Mein neuer Feedreader, nachdem Google seinen heute morgen abgeschossen hat: Newsbeuter. Ist natürlich Unsinn, nette Spielerei für Nerds, aber nicht wirklich brauchbar.
Wie das halbe Internet auch hab’ ich mich heute auf die Suche gemacht nach einem Ersatz für den Google Reader. Ich hab’ da ein paar andere Ansprüche, Bloggen ist mein Job und der Feedreader ist das zentrale Arbeitswerkzeug für mich. Das muss mit fast 1000 Feeds klarkommen und die in einer möglichst effizienten Weise darstellen. Damit sind Schnickschnackreader wie Flipboard oder Pulse per se raus und die allermeisten Alternativen sind für mich nicht wirklich brauchbar, vom schicken Feedly bis Netvibes oder Fever. Die versagen allesamt, wenn man wirklich mit Feeds arbeiten muss und die nicht mal so nebenher konsumiert.
Selbstgehostete Lösungen wie Tiny Tiny RSS sehen extrem interessant aus, aber ich kann meiner Datenbank beim besten Willen nicht auch noch einen Feedreader zumuten, die hat mit NC bereits genug zu tun.
Ich kehre also wieder zurück zu meinem alten Feedreader: Net News Wire. Ich nutzte den GoogleReader gar nicht so lange, ich bin erst vor wenigen Jahren umgestiegen (2010 oder so), weil mir das RSS-Lesen im Browser beim gleichzeitigen Bloggen effizienter erschien. Jetzt halt wieder eine eigene Applikation, meinzwegen.
NNW ist eine Desktop-App mit switchbaren Layouts, integriertem Browser, detailierten Font- und Farb-Einstellungen, integriertes Delicious, Twitterific und MarsEdit. Man kann natürlich OPMLs im- und exportieren, man kann Subfolder erstellen, man kann pro RSS-Abo (!) festlegen, wie oft es aktualisiert wird oder wie lange die Headlines im Reader bleiben. Sehr schickes Feature: Man kann sich anonnierte Feeds anzeigen lassen, die in einem bestimmten Zeitraum nicht geupdated haben. Perfekt um Karteileichen zu entfernen. Und: Man kann Beiträge, die editiert wurden, als „unread“ markieren lassen, inklusive einer Darstellung der geänderten Stellen. Sehr erhellend, manchmal.
Dazu kommt eine superschlanke Listenansicht, die mir das Arbeiten extrem erleichtert (da ich sehr oft „nur“ Headlines scanne). Leider gibt’s Net News Wire nur für’n Mac, ob’s etwas vergleichbares für Windows oder Linux gibt, weiß ich nicht. Jedenfalls ist NNW das einzige Tool, das für mich als Arbeitswerkzeug wirklich funktioniert. Welcome back, Baby!

Hey, Lazyweb! Twitter spielt mal wieder Arschloch und stampft die Apps für iPhone und Android sowie meine geliebte Multispalten Desktop App ein, will sich nur noch auf eine Browser-App konzentrieren. Und ich brauche eine Alternative für MacOS, die mit mehreren Twitter-Accounts zurecht kommt und Facebook kann und alle Accounts auf einmal anzeigen kann.
Ein weiteres Tab im Browser kann ich nicht gebrauchen und würde jetzt erstmal auf Twitterific ausweichen, aber das Teil ist auch eher suboptimal. Hootsuite läuft leider auch nur im Browser und kostet noch dazu monatliches Geld, das ich für die Bedienung von eigentlich kostenfreien Services nicht wirklich bereit bin, auszugeben. Eine Software selbst darf gerne ein paar Euro kosten und muss keine Freeware sein, solange ich nicht monatlich abdrücken muss. Anyone, pls?

Adobe Flash anyone? In recent years, the company has claimed it had eight million downloads a day and, before we get on to the maths, have you ever followed that link that took you a second to ignore as you ticked the “I have read and agree…” box? […] Why don’t they just have a box that says, “Whatever, dude” or “I have read and understood… You’re kidding, right?”
Yet the tickbox convenience provided serves to reinforce the user attitude that, I’ll never read or understand any of this… can we just get on with it now?
So eight million people a day lie to Adobe. Or put it another way, 8 million honest people who all took at least ten minutes to read this licence agreement and, oh lordy, understood it, would, in terms of total time, eat up over 1,522 years in just one day. If we put that into man-hours: an 8hr day, 240 working days in a year, that becomes 6944 years in a day. Turn that into a 50-year working life and that’s 138 lifetimes a day… How about a year of Adobe Flash downloads with the licence agreement being read each time… that’s 50,694 working lifetimes per annum… Equivalent to populations of Macclesfield or Staines.

