Heute wird Commander Chris Hadfield einen Webcast live ins Netz übertragen (hier auf Ustream), in dem er Captain Kirk über unendliche Weiten unterhalten wird. Um 16:30 Uhr (10:30 a.m. EST) geht’s los und ich hab’ oben mal die Ustream-Version eingebunden, das Video wird danach aber wahrscheinlich auch sehr schnell im Netz landen, ich halte Euch auf dem Laufenden.

Vor ein paar Tagen erst habe ich das neue „Album“ von William Shatner in der Luft zerfetzt, jetzt schiebt er einen Clip zu „Bohemian Rhapsody“ hinterher. As bad as it possibly can get, schlechter geht’s schon fast nicht. Der Clip ist scheiße, der Song ist scheiße, das ganze Album ist scheiße. Jeez. Star Wars musste ich schon wegen Altersdemenz von George Lucas in den Müll schmeißen, jetzt scheint das mit The Shat und Star Trek ebenfalls loszugehen. Aber ey ehrlich: Boah, wie schlecht ist das denn bitte?
William Shatner seeking Major Tom
In ein paar Tagen erscheint William Shatners Spoken Word/Metal-Album „Seeking Major Tom“ und es ist selbstverständlich eine brillante Idee des Labels in Zeiten globaler Vernetzung, das Ding bei uns eine Woche nach dem Veröffentlichungs-Termin in den USA rauszubringen. Wie auch immer, das Album kann man sich ohnehin sparen denn es ist furchtbar.
Captain Kirk kann da auch gar nix für, er singt ja ohnehin nicht, sondern spricht die Songtexte über die Musik, was auf seinem letzten Album „Has Been“ ja auch wunderbar funktionierte, aber da arbeitete er auch mit Ben Folds zusammen und ein Musiker von dessen Kaliber fehlt bei Major Tom. Die Musik selbst ist grausam, unterirdisch, beinahe schon unhörbar und die Coverversionen eigentlich toller Nummern wie Thomas Dolbys „She blinded me with Science“ oder Queens „Bohemian Rhapsody“ werden billigst runtergenudelt, da rettet auch The Shat und sein Sprechsingsang nichts mehr. Sehr schade, vor allem wenn man bedenkt, dass an der Produktion unter anderem Sheryl Crow, Alan Parsons, Peter Frampton, Ritchie Blackmore und Bootsy Collins beteiligt waren. Und Michael Schenker von den Scorpions, was diese musikalische Vollkatastrophe dann doch etwas weniger überraschend erscheinen lässt.
Ohne Mist: Die Musik auf dem Album klingt komplett wie Cover-Versionen von schlechten Hochzeits-Musikern. Alleinunterhalter-Ästhetik, oder so ähnlich. Jedenfalls: Dieses Posting ist als Warnung gedacht. Selbstverständlich kann man sich das Ding als Kuriosum ins Regal stellen und Komplettsammler müssen sowieso zuschlagen, aber man sollte keine gute Musik erwarten, die gibt’s auf dem Album nicht. Auf einer Skala von 0 bis 10 Punkten verdient das hier maximal einen – für The Shat. Extrem schade, brillante Idee, grandios verschenkt.

It’s a recording of an appearance at some kind of a Star Trek convention just before the first Star Trek movie came out (probably the lowest point in Shatner’s career). Half of it consists of Shatner answering questions from the audience (where was the bathroom on the Enterprise?) and recalling inane stories from his career. On the other half, he performs dramatic poetry interpretations, including “Earthbound”, “The Flight of Man” and a reading from H.G. Wells’ “War of the Worlds”.
On the artwork for Transformed Man, Shatner appeared as Captain Kirk, in his full starfleet uniform. Here, however, licensing restrictions prevented Imperial House records from using any actual Trek material. Notice how Shatner is the captain of the “Starship”, not the “Enterprise”, and how his shirt, while similar to the one he wore on TV, lacks the official Star Trek insignia. If you look closely you might also notice that the space rifle he’s wielding is actually an upside-down camera tripod — talk about your low-budget photo shoots!

Vorgestern ging ein Video mit William „Captain Kirk“ Shatner durch die Blogs, in dem dieser Sarah Palins etwas, hm, entrückte Abschiedsrede als Gedicht vorlas. Das Video hatte ich „nur“ in den Links, weil Sarah Palin als abgetretene Gouverneurin von Alaska jetzt nicht sooo interessant ist, auch wenn Shatner ihre Abschiedsrede als Gedicht vorliest.
