auf dem Kleine-Welt-Phänomen von Stanley Milgram, das besagt, dass man jeden Menschen auf der Welt über sechs Ecken kennt. Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon wendet das auf Schauspieler und Bacon an. Wie auch immer: Awesome!
To use Google’s system, the user simply types in the words “Bacon number” followed by the name of the actor. By way of example, typing “Bacon number Simon Pegg” reveals that Bacon and the British actor are linked by Tom Cruise, because the latter appeared in 1992′s A Few Good Men with Bacon and in 2006′s Mission: Impossible III with Pegg. Pegg therefore has a Bacon number of two, indicating two degrees of separation.
Lead engineer Yossi Matias said the project was about showcasing the power of Google’s search engine by flagging up the deep-rooted connections between people in the film industry. “If you think about search in the traditional sense, for years it has been to try and match, find pages and sources where you would find the text,” he told the Hollywood Reporter. “It’s interesting that this small-world phenomena when applied to the world of actors actually shows that in most cases, most actors aren’t that far apart from each other. And most of them have a relatively small Bacon number.”

MC Hammer Searchengine:
MC Hammer hat auf der Web2.0-Summit in San Francisco eine Search Engine namens WireDoo vorgestellt, leider ist das Ding, wie /. richtig anmerkt, „not an index of things you can’t touch“. Dafür aber befindet sich das Ding derzeit noch in Entwicklung und man kann’s noch nicht ausprobieren sprich anfassen, immerhin: You can’t touch this, yet.
Youtube Insult Generator
Adrian Holovaty hat eine Suchmaschine für die Thumbs-Down-Kommentare auf Youtube programmiert. Das sind die Kommentare, die die aktuelle Zahl der Leute nehmen, die ein Video nicht mögen (per „Daumen runter“-Button) und da eine Beleidigung dranhängen: „it’s comments like “439 people own a zune” on the 2001 Steve Jobs iPod presentation. (439 people had disliked the video at the time the comment was posted.)“ Dann ersetzt er die Nummer und „People“ mit „You“ und auf einmal besitzt man laut dem YT Insult Generator eine von Microsofts MP3-Gurken. Das Ding ist lange noch nicht ausgereift, ist aber eine tolle Idee und nette Spielerei.
It uses the YouTube API to search for the top 50 most relevant videos for your search term. For each of those videos, it grabs the latest 50 comments. Then it looks through all that for comments starting with a number followed by a word such as “people,” “youtubers” or “nincompoops.” (View source for the full list, a regular expression that would make Alex Gaynor proud.) Finally, it just replaces the number and the word “people” with “You.”
It doesn’t do anything fancy like caching or giving users a way to mark searches as particularly funny, but it’s not bad for a quick hack.

One Year of Googlesearch-Feedbackloops as an Art-Performance

Seit dem 1. Januar 2011 stelle ich im Rahmen einer einjährigen Online-Performance alle meine Google-Suchanfragen ins Netz (genauer: seit Google Instant alle mit Enter bestätigt). Ich verstehe mich damit in der Tradition von z.B. Tehching Hsieh, der sich ein Jahr lang in einen Käfig gesperrt hat oder ein Jahr lang ausschließlich unter freiem Himmel gelebt hat. In meiner Performance kann man zudem Suchanfragen bestellen und per Paypal und Flattr bezahlen. Wie neulich ein Blog geschrieben hat handelt es sich dabei um einen ‘multilevel feedback loop’, bei ich wiederum die Berichte über die Perormance in Google eingebe und zum Teil meiner Performance werden lasse.
Da es sich bei meiner Protokolierungssoftware um ein modifiziertes Blog handelt, das für jede Suchanfrage eine eigene Seite erstellt, erscheinen meine Suchanfragen wieder als Suchergebnisse bei Google selbst. D.h. für alle meine bisher gut 3000 Suchanfragen gibt es einzelne Seiten, die weider untereinander verlinkt sind und demensprechent in den Suchergebnissen nach oben sortiert werden.
“Rene Walter” landet nicht vorne, weil Du einfach zu aktiv bist, und ich hab Dich auch schon ein Weilchen nicht mehr gegoogelt, aber dafür ein anderes Beispiel: “hyperkult xx” ein Workshop zum Thema Trivialisierung im Interface der Uni Lüneburg… Trotz der vielen Berichte landet meine Suchanfrage – also der wirkliche Nicht-Content – auf der ersten Seite.
Das Projekt zeigt also die Grenzen von Google auf. Außerdem geht es um den Wert unserer Suchanfragen. Schließlich machen wir alle Google durch unsere täglichen Anfragen und die (von Google mitprotokollierte und ausgewertete) Auswahl aus den angezeigten Ergebnissen ständig besser. Durch die Menge der Benutzer und die “kollektive” Verbesserung durch die User ist Google durch andere Suchmaschinenbetreiber kaum noch einzuholen. Für mich war es an der Zeit, zumindest einen Teil des Wertes meiner Suchanfragen zu beanspruchen und die Problematik der Autorschaft bei Suchanfragen in einer Performance zu thematisieren.

S. Anand hat in nur sechs Jahren den kompletten Text aller Calvin & Hobbes-Strips manuell abgetippt (!) und dazu eine AJAX-Echtzeitsuche gebastelt. Hier die „Bedienungsanleitung“ von Metafilter:
Viewing tips: Use the left and right arrow keys or the space bar to move from one strip to another. Clicking the left or right side of a strip works, too. Use Page Up or Page Down to skip forward or back a week at a time (useful for viewing those gorgeous Sunday strips). After searching for text, move forward or backward to browse the search results; delete your search terms to reset. You can also tweak the number after the # in the URL (in YYYYMMDD format) to jump to a specific date; for instance, #19920405 is April 5th, 1992. The Pirate Google
Vorgestern hatte ich erst eine mit der Google Custom Search hergestellte Torrent-Suchmaschine in den Links (mit dem hervorragenden Seitentitel: ☠ Google: [░░░░░░░░░░░░░] ◉ Torrent Search O Web Search), da kommt mir heute gleich eine eigene Pirate-Google-Website unter die Finger. Zeigt so ein bisschen die Absurdität des Prozesses angesichts der Technologie.
Please Note: This site is not affiliated with Google, it simply makes use of Google Custom Search to restrict your searches to Torrent files. You can do this with any regular Google search by appending your query with filetype:torrent. This technique can be used for any type of file supported by Google.
The intention of this site is to demonstrate the double standard that was exemplified in the recent Pirate Bay Trial. Sites such as Google offer much the same functionality as The Pirate Bay and other Bit Torrent sites but are not targeted by media conglomerates such as the IFPI as they have the political and legal clout to defend themselves unlike these small independent sites.
