Amanda Ghassaei hat vor ein paar Monaten Schallplatten auf einem 3D-Drucker ausgegeben, jetzt hat sie mit einem Lasercutter unter anderem Joy Divisions Love will tear us apart in Holz geritzt. Klingt natürlich eher suboptimal, aber so ‘ne Holzplatte macht sich sicherlich trotzdem schick im Regal. Und noch dazu gibt’s ein Instructable zum Selbermachen, inklusive PDFs der Sounddaten als Vektor-Datei, mit denen man sicher auch noch ganz anderen Unsinn anstellen kann.
These records were cut on an Epilog 120 Watt Legend EXT to a theoretical precision of 1200dpi (the kerf of the cut and some tricks I used to avoid crashing the laser cutter dropped the actual precision down by ~1/6). The audio on the records has a bit depth between 4-5 (typical mp3 audio is 16 bit) and a sampling rate up to about 4.5kHz (mp3 is 44.1kHz). So far I’ve successfully cut audio on wood, acrylic and paper, and I’m sure there are many more materials that would work. I wrote the Processing sketch that generates the record cutting paths so that it can be modified for any song, material, cutting machine, record size, and turntable speed […].
You should also note that in this Instructable I’ll demonstrate specifically how I used a laser cutter for this process, but the cutting files I’m using are standard vector graphics in a PDF format, so they can be extended to many other digital fabrication tools.

Jack White hat anlässlich des Record Store Days einen 1947er Voice-o-Graph restauriert und in seinem Third Man Record Store aufgestellt, mit dem Teil kann man 6″-Vinyls gegen Münzeinwurf aufnehmen.
On Saturday, April 20th, Jack White and Third Man Records will unveil their Third Man Recording Booth, a refurbished 1947 Voice-o-Graph machine that records up to 2 minutes of audio and dispenses a one-of-a-kind 6″ phonograph disc to the user. Gestern hat Mondotees den Drive Soundtrack auf Vinyl mit Tyler Stout-Artwork innerhalb einer halben Stunde ausverkauft und ich hab’s verpasst und schau mir jetzt noch ein bisschen diese Bilder an und weine leise in mich hinein. Auf Ebay geht das Teil in pinkem Vinyl jetzt schon für mindestens 100$ über’n Tisch. Narf.

Die Anzeige für den Sharp VZ3000 habe ich vorhin auf meinem Facebook gepostet, die 2500er-Variante gibt’s auf Ebay, nur leicht defekt und einfach zu reparieren und ich denke, ich werde da zuschlagen. I mean, look at this… LOOK AT THIS! Das hier ist die 2000er Serie:
Rave Wars in colored Vinyl and vintage Star Wars-Actionfigure-Packaging
Vor rund einem Jahr bloggte ich über zwei 7″-Vinyls – Rave Wars I und Rave Wars II – in Star Wars-Actionfigure-Packaging. Die haben sie heute in einer Nachpressung von je 100 Stück neu aufgelegt, letzte Chance: „These are the last ever available copies, as the metalwork has now been recycled. There will be NO FURTHER REPRESSES EVER.“ Und die Dinger waren natürlich innerhalb von ein paar Minuten ausverkauft… aber diesmal war ich schnell genug und hab’ mir beide geordert, yay! Und jetzt drückt mir die Daumen, ich will Akbar und nen Stormtrooper!

Drive Soundtrack on Vinyl
Ich komm’ derzeit wieder so ein bisschen auf den Vinyl-Trip, letzte Woche hab’ ich mir Mondos Poltergeist-Vinyl bestellt und am 22. März bringen sie den Drive-Soundtrack auf Platte mit schickem Cover von Tyler Stout und (teilweise) in pinkem Vinyl. Da werde ich wohl zuschlagen müssen.
The LP will be available in person at Austin’s Mondo Gallery on March 15; it’ll be for sale through their website on March 22. It’s a 2xLP set with gatefold sleeve on black vinyl– although random copies will be on hot pink vinyl.
The soundtrack features a score by Cliff Martinez, plus tracks by Chromatics, College, Kavinsky and Lovefoxxx, and others.

Poltergeist Soundtrack on Vinyl
Grade bestellt: Mondos remasterten Poltergeist-Soundtrack auf Vinyl.
Ich liebe Poltergeist, halte ihn für einen nahezu perfekten Film und wenn ich auf eine einsame Insel ziehen müsste und nur einen Flick mitnehmen dürfte, es wäre Poltergeist. Der Door Ghost ist das vielleicht grandioseste Creature Design aller Zeiten, der Erzählrhythmus und die Effekte sind auch 30 Jahre danach nicht spürbar gealtert und „Dieses Haus ist gereinigt“ ist einer der besten Oneliner überhaupt.
Der Soundtrack kommt als Doppelalbum, viele der Tracks erscheinen zum ersten mal auf Platte, ein paar der Alben kommen in transparentem Vinyl, drückt mir die Daumen.

