Kunst-Favela auf der Art Basel von Riot-Cops gestürmt
Auf der Art Basel haben sie zum Amüsemeng des Kunst-Establishments ein „Favela-Café“ aufgebaut – Favelas sind die Slums in Brasilien –, in dem sich Sammler und der Kunstbetrieb im scheinbar authentischen Armuts-Chique ihren Latte hinter die Binde kippen können. Schlimm genug. Dann kamen ein paar tatsächliche Künstler daher, haben auf dem Messplatz eine „echte“ Favela nachgebaut:
Neben den schicken Hüttchen mit bequemen Sitzgelegenheiten für all die erschöpften Sammler- und Galeristenhintern stehen seit Freitagnachmittag nun original-versiffte Bretterverschläge. Es stinkt nach Rauch, eine Band schrammelt auf Gitarren, am Boden liegen leere Schrothülsen neben strassenkreidemalenden Kindern. Auf einer improvisierten Kochstelle bereitet jemand Linseneintopf, rechts davon brutzeln Würste auf dem Grill. Zwischen all den Kunstverständigen und Prekariatsbegeisterten mit Bierdosen steht ein Esel.
Schicke Aktion. Dann kamen die Riot Cops (Video oben) und haben die „Favela“ geräumt mit Schlagstöcken und Tränengas, die Räumung und die Polizeigewalt war selbstverständlich kein Bestandteil der Kunst-Aktion.
Mal von der unangenehmen Episode der Arschloch-Cops und dem Schaden, der dadurch entstanden ist, abgesehen: Für mich ist die nachgebaute Favela in ihrer Kritik am Kunstbetrieb inklusive der Räumung durch die Cops das wahrscheinlich spannendste und „echteste“ Kunstwerk, dass auf der Art Basel zu sehen war, wenn auch unbeabsichtigt. Protest-Kultur inklusive Blut und blaue Flecken als Kunstwerk. Klingt ein bisschen zynisch, ist aber nicht so sondern ehrlich gemeint. Hab’ ich allerdingt noch nicht durchdacht, finde ich jetzt aber mal spontan ziemlich spannend – New School Streetart, oder sowas.
Punkt 22 Uhr hat es auf dem Messeplatz geknallt. Die Polizei marschierte in voller Montur und mit Tränengasgewehren im Anschlag auf die feiernde Menge zu. Zielstrebig steuerten die Polizisten das DJ-Pult an, die Musik hörte schlagartig auf. Dann flogen die ersten Gegenstände gegen die Polizei, zurück kam Gummischrot. Wer nicht spurte, wurde grosszügig mit Pfefferspray eingenebelt; was an Mobiliar im Weg stand, gründlich zerdeppert.
Der Spuk dauerte nur wenige Minuten, dann zogen die Polizisten wieder ab und verschwanden in einer der Messehallen.
Blockupy Demo gegen Polizeigewalt am Samstag

