Das ist doch mal was: Ein englischer Reporter hatte am Tiananmen Square einen Standard-Job zu erledigen und wagte es, das Wort „1989“ zu sagen. Prompt wurden er und sein Kameramann abgeführt und in einen anliegenden Park entführt. Was die Damen und Herren von der chinesischen Polizei nicht wussten: Die Kamera übertrug live.
He had been broadcasting from Tiananmen Square in Beijing, probably a routine story on the just-a-formality election of Xi Jinping as president of China, when he mentioned the 1989 protests. Police quickly ushered Stone and his crew into a van and, apparently sometime later (it’s sunny when he gets into the van, dark when he gets out), unloads them at what appears to be a park or school where they’re politely but insistently detained.
What’s amazing about this is that Stone is broadcasting live the entire time. At one point, he says right into the camera that he thinks this is only being allowed because the police believe they’re recording it all to tape. (If you saw a guy carrying a camera that was light enough for him to put on his shoulder but wasn’t plugged in to any obvious broadcast equipment, you’d probably think the same thing.)

Space Night goes Creative Commons
Ganz, ganz großartiger Erfolg: Der Bayerische Rundfunk wird die SpaceNight fortsetzen (nachdem man sie zunächst wegen erhöhter GEMA-Tarife absetzen wollte) und setzt dabei auf freie Musik unter CC-Lizenz. Das ist zunächst mal ein sehr schöner Sieg für die SpaceNight, gleichzeitig ein tolles Zeichen für Creative Commons-Lizenzen und obendrauf noch ein Schlag ins Gesicht der GEMA, die CC-Lizenzen prinzipiell ablehnt. Großartig! Danke an alle, die sich engagiert, gebloggt und geshared haben, insbesondere an die SpacenightCC-Facebookgruppe.
Der Bayerische Rundfunk (BR) hat sich dazu entschlossen, die bei den Fans sehr beliebte Kultsendung Space Night komplett mit unter Creative Commons-lizenzierter Musik (CC-Musik) zu produzieren. Damit ist über vier Wochen nach dem verkündeten Ende der Sendereihe nicht nur das Format gerettet, sondern auch ein von der Fangemeinde gewünschter Weg mit freien Inhalten gewählt worden. […]
In einem ersten Schritt werden jetzt einzelne ältere Folgen mit CC-Musik neu vertont. Ab Herbst könnten dann bereits neue Folgen von Anfang an mit CC-Musik produziert werden. Dafür bemüht der BR sich auch um Bilder aus dem Weltraum in HD-Qualität. In weiteren Schritten soll besonders auch die große Fan- und Aktivist_innengemeinde von der Space Night und CC-Musik kreativ in den Produktionsprozess eingebunden werden. Einzelheiten sind aber erst noch in der Planung.

Hihi, jemand hat sich ins Notfallsystem von Montanas TV-Sender KRTV gehackt und eine Zombie-Warnung übertragen: „Someone apparently hacked into the Emergency Alert System and announced on KRTV and the CW that there was an emergency in several Montana counties.“ Die Durchsage war sowas wie eine komprimierte Fassung des Texts des Radiosprechers in Night of the Living Dead (hier das Original):

Charlie Brookers Weekly Wipe S01E01
Charlie Brooker hat eine neue Wipe-Serie am Start, die erste regelmäßige seit 2010. YT-User sn0otchie (von dem ich vermute, dass es Brooker selbst ist, oder aber sein größter Fan, weil dort regelmäßig jedes und nur Brooker-Material landet) hat die erste Folge in zwei Teilen online gestellt. Sorta related: Black Mirror S02 startet am 11. Februar und dürfte in sn0otchies YT-Channel ebenfalls ziemlich zeitnah auftauchen.

GEMA killed Space Night
So ab dem letzten Drittel meiner Feier-Glanzzeiten (circa 94 bis 98) gab’s nach einer durchgeschwitzten Nacht nichts besseres, als nach Hause zu kommen und verpeilt die Space Night auf BR3 zu schauen. Dürfte wahrscheinlich so ziemlich jedem so ergangen sein, mit Techno oder ohne und Harald Lesch verdankt seine Wissenschaftler-Popularität nicht zu einem geringen Teil zunächst einmal der Space Night.
Aber damit ist jetzt Schluß: Die GEMA hat die Space Night getötet. Ich betone es explizit nochmal an dieser Stelle: Die GEMA ist ein Kulturterrorist und hat nun auch noch eine Ikone des Nachtprogramms mit fast 20jähriger Geschichte auf dem Gewissen. Natürlich könnte der BR auf CC-Lizenzen umsteigen (wo die GEMA ja auch manchmal unter rechtlich mindestens anzuzweifelnden Bedingungen zulangt) und eine Vorher-Nachher-Kostenaufstellung würde mich auch interessieren, aber so steht es jetzt erstmal da: Die GEMA hat die Space Night getötet. Ihr Schweine!

