Happy 50th, Quentin Tarantino!
Quentin Tarantino wird heute 50 Jahre alt! Ich muss wahrscheinlich nicht erzählen, wie sehr der Mann meine eigene Filmrezeption verändert und wie er praktisch im Alleingang (mit ein bisschen Hilfe von Harvey Keitel) Hollywood in wenigen Jahren erobert hat.
Der Mann wird nicht umsonst mit Orson Wells verglichen, Tarantino ließ sich für eine Szene in Pulp Fiction eine eigene Linse schleifen (die Szene in der Butch hinter der Mauer kauert und man im Hintergrund Marsellus Wallace nach dem Run-Over aufstehen sieht wäre mit einer normalen Linse nicht drehbar gewesen, der hat sich dafür eine mit unterschiedlichen Brennweiten schleifen lassen).
Tarantino hat im Alleingang die Namen John Travolte und Pam Grier wieder cool klingen lassen, der Mann ist schuld an beiden Oscars von Christoph Waltz, sein „schlechtester“ Film ist immer noch sehr gut (Death Proof), sein bester (Pulp Fiction) hat sein eigenes Genre erschaffen und ganze Jahrzehnte lang filmisches Erzählen umgekrempelt, Tarantino hat Trash den Weg in die Feuilletons geebnet. Das sind Verdienste für drei ganze Leben und der Mann hat das in nichtmal 25 Jahren geschafft, eins der wenigen echten Genies Hollywoods. Herzlichen Glückwunsch, very bad Motherfucker!

Floyds Honeybear Bong from True Romance

Kill Bill Parasite Wasp named Beatrix Kiddo
In Thailand hat man eine neue Art einer parasitären Wespenfamilie gefunden und hat sie nach Beatrix Kiddo aus Quentin Tarantinos „Kill Bill“ benannt. Originalzitat aus dem Film: „You’re not a worker bee. You’re a renegade killer bee.“ Passt nicht so ganz, aber fast.
Parasitoid wasps of the family Braconidae are known for their deadly reproductive habits. Most of the representatives of this group have their eggs developing in other insects and their larvae, eventually killing the respective host, or in some cases immobilizing it or causing its sterility. Three new species of the parasitoid wasp genus Cystomastacoides, recently described in the Journal of Hymenoptera Research, reflect this fatal behavior.
Two of the new species were discovered in Papua New Guinea, while the third one comes from Thailand. The Thai species, Cystomastacoides kiddo, was named after the character Beatrix Kiddo in Quentin Tarantino’s ‘Kill Bill’ films. The deadly biology of the wasp inspired this reference to the protagonist played by Uma Thurman, where she embodies a deadly assassin and a master of the Tiger/Crane style of kung fu. She is a master of the “Five Point Palm Exploding Heart Technique”, a method of killing a person by quickly striking five pressure points around the heart with the fingertips. After the victim takes five steps, the heart explodes and the person falls dead.

1986, Tarantino was a 23-year-old part-time actor and high-school dropout, broke, without an apartment of his own, showering rarely. With no agent, he sent out scripts that never got past low-level readers. “Too vile, too vulgar, too violent” was the usual reaction, he later said. According to Quentin Tarantino, by Wensley Clarkson, his constant use of the f-word in his script True Romance caused one studio rep to write to Cathryn Jaymes, his early manager: „Dear Fucking Cathryn, How dare you send me this fucking piece of shit. You must be out of your fucking mind. You want to know how I feel about it? Here’s your fucking piece of shit back. Fuck you.“
“Like a lot of guys who had never made films before, I was always trying to figure out how to scam my way into a feature,” Tarantino tells me. Though he was indisputably king of all movie knowledge at Video Archives, the suburban-L.A. store where he worked, in Hollywood he was a nobody. Surrounded by videos, which he watched incessantly, he hit upon an idea for recycling three of the oldest bromides in the book: “The ones you’ve seen a zillion times—the boxer who’s supposed to throw a fight and doesn’t, the Mob guy who’s supposed to take the boss’s wife out for the evening, the two hit men who come and kill these guys.” It would be “an omnibus thing,” a collection of three caper films, similar to stories by such writers as Raymond Chandler and Dashiell Hammett in 1920s and 1930s pulp magazines. “That is why I called it Pulp Fiction,” says Tarantino.

