Radio Soulwax’ „Dave“: Mashing up the Thin White Duke for Cinema
Radio Soulwax haben „Dave“, ihre einstündige Film/Mashup-Hommage an David Bowie, komplett online gestellt. „Dave“ ist nun nicht das zwingendste, das Soulwax jemals gemacht haben, ich bin nun aber auch nicht der allergrößte Bowie-Fan. Und Soulwax versuchen immerhin, dem wirklich durch- und totgelutschten Konzept des Mashups ‘ne neue Richtung zu geben. In diesem Sinne: Schönes Ding!
Our homage to the man whose ability to change whilst remaining himself has been a massive influence on us. There are many legends in the music industry but for us, there is no greater than the mighty Dave. We’ve included all things Bowie, whether that is original songs, covers, backing vocals, production work or reworks we made, to attempt to give you the full scope of the man’s genius.
For the visual side to this mix our friend Wim Reygaert (who also made the amazing film for Into The Vortex) came up with the most ambitious film for RSWX, taking us on a fever dream time travel through the man’s career starring the amazing Hannelore Knuts as Dave. We’ve got to extend a special thank you to the cast and crew and everyone involved for putting so much time and energy and heart and soul into this amazing film, it is a pure labour of love for the phenomenon that is Bowie.

Am Montag gibt’s in der Soulwax Radio-App (über die ich vor einer Weile hier gebloggt hatte) einen neuen Mix mit gewohnter Mörder-Tracklist, das Video oben ist „nur“ der Trailer dazu, den kompletten Mix kann man sich per privatem Vimeo-Clip auf Creative Review anhören/ansehen. Das Teil hat einen Soulwax-Remix von Talking Heads’ „Once in a Lifetime“ und dieser Song ist einer der größten und besten Songs, die jemals geschrieben wurden. Forever! 2manyDJs haben gestern ihre App für iPhone/iPad veröffentlicht, das Ding ist eine Art Radio aus ihren Mixen plus Visuals und Animationen. Ich habe mir das Ding grade installiert und sehe bislang lediglich ihren Introversy-Mix (den ich hier schonmal vor zwei Jahren gebloggt hatte (der Zshare-Link auf Nialler9 funktioniert sogar noch) und der Download davon startet auch nicht, das sollte sich aber demnächst ändern und es sind jede Menge weiterer Gimmicks angekündigt. Ich bin gespannt.
Ok, so it’s a radio station, but not as you know it. For now, it’s a growing collection of 24 one hour-long mixes with visuals that we are sharing with you for free, and hopefully it will become a platform for many more things to come. We call them mixes, but in reality they are more like musical films based on the record sleeves.
Every hour has a different musical and visual theme (always based on the covers), to eventually make for a varied day-long radio schedule that will remain online in a rotated and continuous loop.
Over the next few months we will be adding a new show every week, culminating in a 24-hour musical and visual ‘experience’. Sorry, we couldn’t think of a better word than experience.
We have no idea how you will experience this, though, whether it will be too intense or too much to take in, or perhaps not enough. All we know is that we love it and had to do it, even though everyone called us crazy.
We spent ages trying to get everything to sound, look and feel right. We hope you appreciate this labour of love as it has taken a ridiculous amount of work.

Soulwax planen, schon bald ein 24h-Internetradio an den Start zu bringen. Und den Copyright-Blödsinn wollen sie auch gleich mit austricksen. 2010 rockt bis jetzt ziemlich derbe.
The Dewaele brothers, who were behind 2 Many DJs’ landmark mash up album As Heard on Radio Soulwax Pt. 2, are taking to the airwaves this year.
David and Stephen, who record under many different guises including 2 Many DJs, Soulwax and the Flying Dewaele Brothers, revealed to 6 Music that during the first half of this year they plan to launch Radio Soulwax.
It’s set to be a free internet radio station featuring mixes of hundreds of tracks.

Vor einem halben Jahr hauten mich Soulwax von den Socken mit ihrem 20minütigen Intro-Mix, in dem sie die Intros aus 99 Songs zu einem fantastischen DJ-Set verwursteten. Und jetzt: Am Montag waren Soulwax aka 2ManyDeejays aka in Rob da Bank BBC-Radioshow und haben dort dasselbe Konzept abgefeiert, nur in einer Stunde und mit 460 Songs (plus ein Mix mit Disco-Tracks, der aber nicht weiter interessiert). Soulwax’ „Part of the weekend never dies“-Tourdoku Online

Pitchfork.TV streamt derzeit die Soulwax Tourdoku ins Netz, der Film ist allerdings auch bereits auf irgendwelchen Wegen bei Google-Video gelandet. Genau das richtige für einen perfekten Sonntagabend. Snip von Wikipedia:
Director Saam Farahmand filmed Soulwax on their recent international tour dates, capturing all the excitement, chaos and humour of the world tour. Where the Beastie Boys filmed one gig with 50 cameras, Soulwax filmed 120 shows with one camera in Europe, Japan, US, Latin America and Australia.
This resulted in 2 films: a live music film and a documentary which includes 2manydj’s and Soulwax Nite Versions, and features James Murphy, Nancy Whang, Erol Alkan, Tiga, Justice, Busy P, So-Me, Peaches, Kitsuné, Klaxons and many more in behind the scenes footage, interviews and music. The DVD also includes a CD with the live concert, and is available in a hardbook DVD case and in a traditional CD case.