Leider müssen wir Ihnen mitteilen, dass wir die Sendereihe “Space Night” nicht mehr im Programm von BR-Alpha führen. Grund hierfür ist, dass die GEMA eine Gebührenreform durchgeführt hat, sodass die Produktionskosten für “Space Night” für den Bayerischen Rundfunk erhöht wurden.
Daraufhin hat sich unsere Programmplanung entschieden, die Produktion der Sendereihe nicht mehr fortzusetzen.
Der BR stellt “Space Night” wegen GEMA ein

[update] Der BR arbeitet laut Metronaut an einem neuen Konzept für die Sendung, ob man dabei auch CC-Lizenzen in Betracht zieht, haben sie leider nicht beantwortet:

Hintergrund sind die laufenden Verhandlungen zur Neugestaltung der GEMA-Beiträge mit der ARD. Fest steht, dass sich bei einer Fortführung der musikuntermalten “Space Night” die Kosten für die Ausstrahlung nach jetzigem Stand deutlich erhöhen würden. Jährlich ist von einem niedrigen siebenstelligen Betrag nur für die Musikrechte auszugehen. Diese Mehrkosten wären zu Lasten anderer Programmformate gegangen.

Eine SetTop-Box, die Torrents runterladen kann und während des Downloads Filme streamt, sowohl standalone als auch über WLan/Rechner/Handy. Kostet nur 90 Euro und ist sowas von bestellt, das Teil ist wie für mich gemacht. Ich frage mich grade, ob man die Funktionalität auch auf der OUYA-Konsole hinbekommt oder auf der kommenden Steam-Box von Valve (ich bin übrigens ganz und gar nicht davon überzeugt, dass das Stückchen Xi3-Hardware, das man vor ein paar Tagen auf der CES sah, tatsächlich etwas mit der Valve-Konsole zu tun hat, sonst hätte ich da schon was zu gepostet), jedenfalls: BitTorrent Box, WANT!

Ganz großartige Fotoserie von Michael Jang, der in den 80ern Portraits von unter anderem Hendrix und Reagan machte und die Punk-Kultur in San Francisco fotografierte. Für „Summer Weather“ hat er nun 30 Jahre alte Bilder ausgekramt, die er damals während der Vorsprechen für den Job des Wettervorhersagers in ‘nem lokalen TV-Sender geschossen hatte.

Fantastische neue Möglichkeiten für Remixe und whatnot; „Let a thousand Jon Stewarts bloom.“ Natürlich nur amerikanische News. Bei uns? „Depublikation“. Von Deutschland als „Technologie-Entwicklungsland“ zu sprechen ist ja noch viel zu optimistisch, da sich dafür ja etwas entwickeln müsste.

Teletext Art Festival in der ARD
Die ARD zeigt vom 16. August bis 16. September eine internationale Teletext-Kunstausstellung, die Arbeiten sind auf Seite 770 und offline in der Galerie Pflüger68 zu sehen, ein paar Artworks gibt’s online auf der Seite der finnischen Teletext-Künstler FixC. Ich bin ja immer für mehr Kunst mit Retrotech-Kram und ollen Gadgets!
Teletext, first invented some 30 years ago, utilizes the “vertical blanking interval” lines that together form the dark band dividing pictures horizontally on the television screen. Technically it has remained almost unchanged until recently when TV became digital. Teletext being an amazing success story still attracts millions of visitors daily for the latest news headlines, weather reports or sports results.
The potential of Teletext as an tool for artistic expression has not yet been fully discovered though the aesthetics of Teletext have slowly creeped in to the most fashionable street ware, graffiti and fine art. Is the next big word in intellectual small talk of the hip, rich and famous going to be teletextualism? Time will show, but since it happens The International Teletext Art Festival gives the possibility to the ARD Text users to decide for themselves.

Sehr kuhles Teil, das der Hacker Kyle Evans da aus einem alten Röhren-TV und einigen Sensoren zusammengelötet hat. Das Ding reagiert auf die Bewegungen seines Trägers und wandelt diese in Sound um. Nicht wirklich komfortabel, aber irgendwie schön anzusehen, auch wenn diese Performance ganz sicher niemand über 90 Minuten lang durchhält.
The de/Rastra oscillographic synthesizer is a real-time audio/video instrument and computer-interfacing device that allows a performer to generate visualizations intrinsic tocathode ray tube technology while simultaneously creating the acoustic analog of the displayed imagery. By way of building, bending and mutilating, de/Rastra shows the effects of altering the anatomical makeup of a CRT television, revealing the intrinsically hidden potentials of the technology through the repurposing and restructuring of its own ability. Through hacking and exploiting the capabilities intrinsic to all CRT devices, the technology becomes repurposed as a performative interface, breaking down the device’s ‘consumption only’ nature. The performer is given control over the technology by removing it from the intended application and forcing it into an active state through a combination of physical and mental effort.
