When loaded, the pin-up image would be visible in flashing pulses that synchronized system-wide with the incoming flow of real-time radar data. A long exposure on Tipton’s Polaroid camera would have assured the steady image of the pin-up you see here. (The pin-up lady has a spot on her thigh because that is the center of the circular display, which is where the electron gun in the CRT naturally aims when it is idle.)
When contacted, dozens of SAGE veterans who worked in the program between 1958 and 1983 (the approximate lifetime of SAGE) recalled witnessing this pin-up program firsthand. Not surprisingly, the pin-up’s role changed over the decades as the technological culture shifted around it. While Tipton insists the pin-up had a diagnostic purpose, SAGE operators in later decades remember it as a lighthearted way to pass the dull hours of the late shift when traffic was slow or the standby machine was not in service (“At no time was the primary mission of air defense compromised to my knowledge,” wrote one veteran in an email to the author.)

Hier ein Interview mit Creative Director Rob Chenery und ein paar der Bilder, hier der Flickr-Stream von Diego Gravinese, der aus dem Fotoshooting eins seiner Gemälde machte und hier ‘ne Flickr-Galerie von yours truly, weil Gravinese seine Bilder nicht wirklich sortiert. Die Platte wäre natürlich auch ohne Ahornsirup und Goldbikinis absolute Pflicht für mich.
Could you please give us a brief description of the creative and execution process? And, was the band involved throughout it?
Tourist put forward style boards for various props including gold bikinis, sunglasses, etc., the look of the models from magazine reference as well as how we wanted the syrup to drip off the pancakes. We sent all the style books to the band to approve before the shoot commenced. The band’s brief was to create ‘an unapologetically mainstream 70’s porn, kitsch Linda Lovelace vs Raquel Welch vibe’ with big, bold retro looking typography.
Trying to find a 3D modelling company in London to build three giant 8-foot pancakes within the budget was impossible, so we had everything created in Argentina for the shoot.
Diego was let loose to transform it into a retro looking piece of art after a considerable amount of retouching on the final photo to get the syrup looking just right. The album is out on CD Deluxe and gatefold LP mushroom vinyl on August 20.

Die Dingsbumse heissen eigentlich Quasten oder Bommel oder was weiß ich, beim Googlen bin ich noch auf Nippeldeckel und Nippelhütchen gestoßen, aber das sind alles Worte, die ich nicht mit Nippel in Verbindung bringen will. Bei Nippelquaste denke ich an ‘ne ansteckende Krankheit und nicht an Nippeldingsbums. Nippelbommel ist mir dann auch zu albern, außerdem hat das Wort einen zu gleichmäßigen Silbenrythmus. Nippelschmuck ginge noch, aber das schließt auch Piercings mit ein, der Fachbegriff wäre also Nippeldeckel oder Nippelquaste, was beides eher suboptimal ist. Nippelhütchen ist zu altbacken und das englische Wort Nipple Tassle ist auch nicht wirklich sexy, daher bleibe ich bei einem entschiedenen Nipple Burlesque-Thing. Aus Papier.