Mitglieder der Occupy-Bewegung haben für den kommenden Samstag einen Protestzug durch die Innenstadt angekündigt, um gegen das Vorgehen der Ordnungsbehörde zu demonstrieren. Der Beginn ist für 12 Uhr am Baseler Platz geplant. Von dort aus wollen die Demonstranten die Route entlanggehen, die am Samstag geplant war vorbei an der Europäischen Zentralbank.
Ob die Demo am kommenden Samstag tatsächlich stattfindet war für mich nicht ganz ersichtlich. Im Fall des Falles werden sich nach dem gelesenen/miterlebten wohl viele Frankfurt angesprochen fühlen.“
Der Blockupy Frankfurt Kessel
Ich habe mich nach dem Kongress-Wochenende vor allem zunächst mit den Protesten in Istanbul beschäftigt, die Blockupy-Demo ging dabei ein bisschen unter. Jetzt hat mir Jan einen Haufen Links geschickt, einer erschreckender als der andere:
Nachdem im letzten Jahr die Blockupy-Proteste rund um die EZB komplett verboten werden sollten, wurde ein großer Teil der Verbote in letzter Minute und teils erst im Nachhinein gerichtlich einkassiert. Dieses Jahr gab sich die Stadt deutlich liberaler, auf der Demo selbst ist es aber heftig zugegangen:
Demosanitäter wurden an der Arbeit behindert, Journalisten der „linksradikalen“ FAZ werden von Polizisten belästigt und klagen darüber auf der Pressekonferenz des Innenministers, der Ermittlungsausschuss der Demo hat einen Haufen schockierender Berichte und Pressezitate. Daniel hat weitere Links dazu gesammelt.
Timo Reuter in der TAZ hält diese Inszenierung für gewollt, um in der Öffentlichkeit wieder das Schreckbild gewalttätiger Demonstrierender aufzubauen, dass bei den superfriedlichen Blockupy Protesten 2012 doch arg angekratzt wurde.
Ein ziemlich erhellender Augenzeugenbericht eines Demosanitäters macht grade auf Facebook die Runde:
Die meisten wurden durch Pfefferspray- (durchnässt) verletzt. Weiter hatten viele Kopfverletzungen -z.t. schwere- die durch gezielte Schläge auf Kopf und in das Gesicht verursacht wurden. Diverse Demonstrant_innen mussten zur Behandlung von Rettungswagen und Notärzt_innen abgeholt werden. Die Polizei überrannte im Verlauf unseren Behandlungsplatz (eindeutig abgesperrt und abgesprochen) vor dem jüdischen Museum und wir mussten die Verletzten weiter evakuieren.
Trotz Absprachen mit dem ärztlichen Leiter Rettungsdienst, dem Branddirektor der Feuerwehr und der Gesundheitsdezernentin der Stadt FFM wurde uns ab 19:09 Uhr der Zugang zu den Verletzten im Bereich Neue-Mainzer Str.-Friedensstr.-Kaiserplatz (“Sicherheitsbereich”) verwehrt. Der ärztliche Leiter Rettungsdienst wurde von der Polizei zeitweilig auf der anderen Mainseite festgehalten.
Dieser Befehl kam nicht von der Stadt sondern direkt aus dem Innenministerium wie uns die Polizei mitteilte. Ebenso wurde der
Rettungsdienst, die Feuerwehr, Journalist_innen und Politiker_innen aus diesem Bereich verbannt (dort befand sich auch die einzige theoretisch offene Notapotheke die wir zwischenzeitlich benötigten). Im Zuge dessen wurde zu allem Überfluss noch ein Team von uns durch die Bundespolizei angegriffen.
The Act Of Killing (Review)
Ich hab’ mir gestern die Doku The Act Of Killing angesehen, der Film von Joshua Oppenheimer (produziert von Werner Herzog und Errol Morris) handelt von den Massenmorden auf Indonesien in den 60ern, während denen 500.000 Menschen umkamen und die kommunistische Partei ausgelöscht wurde, während Suharto die Macht übernahm.
Zu der Zeit wurden die Gangster Anwar Congo und Adi Zulkadry zu den Anführern der Todeskommandos ernannt, Anwar spricht im Film von über 1000 Morden, die er selbst durchgeführt haben will und nicht ohne Stolz präsentiert er seine Methode des Tötens: Die meisten seiner Opfer strangulierte er mit einem langen Draht, bis der Mensch erwürgt war oder der Kopf ab. Den langen Draht benötigte man, damit nicht allzuviel Blut auf die Kleidung spritzte. Heute gilt Anwar als Gründer der rechten paramilitärischen Organisation Pemuda Pancasila und wird als Volksheld verehrt. Die Filmemacher überreden Anwar und Adi dazu, ihre Taten für einen aufwändig produzierten Film nachzustellen und was daraufhin folgt, ist an Surrealismus in einer Dokumentation wohl nicht zu überbieten.
Gangster in Drag, nachgestellte Enthauptungen im Fernsehstudio, durchsetzt mit Angebereien über vergangene Greueltaten. Und im Verlauf des Films öffnen sich die Mörder immer weiter und durch die Konfrontation mit ihren eigenen Taten setzt sich (zumindest bei Anwar, der im Film im Film einen der gefolterten Kommunisten spielt) langsam aber sicher die Erkenntnis durch: „Have I sinned?“
Der Doku wird an manchen Stellen vorgeworfen, manipulativ zu sein, die Taten nicht in den Kontext der Geschichte zu setzen und manche Szenen wirken tatsächlich gestellt, etwa wenn Anwar am Ende vor der Kamera kotzt. Allerdings behauptet der Film auch an keiner Stelle, die Historie der Massenmorde damals aufbereiten zu wollen. Vielmehr ist es eine Studie in die Abgründe des Menschen und sehr viel Näher an den Studien von Philip Zambardo (auf NC: Philip Zimbardo: Why ordinary people do evil… or do good, Wie gute Menschen böse werden…).
Der Film lief zur Berlinale auf einigen Festivals, gewann dort den Audience Award für die beste Doku 2013 und erhält grade einen limitierten Kino-Release in den USA und solltet Ihr die Gelegenheit haben, den Film irgendwo zu sehen: Unbedingt anschauen. Hier die Synopsis:
When Sukarno was overthrown by Suharto following the failed coup of the 30 September Movement in 1965, the gangsters Anwar Congo and Adi Zulkadry in Medan (North Sumatra) were promoted from selling black market movie theatre tickets to leaders of the most notorious death squad in North Sumatra, as part of the Indonesian killings of 1965–1966. They also extorted ethnic Chinese, killing those who refused to pay. Anwar personally killed approximately 1000 people, usually by strangling with wire.
Today, Anwar is revered as a founding father of the right-wing paramilitary organization Pemuda Pancasila that grew out of the death squads. The organization is so powerful that its leaders include government ministers, and they are happy to boast about everything from corruption and election rigging to genocide. A regime was founded on crimes against humanity, yet has never been held accountable.
Anwar and his friends are eager to re-enact the killings for the cameras, and are invited to make dramatic scenes depicting their memories of murder, as well as their feelings about the killings. These become more and more elaborate, and are produced in the style of their favorite film genres: gangster, western, and musical. Various aspects of that filmmaking process are shown, but gradually, beginning with the dramatization of Anwar’s own nightmares, the fiction scenes begin to take over the film: what began as a documentary gradually transforms into a fever dream — what Oppenheimer has called “a documentary of the imagination.”