Vor vier Jahren postete Livejournal-User K. Pease eine kurze shakespearsche Adaption des Cheeseburger-Dialogs aus Pulp Fiction. Kurz danach machte man ein Wiki auf und übersetzte zwar nicht den kompletten Film in Shakespeak, aber große Teile davon. Und die wurden jetzt live in Hollywood in ‘nem Theater gezeigt. Speak ‘What’ again! Thou cur, cry ‘What’ again!

Dainumo hat Kill Bill auf Pogo-Art remixt und während mir die Arbeiten von letzterem mittlerweile zu den Ohren rauskommen (wer’s sich antun will, seine beiden letzten Clips waren ein Remix für die UN und ein Video aus seinem Weltreise-Projekt), ist das hier ganz nett. Mehr aber auch nicht und ich frage mich, wenn endlich mal einer kommt, und den ganzen mediokren, viel zu gefälligen Scheiß endlich wegtritt, grade Tarantinos Filme bieten sich für eine Kickass-Cutup-Technik gradezu an.
Und: Vor rund einem Jahr bloggte ich über Arthur Reeders chronologische Version von Tarantinos Pulp Fiction, jetzt hat er (?) ihn bei Youtube hochgeladen. Bitteschön:

Five years ago I was watching Pulp Fiction with my friends and someone mentions that the story was hard to follow. I made the joke that I should re-edit the film into chronological order to make the story more coherent.
In November, Torrentfreak.com released an article about record breaking torrent files. On the list was the oldest torrent known to be still active: The.Matrix-ASCII.
I started to think about what it was that they were doing. Like my film, this film was a classic example of fair use. I have created a new work based on the work of Quentin Tarantino. Armed with the original DVD, mencoder converted the film to a xvid/ac3 high resolution encoding. Kdenlive preserved the 5.1 surround sound during editing and when I was done, I had another high resolution xvid/ac3. Using Avidemux, Kdenlive, The GIMP, Handbrake, and FFMPEG the film has been re-encoded to a Xvid for everyone to download.

Die Spoke-Art-Gallery in San Francisco veranstaltet im Juni bereits die zweite Tarantino vs Coen Brothers-Ausstellung: „A battle royale (with cheese) style art exhibit featuring over 100 artists representing their favorite Tarantino and Coen Brothers films, scenes, characters and themes in a variety of mediums including original paintings and affordable prints.“

Schöner Trailer für die Doku „Tarantino: The Disciple Of Hong Kong“. Hatte Rajko gestern bereits bei den Filmfreunden gebloggt, will ich aber auch hier haben. Läuft in ein paar Wochen im französischen Fernsehen, könnte bei uns also bald irgendwann bei Arte zu sehen sein. Von Twitch:
The influence Hong Kong cinema has had on Quentin Tarantino has never been a secret. Kill Bill made the director’s love affair explicit but observant fans had long since recognized the influence of Ringo Lam’s City On Fire on Tarantino’s Reservoir Dogs and there have been numerous other nods to films of the region in Tarantino’s work. And now a French directorial duo who refer to themselves simply as Jac & Johan are tackling Tarantino’s relationship with the region head on with a produced-for-French-TV documentary titled simply Tarantino: The Disciple Of Hong Kong.
Occasional Twitch contributor Frederic Ambroisine worked as an associate producer on this, helping the directors line up and impressive array of interviews on the subject, talking to stars like Simon Yam and Gordon Liu, scholars such as David Bordwell, Hong Kong International Film Festival director Roger Garcia and – in a major coup – City On Fire director Ringo Lam himself, with Lam giving his first on camera interview in ten years for the film.