Tracking Faces in Places
Faces in Places ist eine alte Internet-Meme, basierend auf der gleichnamigen Website, die wiederum auf dem alten psychologischen Prinzip Pareidolia fusst: Gesichter in Gegenständen sehen. Kann man machen. Viel spannender finde ich allerdings die Idee von Greg Borenstein, der eine Facetracking-Software über sämtliche Bilder einer ähnlichen Flickr-Gruppe laufen lies um zu sehen, ob die in den Fotos ebenfalls Gesichter erkennt.
Facial recognition techniques give computers their own flavor of pareidolia. In addition to responding to actual human faces, facial recognition systems, just like the human vision system, sometimes produce false positives, latching onto some set of features in the image as matching their model of a face. Rather than the millions of years of evolution that shapes human vision, their pareidolia is based on the details of their algorithms and the vicissitudes of the training data they’ve been exposed to.
Their pareidolia is different from ours. Different things trigger it.
I decided to run all of the images from the Hello Little Fella Flickr group through FaceTracker and record the result. These images induce pareidolia in us, but would they do the same to the machine?

Rolf-Dieter Klein hat eine Geigerzähler-App für Android-Handys entwickelt, iPhone soll folgen. Das Ding ist kein Spaßdings und funktioniert, im Video oben wird ein Handy mit App bei 10 Sievert/Stunde (nicht Mikro- oder µ-Sievert) getestet. Hier noch ein ausführlicheres Demo-Video.
The app works by blocking all the light coming into a phone’s camera sensor with a piece of tape or plastic. Because high energy radiation will cause artifacts on the CMOS camera sensor inside the phone, radiation will be captured as tiny specks of white light.

3D-printed Minecraft-Models
Mit Mineways kann man 3D-Modelle aus Minecraft exportieren und auch auf einem 3D-Drucker ausgeben. Ich schätze mal, Minecraft ist mit seinen Möglichkeiten noch lange nicht am Ende und grade von der Kombination Minecraft/3D-Printing werden wir noch ‘ne Menge hören. Das Prinzip kam vor einem halben Jahr noch aus dem MIT-Medialab mit Kommandozeilen-Optik (damit hat vor ein paar Tagen jemand ein Miniatur-Dorf gedruckt, das er in Minecraft gebaut hatte), jetzt als Freeware mit GUI. Die Zukunft wird ist toll!

Ghostery ist ein sehr schönes Plugin für so ziemlich alle Browser, das die Tracking-Pixel und Whatnot auf Websites anzeigt und gegebenenfalls blockt. Geht wahrscheinlich auch mit anderen Plugins, aber die haben keine Geister. Ich hab’ das Ding grade mal bei mir drüberlaufen lassen… sagen wir’s mal so: da geht einiges.

Live-Video Manipulation-Software
Grade machen zwei Videos die Runde, die Software der TU Ilmenau bzw des Max Planck Instituts zeigen, die Bilder aus einem Live-Videostream so manipulieren kann, dass Gegenstände oder Personen verschwinden beziehungsweise verändert werden können. Ich freue mich schon auf die ersten gehackten Überwachungskameras, auf deren Bilder lauter kleine Aphex Twins rumlatschen oder auf den Clip eines Überfalls, in dem lauter Jokers zu sehen sind. Jedenfalls kann man ab jetzt auch Live-Videos nicht mehr trauen.

Die Technische Universität Ilmenau hat dazu das weltweit erste Diminished Reality-System entwickelt, mit dem einzelne Objekte aus Live-Videostreams in Echtzeit enfernt werden können (s. Fotos 1 und 2). Das Fachgebiet Virtuelle Welten / Digitale Spiele stellt Diminished Reality, auf Deutsch etwa „Reduzierte Realität“, vom 13. bis zum 16. Oktober in der Südkoreanischen Hauptstadt Seoul auf dem International Symposium on Mixed and Augmented Reality (ISMAR) erstmals vor.
Aufgrund seiner Echtzeitfähigkeit ist das Diminished Reality-System der TU Ilmenau derzeit weltweit einzigartig. Der potenzielle Markt für die neue Technologie ist gigantisch. Der Leiter des Fachgebiets Virtuelle Welten / Digitale Spiele, Prof. Wolfgang Broll, sieht zahllose Möglichkeiten, Diminished Reality in der Praxis einzusetzen: „Die Anwendungen sind so vielfältig wie die Wirklichkeit. Wir alle kennen das Problem, dass wir zunehmend mit Reizen und Informationen überflutet werden. Diese Technologie ermöglicht es jetzt erstmals gezielt, visuelle Eindrücke zu reduzieren. Dies erlaubt uns, sich auf die wichtigen Dinge zu konzentrieren und fehlenden Platz für Neues zu schaffen“.

We present a system for quick and easy manipulation of the body shape and proportions of a human actor in arbitrary video footage. The approach is based on a morphable model of 3D human shape and pose that was learned from laser scans of real people.
The algorithm commences by spatio-temporally fitting the pose and shape of this model to the actor in either single-view or multi-view video footage. Once the model has been fitted, semantically meaningful attributes of body shape, such as height, weight or waist girth, can be interactively modified by the user. The changed proportions of the virtual human model are then applied to the actor in all video frames by performing an image-based warping. By this means, we can now conveniently perform spatio-temporal reshaping of human actors in video footage which we show on a variety of video sequences.
