Neil Harbisson nennt sich „somochromatic Cyborg“, kann nur schwarz/weiß sehen und läuft mit einem „Eyeborg“ auf dem Kopf rum, der ihm Farben in Töne übersetzt. Demnächst wird er sich das Ding in den Kopf einpflanzen lassen, wobei eine der dafür verwendeten Schrauben den Sound über Vibrationen über den Schädelknochen spürbar machen wird. Der Mann hat neulich ‘nen Vortrag auf der TED gehalten und ist im August auf der Campus Party in Berlin, sobald der TED-Clip online ist, sag’ ich Bescheid.
Mr. Harbisson’s current eyeborg is pressed against the base of his head with extremely high pressure, which allows the sounds to reverberate along his skull to his eardrums. But his new eyeborg, to be implanted in September, will be connected to his body through three screws in his head — two to support the antenna and electronic chip, and a third for the sound to be passed into his skull, which will vibrate with the sound. He expects it will take about two months for the bone to heal around the implant.
Mr. Harbisson gave details of his plans last week in an interview at the TEDGlobal conference in Edinburgh, where he gave a talk on stage while wearing an outfit of pink jacket, blue shirt and yellow pants (a “C major” chord, as he describes the colors).

DIY Synesthesia-Mask
Für den Science Hack Day 2011 in San Francisco haben ein paar Leute eine Synästhesie-Maske gebastelt, mit der man Optik auf der Haut fühlen kann. Dazu haben sie eine Webcam gehackt, deren Auflösung auf 3×4 Pixel reduziert und in einem 1-Bit-Modus laufen lassen (schwarz/weiß), die Signale haben sie an die in die Maske eingebauten Lautsprecher geschickt, die angeschaltet wurden, sobald die Kamera etwas sah. Schöne Idee!
Synesthesia is a condition in which one sensation (sight, hearing, etc) gets mixed up with another. This can cause situations in which someone “smells” sounds, or “sees” touches.
For this hack, we designed and built a full head mask that allows the wearer to feel images in real time. The mask is arrayed with 12 speakers that contact the skin of the face. When an image is captured with a webcam and converted into a 12 pixel black-and-white representation. The computer activates arduinos that control the speakers. If the pixel is white, the corresponding speaker is turned on. If the pixel is black, the corresponding speaker is turned off. This allows the wearer to feel (via the vibrations of the speakers) on their face.

Fantastischer Kurzfilm von Terri Timley über das Phänomen Synesthäsie, bei dem bei manchen Menschen Sinneseindrücke andere Verarbeitungen im Gehirn auslösen, heisst: Wochentage schmecken, Zahlen hören, Musik sehen und solche Späße.
Den Kurzfilm hatte ich schonmal vor fast genau zwei Jahren, aber da der Film ziemlich grandios ist, Synästhesie grundsätzlich immer knallt und außerdem unbedingt Rammstein hier wegmuss, blogge ich den einfach nochmal.

Synästhesie ist die Wahrnehmung von Reizen mit einem Sinn, der eigentlich nicht dafür bestimmt ist. Farben schmecken, Geräusche sehen, Geschmack hören… und sowas. Eigentlich schon abgefahren genug, hier aber der richtige Gehirnverknoter: Menschen, die Zeit sehen. Willkommen im Reich der Zeit/Raum-Synästhesie und weil mein Hirn grade implodiert ist, bleibt mir nur ein ehrliches und aufrichtiges Whoa!
Time-space synaesthesia is a form of visuo-spatial synaesthesia in which individuals experience units of time – such as hours, days, or months – as occupying specific locations in space relative to their own body. These associations are highly specific and are experienced consistently. For example, one synaesthete described her experience as follows: “When someone mentions a year, I see the oval with myself at the very bottom, Christmas day to be precise. As soon as a month is given, I see exactly where that month is on the oval. As I move through the year, I am very aware of my place on the oval at the current time, and the direction I am moving in.”
Michelle Jarick of the Synaesthesia Research Group at the University of Waterloo in Ontario and her colleagues describe the case of an individual whose time-space synaesthesia has a previously undescribed feature. Like other time-space synaesthetes, the 21-year-old individual, known as L, experiences the time of day and the months of the year as being represented in the space around her body. She experiences the hours of the day in the form of a large “clock face”, and her mental calender consists of a giant number “7″, which extends for approximately 1 meter around her waist, and on which the months of the year are arranged.

Ich wollte dieses Video mit dem Zusammenschnitt von Jonathan Fowlers Doku „Synesthesia“ grade in die Links packen, aber Delicious ist down und das Thema ist zu interessant. Synästhesie bezeichnet die Kopplung zweier Sinne, also das Sehen von Farben bei der Wahrnehmung von Temperatur oder die Verbindung von Zahlen mit Farben. Superinteressant für jemanden, der das wortwörtlich nicht nachvollziehen kann.
