Ren & Stimpy made from Wood

Hab’ aber keine 2000 Dollar: Untitled by Amanda Visell.
Laser-Cut Records made from Wood

These records were cut on an Epilog 120 Watt Legend EXT to a theoretical precision of 1200dpi (the kerf of the cut and some tricks I used to avoid crashing the laser cutter dropped the actual precision down by ~1/6). The audio on the records has a bit depth between 4-5 (typical mp3 audio is 16 bit) and a sampling rate up to about 4.5kHz (mp3 is 44.1kHz). So far I’ve successfully cut audio on wood, acrylic and paper, and I’m sure there are many more materials that would work. I wrote the Processing sketch that generates the record cutting paths so that it can be modified for any song, material, cutting machine, record size, and turntable speed […].
You should also note that in this Instructable I’ll demonstrate specifically how I used a laser cutter for this process, but the cutting files I’m using are standard vector graphics in a PDF format, so they can be extended to many other digital fabrication tools.

Charles Ponstingl, the Man who carved the Comics

Awesome!
To understand Charles’ interest in Comic Characters, one need only look back to his childhood. All the Funny Folks, and the Great Artists who created them, speak to him of simpler times and better days, echoing an era when America was still fresh and brave. They carry him back to his earliest days, a time when good and evil were still easily discernible, and almost everyone, as well as the Comic Characters that Charles met in the “Funny Papers”, were all on the same page.
Ron carried the carvings into my house, one at a time. Each one was contained in its own carefully constructed carrying case. As I lifted the lid of one box after another to feast my eyes on the treasures that hid inside, I thought, how strange this whole adventure seemed. These mysterious carvings; how did they come to be? The work of this reportedly unpleasant old man was clearly talking to me, and telling me a story that didn’t quite add up. Could this curiously friendly and so lovingly crafted body of work really be the product of a difficult and cantankerous old man? And why was it “he would never carve again”?

Lasercut Underwater-Topographic Maps made from Wood

Sehr tolle Topografie-Karten von Below The Boat, lasergeschnitzt in übereinandergelegte Holzschichten. Oben die Great Lakes („I love the lakes. Just something very special here. The Great Lakes but also all the little inland lakes that dot the parts of Michigan. I love cars.“ SCNR.)
Starting with a bathymetric chart (the underwater equivalent of a topographic map), the contours are laser-cut into sheets of Baltic birch and glued together to create a powerful visual depth. Select layers are hand-colored blue so it’s easy to discern land from water, major byways are etched into the land, the whole thing’s framed in a custom, solid-wood frame and protected seamlessly with a sheet of durable, ultra-transparent Plexiglas.
The result is stunning. It lifts the surface of the water back like a veil, exposing the often-overlooked, under-explored, awe-inspiring world that lies below. To those familiar with the floor of the ocean or the bed of a lake, it’s a beautiful reminder of the deep channels, sharp drop-offs, and mountainous landscapes that are hidden from normal view. To the uninitiated, it’s wonderfully eye-opening; as though the world suddenly took on a fourth dimension.

Awesome Log of Wood-Cake

Muppets made from Wood

Elaborate Shithole made from Wood

Say hello to “The Kamper Krapper”. The perfect sanitary seat cover that belongs to you and you alone. A well designed solid wooden toilet seat that fits on any public toilet. Simply set it on the toilet seat and sit with your own personal seat cover. Clean and it only belongs to you. Perfect for camping, or anywhere you go that you don’t want to use those nasty public toilets seats.
Light weight and easy to carry from place to place. Beautiful carved wood that you can carry in public and you will be the only person to know that this seat looks like you are carrying a fine piece of wood carved furniture. No one will know it’s a toilet seat cover.

Colosse – Shortfilm with a living, wooden Robot-Puppet
Vimeo Direktcoloss, via Motionographer
Toller Kurzfilm von Yves Geleyn mit ‘ner lebendigen Holz-Roboter-Marionette: “Meet Colosse, Yves Geleyn’s sweet 30-foot child. Now, Colosse isn’t your ordinary child…he just so happens to be a very tall, wood robot puppet who doesn’t know his own strength, much less what his strings are up to.”
In this short film, Yves explores his child obsession with puppets and all things robotic. Thoughts from the director:
“I’m a huge fan of Jim Henson’s work. I have always wanted to work with puppets but never had the chance to do so before. I’m also a huge fan of robots; they were in all my childhood movies, cartoons, and comics. The robot from Paul Grimault’s The King And The Mockingbird; Brad Bird’s Iron Giant; and Goldorak, a Japanese cartoon, were inspirations for me. It was these two passions of puppetry and robots that drove me to create this short film, with a bird in it of course (can’t lose my bad habits).”
Wooden Bikes from Urban Trees
Schönes Videoportrait über Bill Holloway und Mauro Hernandez’ Masterworks Woodworking aus San Jose, Kaliforniern, die aus Bäume ihrer Stadt, die gefällt werden müssen, Fahrräder bauen. Von Vimeo: „Bill Holloway and Mauro Hernandez of Masterworks Woodworking in San Jose, CA, salvage condemned city trees, then build beautiful bicycles out of them. The story of these bikes goes from the felling of a family’s guardian tree, through the woodworking process, and finally, the completion of art you can ride.“

Animated Movie on Laserengraved Woodblocks
The film I want to create is called “The New America” and is set in a fictitious place and time where a very advanced society goes through a phase of structural and financial collapse, but eventually re-emerges with it’s values rooted in a strong relationship with nature.
One of the most exciting parts of this film is that every frame would actually be engraved on wood and that each person participating would get to keep one of these one-of-a-kind artworks.

Dead Wood from Newspapers made into a Lamp

Every day, piles of newspapers are discarded and recycled into new paper. Mieke Meijer has devised a solution to use this surplus of paper into a renewed material. When a NewspaperWood log is cut, the layers of paper appear like lines of a wood grain or the rings of a tree and therefore resembles the aesthetic of real wood. The material can be cut, milled and sanded and generally treated like any other type of wood.
In april 2011 the first prototypes have been presented in Milan of which a selection will be included in the Vij5 collection.

Wooden Skateboards from Mumbai

Tolle geschnitzte Holz-Skateboards aus Mumbai: „Combine a worldwide sports craze with Mumbai’s traditional craftsmanship, and the result is an uncommonly interesting series of objects.