Fat Boys Pizzabox Edition
Die Fatboys haben im Herbst letzten Jahres ihr Debut remastert und neu aufgelegt, äußerst passend als Pizza-Vinyl in einer Pizza-Box.
Once a sensation of 1980s culture The Fat Boys were early ambassadors of rap music. Buff Love’s beatbox set the tone for their hard beats and hilarious lyrics. Their subject matter ran that gamut from over-eating to comic book characters and girls. With their innate sense of humor they rightfully earned the title The Clown Princes of Rap. It’s awesome to see The Fat Boys career given its proper due with this more than appropriate pizza box reissue. 33⅓Hz on Vinyl
Nette Arbeit von Carl Schilde, der exakt 33⅓ Hz auf Vinyl gepresst hat, die Umdrehungen des Plattenspielers entsprechen so genau der Tonhöhe. Ich halte zwar viel von dem dort geschriebenen „Feel the air move around“ für Blödsinn, mag’s aber trotzdem.
WOW is a vinyl record containing a single ultra-low frequency which will alter slightly depending on the mechanical components of your record player. Use more than one system to play several records simultaneously and the air around you will start pulsating. Play 33 ⅓ Hz on 33 ⅓ rpm or 45 Hz on 45 rpm. Feel free to use the pitch wheel or even touch the record to control the sub-sonic wave field. Your choice of record players, the number of records and the character of your room create your individual listening experience.
Both sides of WOW contain just a single sine tone, the most simple sound there is. Its frequency is directly proportional to the rotation speed of the record player. This means on a standard setting of 33 ⅓ rounds per minute (rpm) you’ll hear an extremely low tone of 33 ⅓ cycles per second (Hz). Play it at 45 rpm and you’ll hear a slightly higher bass tone of 45 Hz. These frequencies are very close to the lower limit of human hearing and will be more felt than heard. This sensation can be irritating for some, pleasant for others. Move around and you will experience your room’s reaction to the sound – some spaces will be shaking, others may be still.

Cut Chemist zeigt 12 Minuten lang seine Plattensammlung. Mein Lieblingsmusikvideo von Cut Chemist ist übrigens nach wie vor der vier Jahre alte Clip zu „1st Big Break“, war damals das erste 360°-Panorama-Musikvideo mit Feuerschluckern und Robotern auf ‘nem Dach und sowas. Nach dem Klick.

Im Ernst: Wer schmilzt denn bitte seine Jonzun Crew LP von 1983 in der White Vinyl-Edition – die reguläre schwarze Vinyl steht bei mir im Regal – einen Totenschädel? Die Platte geht auf Ebay immerhin für 50 Dollar über den Tisch! Für sowas nimmt man Platten von… keine Ahnung… André Rieu, oder sowas… aber doch keine Tommy Boys oder Jonzun Crews… Hipster-Banausen vs Breakdance Classics!

Death Waltz ist ein neues Plattenlabel von Spencer Hickman (Rough Trade) und die legen Soundtracks neu auf, und zwar als Vinyl-Releases und limitierten Releases in colored Vinyl mit exklusiven Artworks bekannter Designer. Wie Mondo Tees für Soundtracks, quasi. Snake Plissken in bunt ist natürlich schon lange ausverkauft, demnächst kommt aber der Soundtrack von Carpenters Prince of Darkness oder auch Ti Wests House of the Devil mit Artwork von Tom „The Dude Designs“ Hodge. Großartiges Konzept, stilsichere Auswahl. Toll!

Lucas Abelas Art of Noise: The Vinyl Rally
Lucas Abela macht Noise-Performances und seltsame Installationen und bringt den dazu nötigen Wahnsinn mit. Für seine Arbeit Justice Yeldham im Palais de Tokyo funktioniert er eine Glasscherbe per Kontaktmikro zu einem Blasinstrument um und schneidet sich dabei die Lippen auf. Fast schon knuffig dagegen ist seine Installation Mix Tape, während der die Bänder von Kassetten durch Helium-Ballons in die Luft abgespult wurden und dabei über Magnetköpfe gezogen wurden. Oder eben obige Vinyl Rally, für die er einen RC-Buggy mit Tonabnehmer über einen Parkour aus Platten steuert.
Classic first person video racing is simulated as remote control cars with styli attached, race across a track constructed from a mass of disused vinyl records. Transmitting sound (produced as the styli skim along the vinyl surface) and vision (from wireless spy cameras mountedto the front of each car) to reengineered old school racing consoles with immersive 50” flat screens. Here players navigate the course from the vehicles point of view, not only controlling the cars movements, but also the parameters of the resulting sounds they create via a series of unique audio effects mounted onto the dashboard (by Last Gasp Laboratories) giving each car its own distinct aural flavour.