Der Bassist der Irish-Rocker von den Dropkick Murphys prügelt einen Nazi beim Hitlergruß von der Bühne. Last week when the Dropkick Murphys played Termianl 5 for two nights, things were going according to plan. It was St Patty’s Day week, the shows were packed, and people were getting drunk. And rowdy. Really rowdy. As has become tradition the band invited the ladies to come onto the stage for their encore of “Kiss Me I’m Shitfaced” 50+ ladies made it past the barricade and onto the stage and danced the song away. The band then kicked into “Skinhead on the MBTA” and a ton of dudes were getting past security and the stage ended up being packed tighter than the underside of a real man’s kilt. As the band kicked into T.N.T. by AC/DC some moron started seig heiling (the nazi salute) in time to the beat.
Dropkicks singer / bassist Ken Casey noticed this and ran right over to the guy, smashed him in the face, took off his bass and hit him with that and then jumped on him and all out chaos ensued. We could only assume from our vantage point that said nazi got his ass kicked. About 30 seconds later Ken emerged from the pileup with his shirt torn and made his way back to the front of the stage. He strapped on his bass and said into the microphone “Nazis are NOT FUCKING WELCOME at a Dropkick Murphys show.”
A Screening of La Haine in London
The Other Cinema hat kurz nach dem 1. Mai und vor den Londoner Bürgermeister-Wahlen ein Screening von Mathieu Karrovitz “La Haine” (Hass) veranstaltet, parallel in London und Paris, rund ein Jahr nach den London Riots. Das riecht einerseits ein bisschen nach Monetarisierung von Rebellions-Chique (auch wenn die Screenings von Other Cinema gratis sind), aber andererseits denke ich, dass das Statement mit diesem Film in diesen Locations zu diesem Zeitpunkt nicht eindeutiger ausfallen können. Kudos.

As part of The Other Cinema network and tour, the production will travel from Broadwater Farm to The Troxy in Limehouse on 4th May, launch in outskirts of Paris, Saint-Ouen (free community screening) and conclude at Le Trianon in central Paris on 5th May where this production will close, the eve of the second round of the French presidential elections. Screenings are confirmed in 12 cities and towns in England and France from 2nd to 5th May, including Tallinn, Estonia.

Burning and looting is more than thieves stealing toasters. It’s the voice of the people that are at the lowest step of the ladder. It should be listened to with respect and intelligence and not simple accusations of ‘hoodlism’. I hope these screenings will help remember what we fight for. No justice. No peace.”

Joe Heaps hat ein Buch mit Polizeigewalt zum Ausmalen im Fanzine-Style veröffentlicht – handgebunden und fotokopiert – nachdem eine Freundin von ihm in Manhattan während der Occupy-Proteste Pfefferspray abbekommen hat. Großartig!
Forty-six artists, including Shepard Fairey, have contributed black-and-white artwork to the Police Brutality Coloring Book, a 48-page DIY publication inspired by incidents of violent police action against Occupy Wall Street activists.
“I wasn’t directly involved with the movement, but I had been down there a few times and was sympathetic to the cause,” said Police Brutality Coloring Book creator Joe “Heaps” Nelson in an interview with Wired.com. Then it turned out that Chelsea Elliott, one of four women pepper-sprayed during a Sep. 24 protest march in Manhattan, was a friend of a friend of the New York artist.
The incident, and others like it, spurred Nelson into action. “I am outraged at how the police are treating people,” he said, “and moral outrage is not my default setting. And then when I saw that guy at Cal Davis [University of California at Davis campus police Lt. John Pike] calmly spray those kids in the face, I knew I had to do something.” […] The result is a photocopied, saddle-stitched book, with artwork ranging from crude sketches to fine illustrative art — most of which is conducive to coloring, some of which isn’t. Nelson describes it as “basically a punk-rock ‘zine, like what I used to do in the ’80s.”

[update] Vodafone: Egypt forced us to send text messages: „A text message received Sunday by an Associated Press reporter in Egypt appealed to the country’s “honest and loyal men to confront the traitors and criminals and protect our people and honor.” Another urged Egyptians to attend a pro-Mubarak rally in Cairo on Wednesday. The first was marked as coming from “Vodafone.” The other was signed: “Egypt Lovers.”
In a statement, Vodafone Group PLC said that the messages had been drafted by Egyptian authorities and that it had no power to change them.“
