Laura und Françoirs schreiben mir: „After a year of production, we are very pleased to announce that our new short film ‘LSD ABC’ has been released. LSD ABC is an unusual animated alphabet. Through 26 letters we explored different worlds and characters as different as they are crazy. The film was directed by Laura Sicouri and Kadavre Exquis and the music was composed by Kadavre Exquis. On this occasion, label “Enfance” teamed with him and released a 14 Tracks soundtrack which is available both in digital and in vinyl.“

Pop culture phenomenon Luther Campbell—aka Luke Skyywalker or Uncle Luke—is cast in the central role. In real life, Campbell is a Miami celebrity, former member of 2 Live Crew—the controversial group famous for sexually explicit tracks like Me So Horny—and future Miami mayoral candidate. Like the Terminator who became Governor of California and former Minnesota Governor/WWF wrestler Jesse Ventura, Campbell bizarrely blends personality with pop culture persona. Following the storyline of La Jetée, Campbell plays a slightly altered version of himself as a time-traveler who revisits his memories.
Uncle Luke begins in Miami’s Liberty City, where the Luther Campbell character sees a man get killed. “Damn! Motherfucker just got cut! To the white meat!” The story then merges into actual events from Campbell’s life. He rises to fame and is subsequently brought to trial for obscenity—in Leyva’s script, the court case is “Stale White Bitches vs. The 2 Live Crew.” Uncle Luke then fast-forwards through an imagined sci-fi future. Campbell wins the election for Mayor, survives a nuclear meltdown at the Turkey Point power station, and then, well, hopefully you have seen La Jetée and you get the picture.

Shorts: Jonah and Captain T&T
Zwei großartige Kurzfilme aus Zanzibar in Afrika und Trinidad & Tobago in Südamerika. Beide Filme bedienen sich ziemlich vielen Fantasy-Elementen in der Bildsprache, Captain T&T mischt stellenweise Realfilm mit Animationen, um ziemlich klassische und einfache Storys zu erzählen. Gefällt mir im Kontext des Afrika- und Südamerika-Settings ausgesprochen gut.
Jonah ganz oben von Kibwe Tavares handelt von Mbwana, der zusammen mit seinem besten Freund Juma einen riesigen Fisch fotografiert und so sein Kaff in eine Touristenmetropole verwandelt: „Jonah is a big fish story about the old and the new, and the links and the distances between them. A visual feast, shot though with humour and warmth, it tells an old story in a completely new way.“
Muss man sich vorstellen wie City of God mit Gentrifizierung und riesigen Fischen statt Koks und Crime, und das noch gemischt mit Life of Pi, Der Alte Mann und das Meer und selbstverständlich der Story Jonah and the Whale. Hauptdarsteller Daniel Kaluuya kennt Ihr übrigens aus meiner Lieblings-Black-Mirror-Folge 15 Million Merits als Bing, ein Making Of des Films gibt’s hier.
Und darunter der tolle Kurzfilm Captain T&T (Captain Trinidad & Tobago) von Kden Hee Chung, der ‘ne hübsche kleine Story über Fantasie, Bullying und Comics erzählt: „Thin Foot“ liest jede Menge Comics und testet sich selbst auf Superkräfte.

Nano-Stopmotion-Movie made with Atoms
IBM haben einen Kurzfilm gedreht, ein Stopmotion-Clip aus Atomen: A Boy and his Atom. Der Film dürfte dem Plot nach – „a character called Atom who befriends a single atom and goes on a ‘playful journey’“ – halbwegs an den 1946er Kurzfilm A Boy and His Dog angelehnt sein und ich gehe schwer davon aus, dass die Parallele zum gleichnamigen Atomkriegsapokalypsenfilm entweder rein zufällig ist, oder einer von IBMs Konzeptionern war an dem Tag irgendwie subversiv drauf. Jedenfalls: Oben der Stopmotionfilm aus Atomen, hier noch ein Making Of:

IBM moved the molecules using two of its own scanning tunnelling microscopes. It’s a huge machine that weighs two tonnes, operates at minus 268 degrees Celsius and magnifies atoms — placed on a copper surface — by 100 million times. The machine moved around 5,000 carbon monoxide molecules to create the movie. Each time the molecules were arranged in the right way, the IBM team rendered a still image to create each of the 242 frames. In those frames, you can only see one atom or pixel because you look at it from above. It took roughly 10 days of 18-hour shifts to get each frame right.

Bloody Cuts: Pretty frightastic Horror-Shorts
Bloody Cuts ist eine crowdfinanzierte Kurzfilmserie mit jeder Menge Blut und Gore. Insgesamt sollen das 13 Horror-Shorts werden, acht davon wurden bislang veröffentlicht. Die ersten paar sind ganz nett, aber vor allem die letzten drei Shorts machen richtig viel Spaß und nicht zu vergessen: In ihrem Blog veröffentlichen sie wunderbar trashige Poster zu den Kurzfilmen.

Und dann haut das legendäre japanische Animationsstudio Ghibli seine erste Realverfilmung als Short raus: „Giant God Warrior Appears in Tokyo“ basiert auf Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind, dem allerersten Zeichentrickfilm von Ghibli (noch bevor das Studio eigentlich gegründet wurde). Der Kurzfilm hat noch ein paar weitere Ghibli-Verbindungen, von Twitch:
the short was commissioned by Anno Hideaki, the director of landmark anime series Neon Genesis Evangelion and to be directed by Higuchi Shinji, one of Anno’s key Evangelion artists. As intriguing as the Eva connection is, however, the real hook lies farther back in Anno’s past. All the way back to the beginning, in fact, to the days when Anno cut his teeth as a fledgling animator working under Miyazaki Hayao as a key animator on Nausicaa Of The Valley Of The Wind.
Yes, Giant God Warrior Appears In Tokyo has a direct Miyazaki connection. Two of them, in fact. First, Miyazaki himself provided the design for the creature. And, second, the short now stands as the first live action work produced directly by Miyazaki’s Studio Ghibli.

For us, it’s an ironic reflection about how nature adapts to the human invasion. We found a great inspiration in an Amazonian bird, the Lira, which imitates the sounds it hears in the environment. It does it with such a lack of criticism or judgment that it imitates the other birds singing, the power saws’ noise or the crash of the trees falling in the same way.

Der Clip ist auf Youtube wegen GEMA-Bullshits gesperrt, jetzt also auf Vimeo. Marc Donahue hat sich aus jeder Menge GoPro-Cams eine Matrix-Bullettime-Dingsbums gebaut. Schönes Video, man sollte beim Thema GoPro allerding auch erwähnen, dass die vor wenigen Tagen erst versucht haben, ein negatives Review wegen Copyright-Unsinns löschen zu lassen. Vollidioten. Shortfilm: Continuums Partner
Philipp von Dead Cat Bounce hat für die Continuum-Kurzfilmreihe von Stage 5 – über die ich hier schonmal gebloggt hatte – einen Film über einen futuristischen Quadratschädel gedreht, der durch Berlin latscht. Nettes Ding geworden und das Ende geht in Richtung Tron, ohne jetzt zuviel verraten zu wollen. Philipp schreibt mir:
Zusammen mit einem Kumpel hatte ich im Januar die Gelegenheit, in Berlin einen Kurzfilm zu drehen, zu dem ich u.a. das Skript beisteuern durfte. Der ganze Spaß war für eine YT-Kurzfilmreihe mit Geek/Fantasy/Gaming-Schwerpunkt (falls es interessiert: http://www.youtube.com/user/stagefivetv).
Das Narrativ ist bis zur Pointe recht simpel (Typ wandert durch Berlin und trifft auf Mitmenschen), aber insgesamt ist der Film echt fluffig geworden und würde thematisch, denk’ ich, auch auf dein Blog passen.
